First off, I absolutely hate:

H-A-T-E

the city of Los Angeles. If you're a resident there, you obviously have a much higher bullshit tolerance than I can ever hope to achieve because every moment outside of my hotel room and the convention center was pure hell. Jesus fucking Christ almighty does it feel fucking FANTASTIC to be back in Phoenix.

Anyway, here's a fairly terse rundown of this years show, I'll go into more depth after I eat.

Disappointments:

Halo 2- Open to print press only; ZERO floor presence, major fucking bummer MS/Bungie, MAJOR FUCKING BUMMER

Nintendo DS- I was allowed to play about 10 seconds of WarioWare in the "non-special" group of the show. That is to say, they picked 20 people out of 50 to go a different route (the DS was a special show/demo that you had to wait >1 hour for) who actually got to PLAY THE GAMES. The other 30 (me and Kid Aphex included) were treated with stupid tech demos and WarioWare. Big fucking deal. I got a lame ass t-shirt though. There was absoutely no reason for Nintendo to do this.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War- Looks like Ace Combat 4, only with higher res textures. Eh. Wingman option is cool but likely useless in the end since I'd rather take out the entire opposing force myself anyway.

Devil May Cry 3- I was under the impression this game was graphically different than the others. It isn't. In fact, Dante is now the most homosexual he's ever been (shirtless faggot) and the gameplay is basically the same from DMC 1 and 2. The intro to the game also fucking blows. Pizza? GET FUCKING REAL.

Sega's Lineup- So boring I didn't even visit their booth.

North Hall- Nintendo's booth reigned SUPREME over this end of E3. Sony's booth was a borefest aside from World Rally Cross 4 and Killzone.

Dead or Alive: Ultimate- Not playable.

Advance Wars: Under Fire- Taking this game out of turn-based was a major mistake. Every single person I witnessed playing the game seemed completely overwhelmed by the task at hand, which was seemingly set up to be a rather mundane tutorial styled mission. What was before a battle of resource managment and strategic unit placement and calculation has turned into a total fucking button mash-fest where bullets are flying at you from more directions than are physically possible.

Surprises:

KOF: Maximum Impact- This game EXCEEDED my paltry expectations of it by a country mile and farther. Clean graphics, high-detailed character models, SNK-styled levels and quick gameplay. Alternate costumes (ENTIRE costumes, not just color swaps, i.e.- Terry has both his MOTW and "trucker" outfits) for every single character, and and overall clean presentation to boot. This is a definite future purchase and worthy of the KOF series.

Resident Evil 4- Honestly, if you're still SOMEHOW on the fence after undoubtedly watching movies of this game from E3, you're a goddamn moron. Easily the scariest game I've ever witnessed, I was scared for my life even playing on the crowded and epileptic showfloor. Best graphics in a game, ever. PERIOD.

Tekken 5- Granted its impossible to tell anything from a movie; but the levels look fucking spectacular beyond anything, I seriously can't wait to see more of this game in action. The new characters seem a bit bland though.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat- Although I probably looked like a complete retarded slapping and clapping my hands on and around the pair of plastic drums used to control this game, its honestly the most intriguing game I've EVER seen. I wish I would've played it sooner (and consequently, more than once) than the third day of the show.

Odama- This game epitomizes "way out in leftfield". For starters it was hidden at the very back corner of Nintendo's booth facing away from the general flow of traffic around the area. At its core Odama is a pinball game. However, on top of simply pinball mechanics you are in the middle of a real-time strategy game. You shove your army's giant metal ball the "Odama" around the battle field via pinball paddles at the bottom of the screen much like any pinball game. However you use the ball to destroy the opposing force's encampment, convert their soldier's onto your side, and to gain health. The basic goal of the demo that was shown was to get your "ladder crew" across the river and enemy's camp to prop it up against the cliff where the enemy warlord sat. Once the ladder had been set, you could shoot the Odama up into his realm and deal him some damage directly, the only way to win the round.

Xyanide- This under advertised shmup by Playlogic was a total surprise in that it looks utterly gorgeous every second its turned on, but that its control scheme is so bizarre that I can't wait to finally figure it out once this game drops.

