First off, I absolutely hate:
H-A-T-E
the city of Los Angeles. If you're a resident there, you obviously have a much higher bullshit tolerance than I can ever hope to achieve because every moment outside of my hotel room and the convention center was pure hell. Jesus fucking Christ almighty does it feel fucking FANTASTIC to be back in Phoenix.
Anyway, here's a fairly terse rundown of this years show, I'll go into more depth after I eat.
Disappointments:
Halo 2- Open to print press only; ZERO floor presence, major fucking bummer MS/Bungie, MAJOR FUCKING BUMMER
Nintendo DS- I was allowed to play about 10 seconds of WarioWare in the "non-special" group of the show. That is to say, they picked 20 people out of 50 to go a different route (the DS was a special show/demo that you had to wait >1 hour for) who actually got to PLAY THE GAMES. The other 30 (me and Kid Aphex included) were treated with stupid tech demos and WarioWare. Big fucking deal. I got a lame ass t-shirt though. There was absoutely no reason for Nintendo to do this.
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War- Looks like Ace Combat 4, only with higher res textures. Eh. Wingman option is cool but likely useless in the end since I'd rather take out the entire opposing force myself anyway.
Devil May Cry 3- I was under the impression this game was graphically different than the others. It isn't. In fact, Dante is now the most homosexual he's ever been (shirtless faggot) and the gameplay is basically the same from DMC 1 and 2. The intro to the game also fucking blows. Pizza? GET FUCKING REAL.
Sega's Lineup- So boring I didn't even visit their booth.
North Hall- Nintendo's booth reigned SUPREME over this end of E3. Sony's booth was a borefest aside from World Rally Cross 4 and Killzone.
Dead or Alive: Ultimate- Not playable.
Advance Wars: Under Fire- Taking this game out of turn-based was a major mistake. Every single person I witnessed playing the game seemed completely overwhelmed by the task at hand, which was seemingly set up to be a rather mundane tutorial styled mission. What was before a battle of resource managment and strategic unit placement and calculation has turned into a total fucking button mash-fest where bullets are flying at you from more directions than are physically possible.
Surprises:
KOF: Maximum Impact- This game EXCEEDED my paltry expectations of it by a country mile and farther. Clean graphics, high-detailed character models, SNK-styled levels and quick gameplay. Alternate costumes (ENTIRE costumes, not just color swaps, i.e.- Terry has both his MOTW and "trucker" outfits) for every single character, and and overall clean presentation to boot. This is a definite future purchase and worthy of the KOF series.
Resident Evil 4- Honestly, if you're still SOMEHOW on the fence after undoubtedly watching movies of this game from E3, you're a goddamn moron. Easily the scariest game I've ever witnessed, I was scared for my life even playing on the crowded and epileptic showfloor. Best graphics in a game, ever. PERIOD.
Tekken 5- Granted its impossible to tell anything from a movie; but the levels look fucking spectacular beyond anything, I seriously can't wait to see more of this game in action. The new characters seem a bit bland though.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat- Although I probably looked like a complete retarded slapping and clapping my hands on and around the pair of plastic drums used to control this game, its honestly the most intriguing game I've EVER seen. I wish I would've played it sooner (and consequently, more than once) than the third day of the show.
Odama- This game epitomizes "way out in leftfield". For starters it was hidden at the very back corner of Nintendo's booth facing away from the general flow of traffic around the area. At its core Odama is a pinball game. However, on top of simply pinball mechanics you are in the middle of a real-time strategy game. You shove your army's giant metal ball the "Odama" around the battle field via pinball paddles at the bottom of the screen much like any pinball game. However you use the ball to destroy the opposing force's encampment, convert their soldier's onto your side, and to gain health. The basic goal of the demo that was shown was to get your "ladder crew" across the river and enemy's camp to prop it up against the cliff where the enemy warlord sat. Once the ladder had been set, you could shoot the Odama up into his realm and deal him some damage directly, the only way to win the round.
Xyanide- This under advertised shmup by Playlogic was a total surprise in that it looks utterly gorgeous every second its turned on, but that its control scheme is so bizarre that I can't wait to finally figure it out once this game drops.
Dead or Alive: Ultimate- Despite its absence in demo form from Tecmo's booth, the movie they showed of it looked amazing. I can't believe the amount of stage interaction they're packing in this game (ex: Slamming an opponent into the legs of an elephant on the African savannah level causes the elephant to stand up and honk its trunk in irritation)
King of Fighters 2003 (PS2 port)- The 3-D backgrounds look phenomenal. I MIGHT even buy this just for them.
Basically what I expected:
Gradius V- Easily already one of the hardest shooters I've EVER come across. I can tell already it'll be near UNFATHOMABLE to beat this game without at least one option at all times. Can't wait can't wait can't wait.
Neo Contra- Fun fun fun fun fun. All fun, all the fucking time. Levels are definitely longer than in Shattered Soldier, so anyone who complained about that game being "nothing but boss fights" will be pleased that the run n' gun sections are far longer and far more populated in Neo Contra. The perspective changes about 3 times a stage, being that each stage is divided into 3 sections. Although I enjoyed Shattered Soldier to it's core, Neo Contra takes the formula in a new and just as fun direction.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater- I'm sure in the interim you've all seen the trailer already. If not, do so at your earliest conveinence. The game basically plays like MGS2 with some nifty improvements on graphics and animation. Although I didn't play it enough to find a battery, using (by today's standards) outdated equipment (sonar, motion detector, etc) that runs on batteries sounds like a pretty cool notion. It was hard to get a good impression on this game in the noisy convention hall.
Mortal Kombat: Deception- Basically Deadly Alliance with better graphics, more characters and multi-layered levels a'la DOA. Thats about all I have to say on this game.
Thats all I can remember at this very second, I'm sure I'll post more (plus nifty pics!)
