Anyone have a problem with the romantisation(sp?) of the Mafia? For a long time, it has been in the pop culture. Do you think people understand how the mafia really is? The mafia isnt a joke, people got killed and lives got ruined. Thoughts?

romanticization

In a culture that glorifies the working class hero, the mafia is the ideal anti hero. We love stories of violence, of companionship and loyalty, and of success. Few things hit so many of our desires as organized crime. Truly the mafia is the American dream personified.

Sure people get killed. Mafia ties are everywhere. Hell, mediterranean people are the people to ask for mafia info. We got some of the most fucked up mafia's.

There are many of them.

So far I've found info on:

Sicilian Mafia: (The OG mafia, historically I believe it ties to french oppression)
Many families have become famous in hollywood, Gotti for a good example.

Grecian Mafia: Alot of drug dealings, Spiro Valentzas operates out of philly with a whole crew of these people. A good way to spot them is to look for guise's like "The Greek"

Italian and Greek mafia's suit together under similar circumstances. It all depends though. As spiro caused a stir by making one of the top people bow to his knees and beg for his life.

Cuban Mafia: One of the most stylishly stereotyped mafia's. Its all about cocaine, ala columbia. These peeps are dangerous as fuck.

Russian Mafia: I find this very interesting. Any russian members want to clue in?

Chinese mafia: Triads. One of the most influential as well as organized. Expanded to amazing heights.

Japanese Mafia: Yakuza and many others. Yakuza is the most famous. Like many grecian mobs, they are very secretive.

Persian Mafia: Same as greek and italian suits, pretty much the same deal. Nothing unique. I know little about them and find it interesting.

There is more, but they dont have a known publicity. Many Albanian crews exist as well.

Everyone forgets about the Mafia 'Cartels' of Central & South America, which
mostly concentrate in the organized crime (Kidnapping Rich People & of course
the DRUG transporting to Mexico and the US).

I'd be willing to be some mainland Chinese triads outdo a crapload of the other mafias...
I know for a fact that in less-wealthy large cities, triads will abduct children, blind them and cut off their legs, then put them on the streets to collect money for them.

Sad motherfuckers. Should kill em all :oh_no:

mafia is quite an ancient word and there're a lot of theories about its origin

the first official document with the word "mafia" in, regards a witch condemned to death at the end of 1600 in southernItaly:
"Caterina da Licatisa"
they used the adjective "mafia" to describe her arrogance, will to power and bravery

some people says the word can derive from the ancient arab "Ma afír"
some others say It derives from the initials of this sentence "Morte Alla Francia. Italia Anela" . It means: frogs...aheam..."France to death, Italy resurrects"
obviously related to the french oppression in Sicily

anyway till the end of 1800 the word mafia didn't describe the criminal organization itself yet
but just men of courage and bravery or beautiful but "dangerous" women

the criminal organization used to be called "camorra",even in Sicily, and its men "mafiosi"
infact "camorra is still the word used in my city (Napoli/Naples) for our criminals, a far more ancient word, It derives directly from latin
....oh btw...camorra is now widely considered the most powerful and influential criminal organization on earth.... :glee:

in 1865, It was the first time, at least "officially", a man was found guilty of a "mafiarelated offense"....so we can say for sure It's since end of 1800, begins of 1900 that "a man of mafia" is considered a criminal

meh....I hope you've understood something

however
things are NOT that complicated
the mafia as organizarions was something born to help poor people
at that time Italy was a fucking mess and especially the south was kinda FarWest, no rules, no government and an already broken kingdom

I can say It was something, yes criminal, but not so bad till 1950
then with the first drug dealings things started to get fucked up, people got crazy and started killing each other even more than before.
no more respect, no more rules and nowaday the end of socialist states in eastern Europe contributed to add more and more mess
lot of people from my city went to work to Russia to teach local mafia cuz government basically dont give a shit and there're a lot of people with huge quantities of money and weapons but no experience

well intersting stuff to discuss...but now gotta back to work

Where in the hell did you get that one? "Persian Mafia" isn't even an organization, let alone criminal one. "Persian Mafia" was an adjective coined in the movie "Clueless" that describes the more materialistic and pretentious Persians (initially in West LA, but now the term is found throughout the Persian Community).