Dead or Alive: Ultimate- Despite its absence in demo form from Tecmo's booth, the movie they showed of it looked amazing. I can't believe the amount of stage interaction they're packing in this game (ex: Slamming an opponent into the legs of an elephant on the African savannah level causes the elephant to stand up and honk its trunk in irritation)

King of Fighters 2003 (PS2 port)- The 3-D backgrounds look phenomenal. I MIGHT even buy this just for them.

Basically what I expected:

Gradius V- Easily already one of the hardest shooters I've EVER come across. I can tell already it'll be near UNFATHOMABLE to beat this game without at least one option at all times. Can't wait can't wait can't wait.

Neo Contra- Fun fun fun fun fun. All fun, all the fucking time. Levels are definitely longer than in Shattered Soldier, so anyone who complained about that game being "nothing but boss fights" will be pleased that the run n' gun sections are far longer and far more populated in Neo Contra. The perspective changes about 3 times a stage, being that each stage is divided into 3 sections. Although I enjoyed Shattered Soldier to it's core, Neo Contra takes the formula in a new and just as fun direction.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater- I'm sure in the interim you've all seen the trailer already. If not, do so at your earliest conveinence. The game basically plays like MGS2 with some nifty improvements on graphics and animation. Although I didn't play it enough to find a battery, using (by today's standards) outdated equipment (sonar, motion detector, etc) that runs on batteries sounds like a pretty cool notion. It was hard to get a good impression on this game in the noisy convention hall.

Mortal Kombat: Deception- Basically Deadly Alliance with better graphics, more characters and multi-layered levels a'la DOA. Thats about all I have to say on this game.

Thats all I can remember at this very second, I'm sure I'll post more (plus nifty pics!)

my report:

1. No Halo 2 = E3 sucked major ass. Biggest disappointment of my life.

2. Gradius V was still probly the best game there.

3. Sony's booth was an utter borefest.

4. The DS was DiSsapointing; first you waited in line for an hour, then only a select few got chosen to play it. I got a DS shirt though; wow.

5. Didn't even look at the PSP [snooze]

6. Konami's booth was probly the second best in terms of solid titles. Neo Contra is amazing, and is now a LOT like a Psikyo shooter. Looked pretty hard, but I only played it once.

7. Gradius V is amazing; honestly, if only I could hear the music.

8. MGS3 looks amazing as well, and plays really well too. Graphics look really impressive to me, but the complicated control scheme made it kind of hard to just 'pick up and play'

9. Nintendo had some amazing games; most notably

10. Metroid Prime 2...whose multiplayer really wasn't that bad at all. And whose graphics looked ama-zing.

11. Geist, whose gameplay looks so fucking creative.

12. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which was definitely the most fun and innovative game of the show.

13. Resident Evil 4...which was game of the show, PERIOD.

14. Odama...a pinball game that takes place over a battlefield. Really, really impressive and fun as fuck.

15. Devil May Cry 3 is fucking gay as DashK. Seriously, its totally HOMO-ED out. Dante lost all his edge and is now a total pussy, who prefers EATING PIZZA TO KICKING ASS [as per the demo]. Game sucks.

16. No matter what anyone says, Los Angeles is the shittiest city ever. It's such a dirthole, it needs to be bombed and forgotten----period.

17. E3 = no free stuff. Just magazines. Sorry all you nerds for whom I promised lots of good.

18. World Rally Championship 4 owns.

19. MS' booth was the worst booth on the floor. Stupid ass games, stupid ass booth, no Halo 2....huge mistake after huge mistake.

20. Doom 3 is really amazing on the xbox...

21. The Fight Club game is amazing as a product...not so good as a game.

22. Tekken 5 looks AMAZING. CAN'T FUCKING WAIT FOR THAT SHIT!

Um, did you guys get pulled out of your car and anally raped by the LA Lakers or something? What on Earth happened to make you so utterly despise this city?

