Since I sold my XBOX awhile back to help buy me a MVS 2-Slot and will be buying a PS2 again {my 2nd one since it was originally released} for KILL ZONE, Shell Shock: NAM 1967, MGS III: Snake Eater and a few others I was also thinking about finally getting into some kind of ONLINE gaming setup, though I have no intention of rebuying an XBOX at this time. *My question is, is how BIG and committed is the PS2 ONLINE Community within itself? Other than SOCOM and SOCOM II, what kinds of "Military Based" war games are either available to play online in cooperation with others, or is slated to come out? Some of you with PS2 should be able to answer this question hopefully.

I bought a network adapter with RE: Outbreak...I used it once, got
a server error message when the servers first came up...haven't
touched it since.

On the other hand, I play the hell out of Halo and XIII on gamespy
tunnel and xbox live.

I'll probably end up tossing the Ps2 network adapter on the shelf
and it'll never get used again. As it stands right now, the PS2 sucks
ass as far as games I want to play online.

I bought an Xbox at launch and Xbox Live at its launch.

I bought a PS2 the summer after its launch and never wasted my money on the network adaptor. I have since decided to sell my PS2.

Yeah, it's a waste of 50 bucks...I would have sold it back, but with
the value dropping 90% once you open it and try to return it to GS,
I just decided to keep it.

So you got the official Sony one, right? I liked the idea of the third party ones that worked as well, because you could always use it in an extra computer when you're bored with the PS2 online games.

Merc, other than Socom I don't think you will find what you're looking for. The only other military shooters that you can play online with the PS2 that I know of are Rainbow Six 3 and Medal of Honor (the Pacific theater version). I think one of the Ghost Recon titles is also online.

Syphon Filter is online multiplayer compatible, but it only supports 4 players. There are some decent non-military online games, I am having a lot of fun with FFXI. RE Outbreak was ok, but it was hard to find good people to play with.

I think the PS2 online community could be a lot better, but it lacks integration and stability due to the lack of a centralized administration such as Xbox Live. Live really is the best service out there, and worth every penny.

I was suprised this week my buddy showed my some figures suggesting the Xbox was 750,000 compared to PS2's 1.5 million.

IU don't see how considering the ease of Live, but the mag said so.

I thought Xbox Live was 750,000 a few months ago. Like around Christmas.
I also heard Canada is one of the largest Xbox Live communities, but I could be wrong on both counts.

Yeah, official one...I hate it, it's like a 50 dollar paper weight - and
I had such high hopes for RE: Outbreak. :(

PS2 online is complete shit, unless you love Socom and are an EA Sports freak. And socom gets real boring real fast with all the cheaters.

Xbox online community blows.

Get ready for rednecks and unintelligible black guys huffing and puffing in your ear non-stop.

Yeah, online gaming in general has disillusioned me. There are so many rude people and internet tuff guys that I play with my headset off 90 percent of the time. The only time I use it anymore is if playing with a friend. As long as online gaming offers anonymity, I don't see things changing anytime soon.

Hmm... some interesting posts indeed. *Guess I might have to just buy another XBOX in the foreseeable future then. I was thinking the SONY loyal would've made the PS2 ONLINE Community just as big if not bigger than the XBOX? I'm mostly interested in participating in war games though, {without the cheating} but my speciality is within the "Scout/Sniper" role, thus if the respective game doesn't support the SNIPER with at least a few different models to customized rifles then I probably wouldn't want to do it at all, {the online gaming thing I mean}. I'm looking to join a group here and there, maybe even eventually be apart of some sort of clan where I can hone my V.R. Sniping skills. Everyone else fans out while I take care of them from afar.

...are there any games {Merc X99 looks to Ghost Dog} that support the "Sniper" minded player? You know with available/customizable Gullie Suits, and a terrain that's condusive for the Squad-to-Chalk sized units battling it out? All of my past experiences are with stuff like Quake II and other FPS' that are more about TCS and CQC experiences rather than tactical pinpoint sharpshooting within the unit. If not, then I'll just stick to my one player experience, I can hold my own in the TCS/CQC role... I just prefer to back up a team from afar, or have to outhink another sides' Snipers.

PS2 online has always sucked simply because Sony in the US doesnt give a fuck. I had Rainbow Six 3 for it, fun for a bit however I realized the game was pretty much trash on PS2, Ubisoft didnt put in the programming time needed to make it good on PS2. I tried Jungle Storm however and I enjoyed it, very cool game. Basically from the RBS3 experience I felt meh, might as well go back to LIVE with CS and not have to deal with lag or shitty looking gameplay, then again I am sick of LIVE so I could care less. Bottom line Merc, im hanging onto it for Killzone, I dont care what is said I will wait til its out, get it, go online, and then make my decision. There might be a few more online titles for PS2 that will come that may be decent and $39 for the adapter is not a big deal, there are no fees to setup for online etc.. also now supposedly SamSho5, and possibly KOF2k3 will be online for ps2 and according to Ben Herman they will try to make all their games from that point on, online for ps2 not just xbox.

