I was bored this weekend and happened across Space Channel 5 part 2. After going through the 6 stages I can't get those nutty tunes outta my head!! Even though the game is pretty old it still plays great, too bad we'll never see Ulala again.

Incidentally, whatever happened with that lawsuit between Sega and Dee-lite?

I got a demo for the PS2 one and I cant stand it. Its just not very good. If I want to play a music game it will be Parappa.

I got it, it's pretty good. The music is also quite addicting in that retro 60s (Austin Powers) kind of way. You definitely know which movie was popular when this game came out(something that will forever date the game). You can definitely tell the huge difference between Space Channel 5 and Space Channel 5 Part 2. Space Channel 5 Part 2 has much better time event coding and is quite *spot on* with the timing of inputs. Something, the first one faltered on a bit (as well as every Parrappa game, so far). Part 2 came after that solid breakthrough of SNK's Cool Cool Toon, and it shows in the timing. I still credit Cool Cool Toon as the first music input game where the correct timing for user input was perfectly in line with the music, the whole time. Surprisingly, it also made "first in line" as the music game that specifically used an analogue control scheme. Man, I got to play Cool Cool Toon again.

Space Channel 5 is a good game (I've only played the first one). But you're definitely right dude, Parappa The Rapper 2 is an awesome game. I still need to pick it up as I've only played the demo over and over again on the PS2.

Now that I think of it, I remember hearing about Cool Cool Toon, but i've never played. Maybe i'll hit evilbay and try to dig up a copy.

And you're right on the timing stuff. That's one of the reasons why I never really played part 1 that much. Stuff that I KNOW I shouldn't have missed I would miss. Plus you can tell in part 2 Sega did exactly what they wanted to do. They had fun with that game and it shows. It'd be great to see a part 3 on the GC....

Now that I think about it, been playing a lot of dreamcast lately. SF3:TS, SF3DI, Hydro Thunder,Space Channel 5, Space Channel 5 p2, and Metropolis Street Racer.

edit: yeah, Parappa is pretty good. I used to have the first game but something happened to it. I need to get it again and the second one. Good stuff there as well.

Space Channel 5 is great fun, I bought it for my girlfriend, she loves it...

THERE *IS* a devastating cheat though... after putting it in, there doesn't seem much point of trying to conquer the harder levels... because you can just sit back...

Code Effect
Pause, then while holding L1 and R1, press Circle, Triangle, Square, then unpause the CPU will take over and play PERFECTLY until you turnthe code off

I paid $10 for Parrapa 2. The game is WAY to easy, especially if I[/i] can win it the first time through. The first one is much better than P2.

I haven't picked up SC5-2 yet, I just haven't felt like spending the money on it. I have the DC SC5, it's alright, I just never got into it that much.

I got Um Jammer Lammy a couple of weeks ago... it's also good especially after you unlock parappa.

I still haven't played SC5-2 yet. :(

What about beatmania?

I consider Beatmania a little bit different. I really should've clarified the style a bit more. Beatmania games were more designed like tracker programs unlike the more abstract music games like Parrappa, SC5, Cool Cool Toon. If anybody used a tracker program (tracker programs were usually used to mix sequences of samples together(sometimes with realtime sample manipulation controls), often in a 4 or more track layout. The look is very close to Beatmania's look, without the 2-player idea and the video image window.) Plus, with the very stripped-down nature of Beatmania's graphics, it better be precisely on time. It doesn't abstract itself with all kinds of realtime graphics, snazzy art styles, and such, like the other games mentioned.

You're right, the only time when you directly effect the video (which sometimes goes along with the music) is it will start to get fuzzy if you hit the wrong notes/miss notes.

Parappa 2 has the freestyle system though. Its more about getting massive points on freestyling than getting the song exactly like it is presented to you.

Thats what all those huge gaps in songs are for.

And the songs are better.