Other than MGS III: Snake Eater THE ABOVE PIC would have been the only reason for me to have gone to E3 had I been able to attend, as it's as close to a Kerberos Panzer Cops/JIN-ROH game I'm likely to ever see. *So what new coverage was shown or made playable at E3 on the upcomming "Supposedly HALO Killer of KILL ZONE???

...as for Los Angeles, yeah I've got to agree with you on that Buro. But then most places I've been to suck anyhow. Once the HYPE is gone, it's all B.S. *No place like Texas in my book, though I understand that Arizona is an "Open Carry" state, thus I might relocate their one day so I can walk around with my Single Action Revolver on my hip whenever and wherever I choose if that proves to be true.

Resident Evil 4 has got to be the best looking game on a console, ever. I have always loved the series, but even I had to admit it was getting stale, especially RE0. The changes in RE4 are sure to totally revitalize the series. I cannot stress how much I want to play this game.

Did either of you get a chance to play RE4, or was it even playabe to the general public?

Second to RE4 this E3 appears to be MGS3, which also looks totally amazing. I watched the newest trailer today, and it doesn't look like I'll be disappointed with this one. And, Ocelot is apparently in it too, which is pretty cool.

Oh, it was most DEFINITELY playable. Essentially the demo covered the beginning of the game (what I can guess to be the beginning) what starts with text informing you that Leon is to find the whereabouts of the Presidents daughter. Cut to a scene with Leon pulling up in a car with two uniformed officers. They come to a stop just outside house within this bizarre dead forest. As you approach the house, a cut scene plays that alludes to somebody or someTHING watching you from between wooden boards over a window in the house. Proceeding inside another cutscene plays between Leon and a man hunched over the fireplace. Leon introduces himself and inquires about the girl, to which the man responds shouting angrily in (I think, it was hard to hear) Spanish. Leon begins to walk away when the man grabs an axe and lunges at Leon. Dispatching of this man you find handgun ammo upstairs, and looking out the window you can see three more villagers waiting. At this point you can go back downstairs or dive out the window (basically every window/railing/ladder can be entered, exited, jumped over, pushed down or stood up), either way you have to fight the villagers who immediately swarm you.

Let me pause here by saying I've never been more scared or frantic in my life when confronted with 4+ enemies staring me straight in the face and at any moment ready to bite my face off or gut me like a fish.

Proceeding away from the house (the cops in the car have since ditched you) you follow a path, rendered beautifully in real-time 3D of a dead/decaying forest. Eventually you dispatch of some more enemies, investigate a shack with ammo and a stone inside and eventually come to a steel gate. Entering the gate puts you inside the village proper, wherein you can view the villagers from a distance, and as far as I could tell, would simply go about their village business for eternity until you decide to get closer, which is when suddenly they turn on you, barking and shouting. Basically at this point EVERYONE who stepped up to play completely lost their shit. Since suddenly you're facing 8-10 zombies swarming from various locations around the village. Run inside a house? They'll break the glass and climb ladders onto the second level to get you. Eventually you can find more ammo, a shotgun, grenades, health, and pesetas (don't know what they're for yet) but seemingly the demo never ended, especially with one of the villagers being the masked chainsaw psycho you've seen already. THIS MAN SIMPLY DID NOT DIE. He cut down doors, charged around corners, and basically does whatever it takes to box you in and get you. However it did lead to some very cool death's including Leon being decaptiated.

Game of the show, bar none, can't wait to play it again.

Anyone who doesn't like Los Angeles, or feels the downtown area is representitive of the whole city, no need to make yourselves uncomfortable. It's very simple -- don't come back. Either that, or meet up with some of the local members who can show you around the side of the city that is slightly less hellish next year. I don't think three days spent in a sweaty convention center qualifies you to judge, but I don't know what you did outside the show.

Can you tell me a little about new aiming system? Is it hard to line up shots? And will he auto aim, or is it all manual?

haha I find it sort of funny you guys are so affected by LA

Maybe my tolerance level must be high! Perhaps Baghdad should be my next stop. But then again I have a very low tolerance for cities without art theaters, hot deserts, suburban sprawl, WalMart, Endless parades of homogenous White people, The Mall of the America's, homely fat chicks, wiggas, boredom, lack of museums, lack of intricate architechtural landmarks, excessive use of adobe in buildings, people who call soda 'pop' and places I cannot take advantage of plentiful and cheap day laborers to help me move or clean my apartment.

