I need help. I've never really played SNK fighters before and I'm getting my ass whooped. I could really use some pointers and advice on how to play this game better.

I've used terry in Capcom vs SNK but all his moves seem too slow in this game (fatal fury special). Everytime I try to attack my special move is easly countered or blocked. Do you usually use the weaker/quiker attacks or the slow/powerful? Also, do you generally try to be agressive or counter/recact to the CPU. I don't know, I feel like I'm missing some key element becasue I'm never this bad at fighters. Is this game considered "hard" or should I not be struggling so bad with it?

If you're talking about FFS, then I will tell you I have a lot of success with the light buttons. They're pretty strong, and some characters have very fast jabs and shorts. Duck King's ducking short and standing jab is great! Try to link some moves together, too.

You need to speak to Southtown Kid about this game. It's "his" game, from what I gather.

Great game. Too bad people are turned off by the graphics. They don't know what they're missing.

I suppose we can teach you... but we can't school you unless you show up in a nearby arcade. ;)

I do pretty well in FFS, but it's more oldstyle play with traps instead of rushdown. Fireballs and fireball traps are still very important. Also, learning the plane system is important. I wish I remembered the game better, but basically if you cleanly switch to the other plane, you have set up a trap. You can wait for your opponent to plane switch and punish them, or if they advance on you without switching you can use a plane hit on them. Without that strategy, I'd have never between Krauser in FF2. :)

I don't find fireball traps all that big of a deal, thanks to the plane switch. Also, a key thing to remember in the game is the "reversal", or counter attack. Not sure what you call it, but it's where you hold back, the press forward and a button and it acts as a counter move of sorts. You are invincible for a short period of time, and you do an attack at the same time. Only thing I've hated about that is I can't do them that well with guys like Duck, who pressing back and then forward with a punch is a special move.

Great game. Great feel...

I had CPU play on the mind. VS is different of course, but I can't even remember the last time I played VS on FFS.

also, FF Special is one of those games where the CPU's A.I. is set at a really nice challenge: if you can get over the initial frustration of a CPU beatdown, you'll appreciate the fact that you earn your wins by developing good techniques and skills...

you'll find it's wise to spend a good amount of time "feeling out" each character you go up against...learn how aggressive/defensive they are and experiment with many different attacks & tactics to see how they react and which moves they use to counter you...

while you may find certain things which work in general, it's good to know how to adjust your game for each opponent...

other than that, you'll find timing can be vital...study the properties of your attacks and your opponents'...does a move have frames of invincibility/higher priority? are there certain parts where a move is vulnerable to being hit out of? what is a particular move/attack most effective for---hitting high/low? hitting jumpers? as a wakeup? to lure them in?

as you can see, there are countless variables which you can consider and I haven't even mentioned planes like neojedi...*whew* :D

but the keys to your approach should be patience and a willingness to experiment...after all the object of a game is to have fun, and that should include learning how to play better too...good luck and let us know how it goes!

So, just so I'm sure I understand, I should switch to the other plane and be waiting, then when the cpu tries to jump over, be ready for him with a special move?

thanks for all the tips and advice, i had no idea about the counter-attacks and i'm gonna try to "study" my opponents a little more. I am getting better though! Today I got to the 4th guy on normal mode!!!!!

Its tough trying to get into the SNK swing of things when all you've ever really played is Capcom fighters. The most experience I have with SNK is I'd sometimes be Iori in Capcom vs SNK. But I just got a Neo Geo because aside from really wanting to get into SNK fighters, I wanna know where all the characters from the SNK side come from and there back stories and whatnot.

I'm gonna get back to practicing!

It really makes me happy to see people play these old games for the first time. There's a lot of skilled involved with that game. In fact, there's this JPN website that has some sick combos on there. Combos that you wouldn't think possible with that engine. Great stuff.

indeed...I tip my hat to you Tuesday, for being willing to look beyond just what's out there nowadays and trying the old school...there is a whole world of fighters and other types of games that had their heyday before many came onto the scene...

kudos to you for having an open mind and an eagerness to indulge it...you are the kind of person there needs to be more of on the NEO boards and in the gaming scene in general...and since I didn't mention it before, welcome aboard

heh thanks for the welcome. I'm kinda suprised by the fact that your suprised I'm playing these games... whats everyone else doing with their Neo Geo here?

I've started playing on the beginer level till I get the hang of things, I made it to the 9th stage (!) but Kim broke me off.

Dun DUN Da Dun! I beat it! with 1 credit to spare!! ... it was in on the "beginner" difficulty but thats what I am :drool_2: . There are few moments in life that match the same type of overwhelming satasfaction as you get when you beat a fighter for the first time. mmm hmm good. I'm gonna go at the "easy" mode now.

What character(s) are you using? You can really control the CPU to do just about whatever you want, granted you have the AI embedded in your head.

Yeah, on pretty high levels, I can still make Kim my bitch with Duck King. There's certain things that you can do that will ALWAYS beat a Kim special with Duck.

hm...maybe I've been confused since I've been playing FF Special over FF2 for years now...

but if you didn't get an ending pic with some short dialogue and a credits roll after, then you're need to keep trying...

if you did, well I guess I'm getting senile and you can disregard my babbling about the ending stuff...

don't forget that the counter attack doesn't work all the time,
i.e. dodging joe's hurricane upper, although it usually dodges projectiles otherwise.
like jubei's fucking cookie.
there's alot to like about the game, and for it's time it's surprisingly deep.
I usually do well until I get to jubei or billy...

Yeah, Jubei is a little weiner, I hate fighting against him!

I'm not sure about Special but in FF2 you get some kind of special picture if you beat the game without losing a round or continuing or something.

In FFS if you finish the game without losing a round you fight Ryo Sakazaki (From Art of Fighting) after you beat Krauser.
