*Bookmark added (for inspiration)...

Really great stuff your friend has there! I love his style of illustration. Some of it kind of reminds me of Templeton's stuff.

The only thing is the website. Not very easy to navigate (hitting that back button a lot). I take it the same one who did the art did the site? Shame. He should get someone to make a nice little flash site for him. It'd showcase his great work in a slick way. Just a thought. :)

To be honest I don't think he made the site, I can see what you mean though.

very hard to navigate , but I think that may be its purpose - being an arty-farty type affair, I didn't think he wanted to conform - or something.

thanks for the comments.

I always wanted to do the scraps of paper navigation thing... I was thinking about working over my website like that. I guess in practice it is a bit clunky, but it just looks interesting. I wanted to have my whole site looke sketched in black and white... rough lines, etc, still might, but I can see where subcons is coming from, it has to be easy to navigate. HOWEVER.. NO FLASH!!! Played out... Played out! ;)

That site could EASILY look the same and be more user friendly. The concept of it is great, don't get me wrong there. But I've seen that done before where it looks good and is easy to navigate at the same time.

And Flash isn't played out. There are just a lot of people out there using it to make sites that have no eye for design. I don't like techy flash sites personaly. Simple design that communicates is all that's needed. Flash is just a really great program for making that happen in a dynamic way. Just my opinion.

The Master

Well people, I am here! Is this Shaun's doing? I can't be sure)
Hello

I've just been reading your comments, very interesting, lot's of talk about 'teck' stuff about noy much chat about the work in hand, the subject matter etc, but hey, that's ok.
But let me clear up a few things for you all. The site was 'designed' by me, the first one I made, ever, and it was done in Dreamweaver, i'll add it was a pretty easy, now i'm not a computer person and I don't care much about userfriendlyness much, as long as I can quickly show my clients the work and not spend half the day dancing across London to show them my portfolio. However I will take on board all of the comments and maybe if I have the time to make it a little easier to move around, add some more buttons and all.
Umm, wot else? can anyone here see my work used in computer games? just an idea.
real fucked up game eh?

Well folks, you all take it easy now.

Regards,

Daryl.

PS, wot does played out mean? re: Flash

Hey man, kernow showed me this in chat and its truely amazing.

The subject matter is a little sad (or at least it seems so to me) and I like the brian wilson ones.

I draw things sort of like you do, except no where near as good or complex.

edit: What medium do you use for most of those?

Yes, I guess you are Mr "not Sonic"

I get the feeling you sir are a little confused by what you saw, your brain probably could not take on board what was going on, do you make 'doodles' when talking on the phone? are they like the drawings and paintings that you saw at the site, no, of course not, these are big paintings, bigger than your bedroom wall, you know?
The wall covered with FHM posters and racing cars.
Why try to understand what you saw, and if you don't like it then, well ask yourself
what it was you didn't like, then, come back here and try your hardest to write something more intelligent and interesting. I mean, Artsy Fartsy? It’s all a little 80's don't you think?

Should I be drawing 'Manga' to please you?

Love,

Daryl.

No I think I'm with Not Sonic...
What the hell is going on here with this site. I don't understand what it's for or about. They look like little kid's drawings. Or is it suposed to be that way as a joke. WOT if you ask me.

Daryl,

I didn't mean to derail the topic away from your artwork. Really, it's great work and I admire it quite a lot. But, being the person I am, whenever I look at a website, I immediately look at how it communicates to the person looking at it. Maybe it has something to do with loving graphic design, who knows? :D

I could tell that someone less "techy" made the sight. It's not bad, it just navigates rather clunky. I understand your viewpoint regarding your site: you just want to be able to show your work. But when it comes to the field of art, you and I both know presentation is key. As a designer, I think you might sell yourself even better with a sight that's more user friendly. I would think as an artist you might know some well versed designers. I'd ask around and see if anyone would want to make a site for you. Most designers would I think, assuming they like your artwork on a personal level.

Just my two cents. :)

Oh, and "played out" means "used too much," for lack of a better explanation. Flash has really caught on around the internet in the past few years. A lot of people use it, even when they shouldn't be. Some sites just work better in HTML. Yours works fine in HTML, I think it just needs a little tweaking at least.

Oh Dear, you didn’t listen to a word I said did you?

Shame.

Why are you so angry? Do you have any friends?

I have no idea what you are talking about re: your posters, Computer games?

“Shitty kindergarten-esque anatomy?” Now, I think you are trying here to form your argument but then you seem to bail out with your next comment, which is quite ambiguous to say the least.

Try harder…

meh im not even going to get involved beyond this.

the argument is going no where, you have a firm belief that you've got 'art' and i call it shit thats all there is to it.

i addressed all of your comments, so i dont understand what you dont.

Meh. There really is no need for argument about this any ways. It's art. You either like it or you don't. I can tell if I like a piece of art immediately. It either speaks to me or it doesn't. And that's fine.

However, I'm willing to bet that anyone saying that Daryl's stuff looks like "shitty artsy fartsy doodles" or "little kid's drawings" doesn't make or look at art on a regular basis. Anyone care to comment? It's one thing to not like it, but to say that about it is something else entirely. And besides, I personaly find children's drawings some of the most interesting stuff to look at. So I'd say that's kind of a compliment more so than an insult. There's a lot of thought process going on in this stuff and it really shows with this style of illustration.

Your stuff is really great Daryl, but it's a given that a lot of people aren't going to "get it"...