I am surprised you guys can be so bored and just not explode. I mean games are great, but there's alot more things a city should offer a modern person than plentiful parking, convenience and quiet. Or dance clubs that play fucking nothing but hip hop or top 40. Live a little guys.

Then again, ANY place DashK rags on MUST be doing something right.

I don't plan to, they need to move E3 somewhere else.

The city is just a complete and utter victim of urban sprawl COMPLETELY out of control. Nothing about the way it's constructed makes the least bit of sense. Not to mention driving around it is like standing on the edge of a cliff with your eyes closed and your toes dangling over.

Well, I played the game only twice, and the aiming system was entirely manual, the only assistance came in the form of a laser sight.

However, after only two plays (total play time about 10-12 minutes), I was getting far more headshots (an instant kill resulting in the explosion of said enemy's head) on my second go round, so I'm sure with some more practice it won't be much of a problem. The real issue lies within the fact that you have to choose your targets wisely, and oftentimes enemies who were at the back of the pack suddenly charge forward, and you have to shift your aim quickly. Not to mention the fact that if enough room is available, the villagers will swarm your sides, forcing you to leave yourself vulnerable, but oftentimes a good kick (only available when they're close enough) will usually send a few of the enemies reeling or even off their feet completely.

It also didn't help when one of them ducked out of my shotgun's blast cone, resulting in the loss of a precious shell. These guys are definitely smart, and completely relentless.

That's the FUN part!

Seriously I understand what you're talking about (coming from Chicago, where parallel roads actually exist, LA looks like the city planner was a blind man with no arms who mapped it out in crayon on a piece of cardboard), but I've been here two years now and have never had a problem. Every road criss-crosses itself so much, you can always find familiar signs.

ANYWAYS, I've heard E3 sucked from multiple people now, most of whom said RE4 looked great, and nothing else playable was all too exciting. Too bad.

Wow, I cannot wait to play this game.

If this game does not sell well, it will be a true injustice.

I enjoyed it, but...I know better than to go to any convention for more than one day, and since I only had to drive 30 minutes or so to go to it, I didn't feel the need to go all three days to justify the trip. If I had gone all three days, I'd probably be in a bad mood, too. If I go next year though, I've got to get some kind of press pass; too much of the show was closed off to your normal, everyday, fake industry professionals.

You know, I just realized something. Another E3 gone by, and Nintendo still has no plans to bring the GBA Earthbound games to the U.S.

Seriously Nintendo, what the fuck? That announcement would have made your ownage of this years E3 complete.

Here I am talking about a Gameboy games, while everyone else is talking about hot women.

I wish I could go with a press pass, as well. I heard you get more goodies and, of course, the green light to more restricted areas. It sucks when you work for a magazine, though... I know a guy who works for one, and he had to go to conferences every hour or so to do coverage. Not much time to browse the floor.

And I heard that E3 in it's conception used to offer tons of goodies. With the rampant surges of dot.com writers and guys who faked their way in the con, the goodies became scarce. I'm not surprised that it even worse with free goodies this year, although it seems they are being a little more strict on letting people in nowadays.

Didn't go this year, which broke my consecutive trips to E3 at 5 or 6... but I'm banking on next year being the year to go. Hopefully we'll see more of PS3, XBox Next and the new Nintendo machine then.

Basically what you stated is the reason E3 probably doesn't give goodies away anymore. Which is really stupid because I got in both years legitimately, and its people who fake their way in that ruin it. But really, some kind of small low-cost trinket is better than magazines out my ass.

maybe not considered a big deal, but I have been waiting for months for Nintendo to be showing the peripherals which would enhance gameplay for the Gamecube. They have said they'd be showing it on various ocassions but nothing has been revealed... And Sega should die.

Well, that Donkey Kong drum is by no means new...but it sure as hell is fun.
And DK Jungle Beat IS new.
