Supergun AT Circuit Question

I've built a mono attenuation circuit with 10k .25w and 1k .25w resistors.

After about an hour of play, there is a kind of crackle and the music goes out.

This doesn't always happen and the sound effects don't go away.

What can I do? :(

The problem could have nothing to do with the AT circuit.....

Most of your problems would be with the sound circuitry on the PCB or a problem with the cartridge connector.

to be safe, I'd check all all of your connections for bad solder joints or shorts......

Well, my PCB is brand spankin' new.

So wouldn't it be pretty weird if the sound circuitry on the PCB or the cartridge connector were screwed up? ( I hope that doesn't sound prick-ish)

Now inside my enclosure, I have a JROK sitting underneath my PCB, could there be "noise" (pardon my total ignorance of electronics) or something like that coming off the JROK and messing up the sound on the PCB??

Also, I should look for bad solder joints at the +12V and ground connections, right?

How do I look for shorts (pardon my total ignorance of electronics again) ?

THANKS :)

I don't know.

Where is that anyway?

I have an MV-1C.

You can see it front left on this 1FZ, (the 1C has a black plastic cover over most of the board so have not been able to locate it from piccys)

Its the device with the heatsink and two nuts and bolts securing it to the board, it has HA 13001 marked on it. It will be near the volume control.

Cool, thanks.

I'll have to play some Neo and get it to screw up again, then I'll check to see if the component is getting hot.

Oh, what then if this thing is getting too hot?

Incidentally, all I have to do to fix it is turn off the system and the music and sound effects are fine when I turn it back on.

Is that turning it off and on again immeadiately, or after giving it time to cool down, say a few mins ???

Actually, last time I did it, I didn't give it cool down time. I just turned it off and turned it back on. It happens sporadically, I couldn't get it to do it last night. It's just really annoying when you get to a certain point in a game and you've gotta start over. Playing through it is even worse. In Puzzle Bobble, you hear the bubbles shooting off and popping and a heartbeat sound that intensifies, weird. Gotta keep playing.

What im getting at, if it is a heat related problem which would more likely be a problem around the audio output stage, alternatively a digital reset issue, in which case the problem is in a different location YM2610/Z80 maybe.

Well, I can't find anything like that near the volume control. There are several cylindrical components (transistors?) surrounding a large metal heat sink which is soldered to the board. The heat sink gets warm but nothing you can't touch comfortably. Everything else in that area is relatively cool.

how hot is hot enough to cause problems?

linear analog audio output problems around the HA13001 are easy to deal with.

The digital processing, which uses ADPCM (adaptive differential pulse code modulation), is trickier. If the problem is in the digital processing stage, YM2610 data/addresses to/ from the Z80 processor, things start getting more difficult to sort out.
