Driving around at odd times of the day and night, I have made a realization that there is a ton of road work being done all over the place. And most of it is completely unnecessary it seems. Like they just want to put people to work at something simple.

It's not much different from one of the FDR plans to stop the depression. You know, give people manual labor because it helps build the country and it's relatively inexpensive.

But this method of bringing up the employment in the US just pisses me off because I have places to go, and traffic jams due to road work at 12 pm or 3:30 am aren't one of them.

That's been going on for decades. Their annual budget for roadwork is determined by what they used the previous year. If they don't spend their entire budget, they have to give the remaining money back, and their next year's budget is decreased. So they just spend it all on whatever bullshit they can come up with so the money will keep rolling in.

I can relate. I live in Silver Spring, & it takes about 30 min to my workplace at Annandale, if there is little traffic. Since I have to report by 10 AM, morning traffic isn't that bad. On evenings, though, the average is well over an hour--with everyone incl gov officials getting out at 6 PM. And on bad days, it takes upto an hour and 45 mins when I get out from the office. I thought that I got used to it, but it drove me nuts yesterday.

Since I am in mortgage, good economy isn't that great for me either--not that it's a bad thing ;)

I know exactly what you mean. Central NC has the most construction I've ever seen going on at once (both road and building), and my school is even worse. I think my school's construction has something to do with the time limit running out on their government money. More idiotic federal government bullshit.

w03d.

My old man used to tell me about how my grandpa used to work for the "WPA" which is close to what you described.

Yea, I remember when I was in London in 2000, all of this traffic moved in this tiny-ass streets. People were courteous, stopping and letting oncoming traffic pass by on the narrow streets. They made good use of their roads. It was about this time of year I was there, and little construction was being done. Let's see 'em pull that off in the U.S. of A Fat chance!

I get to deal with it even out here in the sticks. They're tearing up ~1 mile of road which delays driving time by about 15-20 minutes with the gay detours you have to take. I don't mind road work so much, but they take their sweet time getting it done in the rural areas. I remember when I lived in the city, they didn't mess around - road work was done in 2 weeks or less!
