HI,

I've got a Mslug 3 MVS cart which has worked nicely until i've had a strange problem with it...
The game has been tested on 3 different mvs slot ( 1 slot and 2 slots )and show the same problem : sprites are garbage and there's no more sound !!! ( I've cleaned cart contacts with some alcohol but nothing change .... :Same problem : garbage , garbage ...only "highscore " , and "credit " are visible .... .and after a few seconds the game hang up ...

IF someone has a idea ?? do you think that the cart is dead ??

Hmm, THREE different MVS units, you've tried. Hell, I don't think there are three MVS units in my entire town outside of my one.

I say that it's either the unit or the cart. Not sure, sorry. This couldn't be a boot issue, could it?

this Metal slug III appears to be a legit cart ( it has a transparent case and true serial)....and it played fine ...until I've got this problem ...

Yes, I've tried it on 3 différent MVS board ( 1 slot mono and 2 MV2-F that I own ;-) ....and the same problem appears ....

Now, I think this cart is dead ...but I'd like to know why ? a MVS slot can fried a Cart ??

PPlease post a pic of the component side of both boards.
Sounds to me like you have a rip off boot or a real faulty cart, :(

An MVS board can most definitely 'fry' a cart...depending on the voltage adjustment in the cabinet. Trust me...I know. My game board took a surge and took out 3 of the 4 carts that were in it including Metal Slug X, Bust-A-Move Again and Super Sidekicks 3. At the time, that was $400 down the tubes :(

Neomodus, thanks for sending the pics, the top board on your MS3 cart is completely different to the top board on mine (which I beleive is legit) the bottom CHAFI0 board is exactly same, although yours has an eprom for M1, which doesnt confirm anything.

Is this the difference between an encrypted and non encrypted version of this cart I wonder ???

Will post piccys of the two different MS3 cart boards tonight (unless someone can confirm that there are two versions, with the top PROG boards very different in appearance.

OK these are the different MS3 "top" PROG cart boards, is one a boot or is one an encrypted version, the other not?. Would like to clear this up before dealing with the issues that may be causing the sound problem.

the proglba is the encrypted version (1st run of MS3 carts)

the progbk1 is unencrypted version (2nd run of MS3 carts)

SNK used unencrypted prog boards on the 2nd run of MS3 carts to cut down the production costs.

both are legit

Try cleaning the carts contacts with very light sand paper..or (dry) Green Scotch Brite.

The alcohol may have not got the dirt off well enough..

When you put the boards back in the case are they loose/enough to wobble..
Are you able to move them at all when the boards are in the case?
(screwed tight)

If they are real tight, they may be warping.
If so you have to loosen up on the screws a bit just to see if the boards get loose.

Sometimes the cases push two hard on certain parts of the boards, bending it...
('I" usually find this happen in clear blue cased games.)

Make sure when you put it in the 2 slot mother boards it's by itself.

Try pulling the cart up a bit when it in the mother board..(cab off)/Don't push it all the way down..pull it up a tad.
It may be going to far in and not making good contact..

Last Resort...
Take the boards out of the case.remembering/checking how they would go in the mother board while in the case.
Take tghem out of the case and put them in the mother board.
This way you can try each game board at different hights/one pushed further in then the other etc.

Otherwise, the solderside may have a crack/break of solder near a chip(Dry joint)..Something over my head that ttooddddyy can explain better.

As soon as we see a pic of the game in action, it will help determine if it's a lost cause or not... If you don't know what else to try, you can always send the MS3 MVS cart to me and I will examine it for you and let you know if I can fix it. I offer free examinations, just as long as you cover return shipping.

Thanks for posting that. I've been trying to find out for a long time now how to determine if my slug3 was a first or second run without taking the mini marquee into account :buttrock:

These are the gfx problems neomodus has.
screen.jpg

If its not a continuity problem it may be a faulty rom in the cart.
Programming a set of gfx eproms from the encrypted mame rom dump may fix it- you mentioned sound probs also ? :spock:

"Otherwise, the solderside may have a crack/break of solder near a chip(Dry joint)..Something over my head that ttooddddyy can explain better."

The first thing I would do is check for poor solder connections (dry joints) around the two boards. If you could take a high res piccy of both boards and email them I may be able to ID a problem, youd probably be better off taking up Jeffs offer to inspect the boards to establish if it will be cost effective to repair.
I had a Blazing Star cart with similar problems the other day, turned out to be a corroded track (gone open circuit) I live by the sea and have problems with corrosion.

From the pic, it's something to look into. The GFX roms seem to be fine as the FIX layer gfx are in place, which are spread along the 8 C roms. So this tells me the C roms are most likely fine. It could be the CMC chip is partially shot.

If this is the case, I have a spare board that can be used.

neomodus - I saw an email from you last night but I never made it back to my PC to answer emails. I'll answer it tonight when I get home.

You should examine the board some more to make sure you're not missing anything, but yeah, if the C roms are a-ok, putting them onto a new board would probably do the trick if that CMC is shot. If the M1 is bad, which I would imagine everything would be screwed up then since it has something to do with the encryption tables, you can burn a new M1.
