I was playing this game today, and I usually play it with sound and music disabled from the command line. Well today on a hunch I tried it with just "nosfx" (just CD audio) and wow the AST is beautiful, and even better in the game.

Well from those of you who remember the other thread, my sound card is supposedly compatable with Soundblaster Pro. I tried installing the DOS drivers but I think I installed the wrong ones (IIRC it said SBPro 2), the computer crashes when a.) autodetecting the card b.) testing the card with a digital sound file or c.) starting the game with sound effects working. My card is a Crystal CS4281 card.

Also, I can not get any joystick support working. Are there drivers for a standard or 6-button joypad? I don't have any drivers for DOS for my USB pads (thrustmaster firestorm digital 2), MS Sidewinder (gameport) or the supplied and very generic 6-button pad. I managed to beat the game a few times (I can combo and do supers but it is VERY difficult).

Any help is appreciated. I use a celeron 600 with 64mb RAM, I run the game in actual MS-DOS (Restart in MS-DOS Mode), my OS is Windows 98 SE but it will never run the game in its MS-DOS prompt.

This game is awesome!

USB Joystick + DOS= Not a Chance In Hell. Sorry, you can't use USB devices (I believe there ARE USB mouse drivers for DOS) in pure DOS. If you were able to run the game in a Window within Windows 98, then you may be able to get it to work.

If you need the joystick, you will have to try to get one of the DOS emulators to work on your machine.

If my suggestions for loading SB Pro drivers for your sound card didn't work, I think you are S.O.L. on the sound part. If it's something you have to have, you can always find true sound blaster hardware going pretty cheap. Just look for ISA sound blaster or something.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

For the MS Sidewinder:

If you have the older Sidewinder with connection pins it should have come with a CD-Rom of drivers and included codecs for Virtua Fighter 2, etc.

If you have the newer, USB Sidewinder..my only advice would be to make sure that you have the latest DirectX 9 installed from Microsoft Update.

Still, wich such an old release as the SSF2T PC game..your best controller choice would have been the older pack-in (Assuming that you picked it up with the pack-in controller. I'm guessing you didn't.)

If you get too fed up with it, you can pick up the Capcom Classics Vol. 1 which includes Street Fighter and Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition.

Good luck, Adam.

Kern, I did try a few DOS emulators (DosBox was most successful) but they wouldn't even load the game.

BTW guys I found some DOS drivers for my sidewinder but have NO IDEA how to use them. http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade_downloads.shtml there are two different types on this page, I tried the second one but had no idea what to do with it.

Failing that a DOS-based joystick emulator would be good (I think there's even one on that page) but I have no idea how to do much of anything in DOS, much less multi-task.

As for buying a new old sound card, I'd much rather use existing hardware. Any way I can like emulate a SoundBlaster in DOS or something like that? But then again I think it's impossible to have a software-based thing like that. I'm just throwing ideas out, ya know.

The game still rocks hard, too bad there's no bonus stages.

You can probably pick up an old SB card for $20 shipped, if worse comes to worst.

As far as emulating an SB in DOS, there is no way that I know of.

Looking at the stuff on that page, it doesn't look like any of that will help you actually.

I think you are going to be stuck playing with just the music and no jpystick support. Both of those Sidewinder things look like they are for the serial sticks only.

You should try patching the game: One of the patches fixes some sound card related issues, and more importantly, it allows you to block while you are waking up (yes, you can sweep the enemy till ko).

I've had it patched to 1.5 for a while, are there further patches?
