I have an older MDLP player, around 2-3 years old. I use it all the time for recording anytime I mix, I also record all my records over to md so I can listen them in to my Mazda P5 with the factory MD :D player in it. I also use it for recording The Essential Mix on Radio 1, live dj sets, and other down loaded music. One of the best things I have ever bought.

I have 2 or 3 of them...my friend kept bringing them back from Japan for me. I have the MZ 909 and some other one that is so freaking small Im scared to use it...

I only use them to record my sets...but I dont even do that now bacause my decks are hooked up directly to my comp...

iPod. I'm better than you :mr_t:

JK. I'm surprised that SONy has stuck with the MD format for so long. Remember the rumors that PS@ as going to have some kind of MD functionality? Or that their portable would. Happy days,

sad thing to say, but imo md is dead. of course it was never really popular in europe
in the first place. I have been a md fan for many years, but now I bought an iriver
ihp-120 and I think I will never use my md equipment again. problem was that I had
no real md deck, only a sharp ms702 for recording and a st55 for playback. I still love
the st55 for it's design, but 74min are just not enough. maybe lp would have helped,
but still. it just took way too much time to record mds. since most of my music is
stored on my pc, the iriver serves my needs much better. maybe things will change
with Hi-MD getting more established, but at the moment md is no real option.
at least for me.

I got the all black little model that sells for $99 , now they have one that comes witrh a car kit for the same price , i got my mom the $150 model for mothers day a few days ago it comes with tv radio and weatherband . Ive collected about 30 prerecorded discs . The minidisc has hits its stride only in the last 2 or 3 years and i still think from what ive last heard that the sony psp will have a hi-md drive in it backwards compatible with md .

I worry about going jogging with a hardrive (IPOD ECT) my net md player in 132kbps you can put about 4 cds per mini disc .

I use a Sharp MD-MT15 and it's swell. I use it to record CDs to (reminds me, I need to buy some more blanks...) and for, erm, recording phone calls.

Yeah, MD never really caught on, and with the technology like it is today, it never will. A cool idea that is just sort of a dinosaur these days. It's not like you can't use 'em if you already own 'em though - since it's a recordable medium.

HELLS YEAH I GOT MINIDISK! Just took a short road trip today and hooked that bad boy up in my car with the I Rock FM Reciever, and had a blast. The new sony ones with the advanced compression are amazing. 5 hours of music on one disk with VERY VERY little loss in quality (and still in stereo). Also, the thing runs on ONE AA batter for a FULL 5 hours in full compression mode. I have to say I am uber impressed.

Well, I want one.

I've been looking for a Sony MZ-1 for quite some time. It was the first MD player/recorder commecially released.

I just want it for collection purposes as I already have an ipod mini.

DCC? Woah, I totally forgot about that one. Did they ever make a portable DCC player/recorder? Can you even still find blank DCC?

WOW....time for you guys to get updated about MD's from yours truly =)

Being a MD advocate for about four years now, I always keep myself updated in the MD world. People always say, "I'm going to wait for the next generation of MD's before I think about getting one". Come and behold, that day has come....er...okay, I lied, it's coming in July =)

Media Capacity:
The new MD players called Hi-MD players will use Hi-MD disc that can hold 45 hours or music or ONE GIGA BYTE of data. It can also reformat your standard Mini disc to 300mbs. So right now its $1.50 for one MD, 300mb for $1.50 isn't a bad deal.

Transfer speed:
I'll keep it simple. Up to 100x via USB 2.0

Battery Life:
Sadly this is where they have to work on. Right now they are telling us 17 hours of usage or 9 hours of recording. Where as the the most recent regular MD players clock in at around 50 hours.

Hopefully this will give MP3 players a run for its money =)

OOPS! Almost forgot to give you sexy pictures of the new unit =)

Go here to be updated on ALL the new units =)

Yeah those new models are really nice. Maybe it's time to upgrade, the MD-MT15 is a "budget model" and having a remote would be cool :) (mine never had one, but IIRC you can use a remote for it for another model but the screen won't work).

I'm being kinda stupid here... the NetMD ones, they are like normal MD players (that let you record from line in or microphone) and also allow MP3 transfer, right? Is the quality pretty good for transferring MP3s? Because that'd be a CD PCM->MP3->ATRAC(#) conversion... Or are they directly transferred on to the MD player with no compression? I've tried transferring over some MP3s to my player via Line In and they sounded slightly worse, but like I said that's because of the extra compression. Also, do they use a built-in rechargeable battery or AAs? Could I get a decent NetMD player for around $45 (IIRC I paid about $35 for my MD player, I'd spend more though if I had to but I'd have to think about it)? Doesn't have to be modern, heck the MD-MT15 was already outdated when I bought it but it's worked fine for me. Are the NetMD ones as durable as the older ones? I'm not too clumsy with my stuff, but I remember reading many "horror story" type reviews for the MT15 where they got a tremendous shock and didn't even skip. Do most have a wristband attachment?