Its also getting a Battlefield game and Call of Duty game but who knows how thats going to turn out on PS2. Gradius V will have online rankings and thats pretty dope imo.

Online gaming communities in general are getting very annoying so if you only want a few online games and have a ps2 already then go for it. Everything on xbox is online and so not necessary, everyone talks about it including people I know yet no one plays LIVE ever, interesting.

Great response NeoFight though do you know on the specifics of the online games {nameley SOCOM and SOCOM II} the Vietnam games and stuff in that vein readily support the Scout/Sniper player... or are these kinds of games still more about RGS Tactical Combat Shooting/Close Quarter Combat missions expending millions of virtual rounds and lobbing grenades everywhere? I'm more interested in RECON/SCOUTING and finally "The Snipe: One, Shot, One Kill... move locations" for the respective unit I'm apart of. None of the games I've seen adverted be it for PS2 or XBOX ever seem to say much on this note. Everyone wants to be Rambo but not many are into the Enemy at the Gates "Private War within a War" style of playing. ---Heck I've beat 97% of Freedom Fighters on the hardest difficulty using only the SVD "Dragunov" Sniper Rifle and the Semi-Auto Pistol combonation to see the feasability of this type of playing in combat games and despite the fact the game wasn't centered around this, I managed to beat it anyhow. I'm looking for more of that personally than going shirtless and doing the "Spray & Pray" method.

...I'm buying a PS2 either way, but I might go over to XBOX live as I'll have Broadband soon enough when I move from an apartment into a house, but I'm not wasting my money to join an online gaming community that has Tactical Military V.R. games that don't have support for the type of soldiering that I have taken a bigger interest in as of late than simply Running and Gunning either. *Any help from you or anyone else for further elaboration would be great man.

Who plays with their headset anyway? Not me.

XBL rules, and with the whole slew of fighters coming out for it, it's only getting better folks.

Every online community has Rednecks and Huffer puffers.

XBL is simply a better system. PS2 online is unorganized and not as easy to hook up with friends.

Also if anyone is interested there is a group online for LIVE gamers.

Just E-Mail the admin with me as a referance.

I don't play with the headset for any games except those where it's absolutely necessary (RB6, etc.)
I love Live, though, and am definitely renewing it even if I don't use it constantly. I'm not on that much due to the move, but I use GoSpits like I do with pretty much everything else in life.
When I am online, look for me. I'll probably only be playing PGR2 anyway. :mr_t:

@ Merc 99x

I still play Ghost Recon Island Thunder, for some of the reasons you stated, how-ever, it is tough to find a large user base playing this game. When you get a good bunch of people playing, its simply amazing, you do occasionally run into the ass-hats that will shoot you in the back, or those people who don't realize that there are other people playing (The Rambo shmucks).

If you are selective about who you play with (buddy list), I think you would enjoy this game, if you have an Xbox.

Ghost Recon 2 should be comming out soon, hopefully they clean it up abit, and make it so it has to be more focused on team work.

There's honestly no comparison.

You buy XBL, $50 a year, one shot, no extras fees for anything (aside from PSO or content purchases). You get to play everything, there's always a lot of people to play on everything. Rainbow Six 3 sounds like the kind of thing you'd dig the shit out of Merc.

I myself am utterly addicted to RalliSport 2. Perhaps the best racing game I've ever played. So much speed, things to unlock, incredible physics, simple to get into yet very deep. Great, great gaming to be had.

Not to mention Street Fighter Anniversary pack later this year. :buttrock:

My take is this-

XBL is great. There are always people on. It's more of a 'real' thing, know what I mean. Crimson Skies alone was worth signing up on live.

But I have no problem with broadband on the PS2 either. I played Warhammer: Fire Warrior to death online. Granted there aren't that many people playing it because A) It's un unpopular game B) PS2 'online' community not as robust as XBL.

I thought RE:Outbreak was IMPOSSIBLE to get into and I sold it 2 weeks after purchase. Just a bad idea. Bad concept Capcom.

But I bought FFXI and have heard alot of people like it quite a bit on PS2- of course it's $50 for the adapter and $100 for the game/HDD, so it's not exactly an easy thing to commit to.

All new games should have SOME online element- even if it's just DL'able costumes or content or whatever.

Can any of you fuckers IMAGINE if Sega made a TRUE new Virtual On game with top notch online play??? Holy fuck that would be fucking amazing.
