I've been out of the anime scene for about two years now. Looking at my avatar and name, you may think I'm a huge anime nut. Truth is, only Cowboy Bebop, Lain, Ranma, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Akira really do it for me.

I admit I haven't been into it as much. Has there been anything new that came out that's heads and shoulders above the rest like the ones that I enjoy? I think Trigun's *pretty* good....

Anything that I've missed? What would you suggest? Will anything ever come close to beating NGE as the best anime series ever?

Yeah, FLCL is definitely great. As much as I've seen of Wolf's Rain, I've been liking it.

NGE as the best anime ever? Wow, just wow...

FLCL is recommended... Although I consider this a Love/Hate anime... You either hate it or love it...

Wolf's Rain was okay to say the least... But I guess I was expecting more from the Bebop Crew...

Geez, I was going to come in here and say FLCL, but never mind. It definitely impressed me more than just about anything else in the past 10 years, but it really is a love it or hate it kind of deal. Hopefully all this hype doesn't build it up to the point you can't enjoy it.

if you liked Lain you should definitely check out Texhnolyze. it's a very
recent tv series featuring Yoshitoshi Abe designs and a story that
is mainly told through the visuals.
Hellsing has a great plot line, but I am a bit unhappy with the realization.
Rahxephon is another mecha anime targeting an a bit older audience.
And what about Witch Hunter Robin, the follow up production of the
Beebop team. You have to like slow paced stories though.

if you are not dependent on subs/dubs I would also recommend
mousou dairinin aka Paranoia Agent a very stylish, twisted mystery story.
this one will certainly have a dedicated fan base in the near future.

Another for the time being Japanese-only title is Gilgamesh,
by some people accused to have very ugly designs. I appreciate them
very much though. somehow reminded me a bit of older stuff.
another dark and promising looking anime series.

Everyone that I've shown Heat Guy J to has loved it, so you could give that a try. (The lead character is also a bit like Spike in that he a laid-back, cool, lanky, martial arts badass).

Right now a personal favorate of mine is Kino's Journey. Its very different to any other anime I've ever seen. A relaxed-paced story of a traveller exploring different towns and countries all with their own unique twists and dark secrets. While it usually plods along at a sedate pace, there are times when the action really kicks up several notches, which makes the action scenes all the more intense and sometimes shocking.
Not for everyone though. Its just my personal favorate at the moment.

whoa!!
It seems AWESOME
and I didn't know anything about it
I've just made a quick search and It seems R1 version sucks for dubbing and subtitles quality, while R2 jap version is in japanese only, too bad
I'll get it anyway, It's DEFINATELY my genre

thanks a lot for the link
and Wilkommen ;)

Err, where did you read that?
The Texhnolyze dub is basically fine. It isn't mis-cast and all voice-actors do a good job (the minimal dialogue is the only thing preventing it from being classed as a 'great' dub).
I couldnt comment on the subs as I dont speak japanese so I cant say how accurate they are.

Rest assured, if yer looking for some anime that is a bit different to the norm, Texhnolyze is a good buy, and I dont have any problem with the R1 release.

Not new, but those who hunt elves. I read pretty good reviews on it, anybody want to comment on it?

Judging by your tastes I'd probably have to go and reccomend Hellsing. I think you'll like it. Also check out the Vampire Hunter D movies, they should work well for you too.

If you're feeling a bit adventurous check out Naruto. It really is as good as we all say it is. ;)

Fun stuff, and verry silly. Not sure if it would be to Spike's tastes though.
Its a lighthearted tale of a Japanese schoolgirl, a tank, a martial-arts meathead and a hollywood actress who get transported into a fantasy world. There they have to track down spell fragments with the help of a high priestess (who somehow ends up transformed into a dog). The spell fragments are all attached to the skin of female elves, which means they have to go arround stripping elves to find them.
Its all fairly innocent slapstick stuff (no nipples here folks) and a good whay to kill a few hours.
With 6 episodes per disk its good value for minimal investment.
Anally-retentive anime fanboys will no doubt be offended at the heavy rewrites done to the dub in episodes 5-12 in season 1 (though the rewritten script is actually very funny), however, season 2 sticks closer to the original script.

Like I said though. I dont think this is something Spike would want to watch.

Heat Guy J is good.

