Can any IDE cable work with these? or are they custom made. I'm not too "up" on my IDE cables and have only found 3-way 40-pin types on eBay. Are these correct and if not what type do I need? and where can I find them? I also need info on the 4-pin cable that joins with the headphone ports
Thanx.

Yes you can use one and a half standard HDD IDE cables, you will need to file away the key way. The standard PC HDD IDE cable has 40 pins, split the other in half.

There are two MV-1C cables, so you require 3 40 pin IDE cables to do this.

The 4 pin headphone socket is easy.
pin 1 is left, 2&3 ground and 4 right.

Hey,

Why not buy the original cables from these guys for $25??

http://www.thegameroom.com/index.htm

As for the the headphone hook ups, I took some speaker wire & soldered them onto the ends of an old cd-rom audio cable that I had.

C-DVDSC.jpg

I made it the same length as the MV-IC cables & zip tied them on to it. Unfortuneatly my Super Neo 29 Candy cab doesn't have a space to mount it, so I just mounted it inside under the board where the PCB sits for now. Also, to make it a bit easier to take out the my 4 slot and not have to deal with a mess of cables & wires, I made it so all the ends on the MB side had quick disconnects. I hope this helps? :smirk:

Thanks guys. I'd buy some from the gameroom but they wont ship to the UK, where I am. I've been keeping my eyes on eBay and here to see if anyone is selling either the reader or the leads. I guess I'll have to keep on looking. Thanks again.

I was under the impression they were kind of scarce nowadays.
Perhaps the IDE option is the wat to go.

Hey,

You might want to try PM'ing Robert Wallace? I think he has a set he's selling? Worth a shot? Laters... :smirk:

I need a set now 2..

So if theres 2 cables needed, why is it that you need 3 IDE cables to split?

Anyone have pics of the cables so i can figure it out? I've got plenty of old IDE cables to make my own.

Because a standard PC hard drive IDE cable has 40 pins and a MV-1C memory card reader cable has 60 pins. 1.5 X 40 = 60 so you will need to split one of the three down the centre. I dont know why they designed it like this, more than half the pins are common ground, it could have been connected by a single 60 pin cable.

Here is the pin out for anyone keen enough to do a hard wire job
As you can see from the pin out, 68 of the 120 connections are either common ground or not connected. This is from a previous post.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The pin outs for the MV-IC memory card reader are as follows. This will allow a direct hook up from the 68 pin memory card reader socket and the motherboard bypassing the MV-IC (so all that is required is the PCMCIA socket/port).It should be noted that there are no active discrete components on the MV-1C board. I will add some close up piccys later as my image hosting is down at the moment. BTW this has not been hardware tested yet but the continuity has been double checked several times, Im confident its OK but accept no responsibility for any fuck ups.

Looking at the component side of the MV-IC with the reader socket slot facing forward, the 68 pins are laid out as shown below.(in 4 rows)

Rear of socket 2,4,6,8 etc;........34
Third row 1,3,5,7 etc;........33
Second row 36,38,40,42 etc;....68
Front (first row) of socket 35,37,39,41 etc;....67

Now the connections from the 68 pin reader socket to the two 60 pin interconnects, CN 6 and CN 7 from the MV-IC to the same sockets on the motherboard.

CN6 : CN7
-------------------------------------------------
CN6/ Reader CN6/Reader: CN7/Reader CN7/Reader
-------------------------------------------------
1A GND 1B GND : 1A 2 1B GND
2 36 GND : 2 3 GND
3 37 GND : 3 4 GND
4 38 GND : 4 5 GND
5 39 GND : 5 6 GND
6 40 GND : 6 7, 42 GND
7 41 GND : 7 8 GND
8 42,7 GND : 8 9 GND
9 NC GND : 9 10 GND
10 NC GND : 10 11 GND
11 NC GND : 11 12 GND
12 46 GND : 12 13 GND
13 47 GND : 13 14 GND
14 48 GND : 14 15 GND
15 49 GND : 15 51,52,17,18 GND
16 50 GND : 16 51,52,17,18 GND
17 51,52,17,18 GND : 17 19 GND
18 51,52,17,18 GND : 18 20 GND
19 53 GND : 19 21 GND
20 54 GND : 20 22 GND
21 NC GND : 21 23 GND
22 33 GND : 22 24 GND
23 61 GND : 23 25 GND
24 NC GND : 24 26 GND
25 NC GND : 25 27 GND
26 64 GND : 26 28 GND
27 65 GND : 27 29 GND
28 66 GND : 28 30 GND
29 67 GND : 29 31 GND
30 GND 30B GND : 30 32 30B GND

There is also a 4 pin audio socket on the board, that connects to the two 3.5mm stereo headphone jacks which are connected in parallel.(standard connection ie tip left, ring right and ground)

This socket is marked MAIN PCB, the pin out is:

1. Left
2. Ground
3. Ground
4. Right

The table doesnt line up very well on the post will link to a more readable version.

Yeah - it's a super old bump, but I was chatting just now and wanting to finally hook up my memory reader.

just wanted to check whether i need to connect both cn6 AND cn7 for it to work, or whether i can just wire up cn6 (which i assume is player 1)

I can go get some cables to try it out tomorrow, but i'd rather spend the minimum since for all i know the reader may be broken :(

I guess i'll get two of the £3.99 ones from here http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=28723&doy=14m1

anyone forsee any problems? does it matter whether it's IDE or IDC?

Can you help with these two questions?

You will need to connect both leads, its not a case of CN6/7 for player 1/2.

does it matter whether it's IDE or IDC? No, as long as it fits, the keyway will have to be trimmed off.

I think you will find that the two sockets are for separate I/O data and addresses.
So it may save with one connected (not sure which one) but would not read. I have not tried this but assume so.
As mentioned in the other thread, more than half the connections on each are either NC or common ground- they could have got away with a single 60 pin connector for the memory card reader hook up.
See the PCMCIA pin out here
http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_PCMCIA.html
When i get some time, might ID the actual pins for reference.