Before I get a new player though I REALLY need a new pair of headphones. What's a good pair in the $20 range?

And where can I get some good deals on blank MDs? minidisco.com has some nice ones...

Dont know if this will help or not, but... I have a NetMD model N510. It was $130 at bestbuy, but it came with ALL the accessories you would need for your car and other stuffs. Also came with one blank Gold MD from sony. So far, I've nad no problems (been about 6 months), and could not be happier with my purchase. On the full compression (5 hours), LP4 its still in full stereo but the quality drops slightly. LP2 compression (about 3 hours), sounds like an MP3 to me, as there is hardly any quality difference, just more space. Then there is the full stereo ATRAC, which you could fit about 1 CD on the MD with no compromise to quality. Thats what I've found anyway. As far as durability goes, I run with it, take it on trips, work outside with it, and hook it up to my home theater system when I'm working at home and dont feel like swaping CDs in and out. I've droped it a few times out of clumsyness, and not a scratch, dent, or loss of anything. I'm very impressed. I cant stand sony console systems (dont even get me started there), but I've never had a problem with their comsumer electronics.

I got a Sharp MD about 4 years ago when the technology was still new, and I rencetly upgraded. Good to hear about the new wave of MD players comming out. This is a great medium for music storage! :buttrock:

Thanks for the response, Yagami. Can anyone else answer my questions?

Looking around ever-so-slightly it seems that most models don't have line-in or mic-in, but I can use my MD-MT15 for that (strong little bugger, I love it).

One more question: Would it be possible for me to have multiple compression-types on my MD player? Like, some songs in LP4, some in LP2, and some just ATRAC?

I'm sure it would be possible to switch recording modes on a disc. I'll play around with mine and see if it's possible.

Right mp3's wma and realaudio i think !

Not there compressed i think you can go from 44kbps to 132 , it does change them from there original file format though into attrac but a comparible quality will take up the same amount of space .

I've tried transferring over some MP3s to my player via Line In and they sounded slightly worse, but like I said that's because of the extra compression.

No this is just a crppay way to do it port from your usb cable unless your doing records or somthing . Some models only have usb and some have both usb and line in . SOME ALSO HAVE AM/FM/TV/WETHER BANDS on them .

Also, do they use a built-in rechargeable battery or AAs?

Some models have built in chargers for AA and some you need to replace with regualr batteries . The box says they run up two 54 hours on a single aa battery i dunno but mine lasts a loooong time just listening , recording a battery will only make a couple of md's though .

Could I get a decent NetMD player for around $45 (IIRC I paid about $35 for my MD player, I'd spend more though if I had to but I'd have to think about it)? get the complete setup somebody ealrier was saying they got for $139 , its now $99 at best buy , with wall adapeter recharable battery , line in , cassesttte adapter remote , blank disc ect .

I'm not too clumsy with my stuff, but I remember reading many "horror story" type reviews for the MT15 where they got a tremendous shock and didn't even skip. Do most have a wristband attachment?

There even tougher now i think , i throw mine on the ground on purpose , never skips , there a arm strap carring case best buy sells for $15 .

Before I get a new player though I REALLY need a new pair of headphones. What's a good pair in the $20 range?

Yea sure .

And where can I get some good deals on blank MDs? minidisco.com has some nice ones...

even the grocery store sells blank md's , the stores in Iraq even had blank md's they cost about $1.50 each somtimes in ebay you can buy a lot of blank disc's 40 disc for $15 or somthing .

With all the sand in iraq and how mp3 cds last about a week , not having to worry about the discs scratching is another reason i bought minidisc

I was a huge MD fan. I've been with it since it launched in the states. I've gone through about 7 different units, from the regular ones to MD LP. Sadly though Sony with their shit software that came with the first NetMD recorders pissed me off to no end. The fucking thing worked fine for a year then one day it would stop transfering songs at 7%. I called customer support countless times, and tried all the fixes they told me and still nothing, the fucking thing would always stop at fucking 7%!! I finally gave up and sold my MD LP car deck, home deck and portable.

I've enjoying MP3 ever since. Got a nice MP3 car deck, and a simple portable cd player.

Although now I need something smaller to take to the gym with me, so today I'm making the jump to the uber gh3y Ipod. I'm getting the simple 15 gig unit.

Did someone say that new MD recorders can play actual MP3's or are they still converted to ATRAC?

I know my ass is VERY late on this, but I really want to buy a MD player and need help on finding a good one for various use (Mixing, CD-to-MD, LP-to-MD, etc.). I've found one at Sony's site (Sony MDS-JE480 ), but I'm not sure if it's good.

Can anyone help please?