One thing I want to point out is Kino's Journey. I picked this one up preorder as soon as Rightstuf put it up without knowing anything about it. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. The 'cannibal' episode was REALLY interesting...

As far as Anime I'd recommend, if you're looking for movies, check out Millennium Actress. The R1 DVD is sub only, so if you don't want to read, skip it. It's not action packed but it's got one hell of a story to it and is really well animated.

If you like Ranma, check out another Takahashi Rumiko work... InuYasha. It's super long but I really enjoy it.

There's plenty more to recommend, but I'll leave it at that for now, since most people don't want to read more than 2-3 paragraphs.

If you enjoy old stuff (these are new series, but based on old characters of old style):

- Ginga Tetsudou Monogatari (Galaxy Railways);
- Captain Herlock;
- Macross Zero (it's cooler if you know the previous series).

And some others:

- Last Exile (not too new);
- Scrapped Princess (one of the ebst medival fantasy anime series ever made IMHO)
- Bakuretsu Tenshi;
- Nurse-Witch Komugi-chan (cooler if you know the Soultaker OVA series, and know lots of 70's and 80's Tatsunoko anime series).

Very funny, but have ups and downs, and the humour in this series can sound too cliche or slapstick to more exigent public.

The 2nd series in much more funnier, because the "craziness" factor was triplicated... worth check.

I downloaded the first ep of Heat Guy - J and didn't like it that much... Maybe it's just me... I watched all of L/R (Liscenced By Royal) and it's not that bad either... Both animes are Cowboy Bebopish but not even close to touching Bebop...

Good recent titles like Last Exile, Witch Hunter Robin, and Hellsing were mentioned.

I'd recommend S-Cry-Ed also... I'm 1 disc from the end and it's still very good. :)

As for things that didn't make the grade, I'm on the verge of selling Samurai Deeper Kyo which is getting much crappier in the later episodes. Same with Silent Mobius... so much potential wasted in the end. Same with X... I'm about halfway through and I have no desire to continue. Too much style without substance.

something like that for example, from amazon.com
and It was the softer
But do be warned that the R1 subs are a little awkward and the dub script utterly abominable. Don't let this turn you away from a work of genius, though. If you think this show is stock or predictable, you're falling into the trap. That's what they want you to think, then they turn it all upside down! Stay tuned for an awesome and shocking show, people.

not that I take other reviews as the truth, but many people had this impression

btw
as I said, this won't stop me...and anyway jap R2 version doesn't have eng subtitles and surely I'm not getting a crappy HK bootleg
thanks for info

The All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku TV series just recently got over to the U.S. and I was a HUGE fan of that show when I lived in Japan. I have all the CDs.

I'll second this one. Millenium Actress is absolutely fantastic -- one of the best things I watched last year. The director's latest release (also available as a sub-only R-1 DVD), Tokyo Godfathers, is probably going to be one of the best of this year -- a particularly good watch if you're into holistic stories, like I am.

Glad to see another Brigadoon fan here -- only saw a few eps when it was released in Japan, but I liked what I saw (been meaning to watch the whole thing, since it's from the creator/staff behind Gaogaigar and BETTERMAN). I enjoyed FLCL, but Mahou Shoutengai Abenobashi was much more my cup of tea -- nice to see others enjoying it, too. LAST EXILE is, simply put, great stuff. And Golden Boy will always own.

There's a new Tetsujin 28-gou (aka, Gigantor) anime tv series airing in Japan. Saw the first ep last week, and it's utterly brilliant. The color palette alone is a stroke of genius, looking like the color front cover of a 1950s/60s manga brought to life. Fans of Yokoyama Mitsuteru's other works (Babil II, Giant Robo, etc.) should not miss it.

Brigadoon, as stated previously, is quite brilliant. It's a sleeper hit if there ever was one. I've never seen a series where they've treated the main character so poorly and not had them go crazy. Good stuff.

Abenobashi kicks the shit out of FLCL IMO. It's funny, well animated and makes a hell of a lot more sense on an initial viewing. FLCL is the type of show you need to watch a couple of times to get a grasp on it.

Dash no Chris- I have Tokyo Godfather's but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. My to be watched pile keeps getting bigger and bigger and I end up going back to rewatch other series instead... I'm currently running through Mobile Fighter G Gundam. I LOVE super robots, just wish there were more available in the US for it.
