Currently, I'm working on giving a beat-up NGCD a little bit of maintenance together with a friend of mine. The psu needs to be opened to take care of some loose cables but we're having troubles unscrewing the damn thing, these screws neither are torx nor some of those odd torx-like things.

Can anyone tell me what type these NGCD psu screws are and what kind of tool I need for them?

We could always drill them open and replace them with proper screws but the new owner of the NGCD does not want us to do that...

With "odd torx-like" you mean System Zero? (the type used on SNES) Because I remember seeing an official AES PSU that had those (I don't have a NGCD PSU).

Yes, that's the one, only the gaps on the head are a bit smaller.

"System Zero is a tamper resistant, external drive range of screws..."... yeah, "tamper proof" seems to be correct, and not only that, it's maintenance proof as well I guess.

Now, if those screw holes weren't so narrow we could grab and turn the screws with pliers but the only one we have that would be small enough for the holes is also too small to build up enough torque.

Anyway, thanks MKL!

You're in Germany, right? RS-components have the System Zero bits. However I don't know the size of the screws and can't tell what bit you need exactly (and if it will actually work for your purpose).

www.rs-components.de
(type in the code 542-116)

Hope it helps!

Just so you know, they're called "Gamebit" in Japan, and "external line head" everywhere else. 'System Zero' sounds like a proprietary trade name.

A little off-topic, but do any of you know if this is the same hardware that is used in the back center screw on the Game Gear? Just curious.

Yes, it's the same. It's used on most all post-NES Nintendo hardware except the gameboy, Genesis carts, the TG-16/PC-Engine...

Why bother get a screwdriver when you can use an old plastic pen and a lighter?
