I have held off making a thread like this on many occassions, so thanks for starting this one.
I would hate to be a Palestinian living in my 'homeland' right now. Every single fucking day - turn on the news - 5 palestinian dead 50 wounded/10 palestinian dead - 7 of the 10 year old stone throwers 130 wounded/dozens of houses demolished 1000 left homeless. WHAT THE FUCK????
jethrek said:A decision by the US administration to withdraw support from Israel during this could not be made at Colin Powell's level. Such a rogue move by a member of the administration would cause havoc. Equating Colin Powell to a puppet though is questionable, fund raising is something all politicians do, and the man has more integrity thant he whole rest of this administration (not that that says much).
I doubt Bush has the strength of character to try to step in, and in reality given the US's (and especially this administration's) long history of supporting Israel it would be awkward. Furthermore, we're stretched thin in the disastrous situation we created in Iraq.
I fear the UN may be forced to involve itself in this, and that would get very messy.
QUOTE]
As the US blindly backs Israel no matter what, the UN effectively has no power, as the US is a permanent member of the security council. I think the debacle over going to war with Iraq showed what influence the UN has over the US. The hypocritical US policy towards Israel completely undermines the rest of their foreign policy (Iraq, "war on terror" etc etc), yet it seems fundamental to all the recent US administrations (Bush, Clinton, Bush).

jethrek said:Tally the fucking death and starvation count. Israel has killed more Palestinians than vice versa since day one, and in a much mroe organized way than suicide bombers.
galfordo said:Also, I'm not really sure how organized killings are any worse than unorganized ones ....

"The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Israel's killing of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
The 14-0 vote came after at least 10 Palestinians were killed and 60 wounded when Israeli troops opened fire on protesters in the town of Rafah.
The resolution also urged Israel to stop the demolition of Palestinian homes in the area.
The US, which usually vetoes anti-Israeli resolutions, abstained.
In a further rebuke, the White House issued a statement criticising Israel's actions in Gaza in recent days. "
I mean, it's as much power as the UN has ever really had. The US has weakly abstained under the idiotic notion that the resolution should be addressing terror (a mantra that has grown mroe than thin)