There's never been a Persian mob, we joke how lame it would be if we started one.

Correcto mundo.

It's sad. People say China's communist... China is capitalism at it's worst.
Some people, like the triads, will stop at nothing to get money :(

Most of the stuff they do don't even qualify as gang activity or organized crime... it's just crime against humanity

China is communist, the Triads ruled Hong Kong while Hong Kong was a British possession. I don't know what has been going on since HK was put back into the hands of the Chinese government but I bet it hasn't change the underworld. I do dare you to find Triads in Pekin though...

I hope you guys know that a good numbers of HK movies are financed by the Triads...

About the mafia, I had two words of advice from people who have been in connections with them... Don't join. Rumor has it that if your not from a family or a close friend, relative, when they'll get paranoid, it's not going to be pretty for your health.

LMFAO that is the dumbest shit I have ever heard in my life.
For your information...
HK triads are WEAK AS ALL FUCKING HELL. They do some drug trafficking, OMG!
The mainland ones are the REAL triads.

Yeah, what sort of movie would the triads finance huh? LOL.
Young and Dangerous? Starring a bunch of pretty HK boys as triad members getting killed? Yeah, that makes a LOT of sense.

Sorry dude, the triads did NOT run HK while Britain was in possession of it

Apparently the mafia paid for The Sopranos too?

EDIT:
Explain to me how China is communist if you can own private property, and there are *laws* protecting private property

So I guess Jackie Chan is a fucking liar?

And that you are in China right now telling me this?

As I can see, being gone one year isn't enough for this forum to grow a brain. :oh_no:

Uh, you listened to Jackie Chan?
Who's the dumbass now?

First of all, Jackie Chan can't even read and write. Did you know that?
Second... you listened to an action star/singer talk about conspiracies in the HK government?

Dumbass. Besides, I'm from China, I have relatives and friends there, I get my stuff firsthand, *from people who can read*

I heard about some jewish crews in NY. More like small clique's then mob's. I could be wrong though about this as I cant recall a single famous name.

Okay, some people, somewhere have problems with the everyday definition of "mafia".

If you read the article, the mafia in question is:
"an armed anti-revolutionary clique", "leftists" and "reformers"

This author is clearly using the 4th definition below:
[From the American Heritage Dictionary]
Mafia:
(1) A secret terrorist organization in Sicily, operating since the early 19th century in opposition to legal authority.
(2) A secret criminal organization of Italian origin operating in the United States and engaged in illegal activities such as gambling, drug-dealing, and prostitution.
(3) Any of various similar criminal organizations, especially when dominated by members of the same nationality.
(4) Informal. A tightly knit group of trusted associates, as of a political leader: “ [He] is one of the personal mafia that [the chancellor] brought with him to Bonn”

It could, maybe, be the 3rd definition, but that's stretching. Regardless, this is obviously the wrong definition of "mafia" for this thread.

Mafia is mafia. Hell, you could re-read that a thousand times and have alot of definitions. I dont think this is so important its worth even arguing over. If you noticed how short my initial post was, you get my idea of this as it stands. Mafia are simply translated to me as a group of CRIMINALS.
A clique is a clique, still criminals. See, the problem is,I bet I could post a thousand links up, and you would search endlessly through each to justify something that will make you look ''smart" or "right". So its almost rigged for me to have a view.

Okay, some people, somewhere have problems with the everyday definition of "mafia".

"some people"

hahaha. Always a sport.

The fact is, no matter what I would post, you would be back here with some book quotes or links, or god knows what. There is no way to be right around you because you are so obsessed with your damn image.

I might as well just admit to being wrong if I am right or wrong, to save future wasted time.
I never thought I'd see the day when I have to be SO specific on such a simple thing. Honestly, I really dont think its me.

I like mafia movies like the Goodfather and Scarface, and tv-series
like Sopranos.
I dont see these movies romantisasing(im from sweden, I don´t care
how you spell that!:D) the mafia life. Most of them
show a mafia lifestyle as being awful. You commit crimes to get rich.
People who find that rommantic have problems. These people are
probably the same that go out and do violent acts after seeing any
ordinary action movie to?!
I think gangster rappers are the main romantizajzeeers of violence
and gang mafia methods. Not saying you shouldnt rap the way they
do :D.
I think what it comes down to is easaly affected people who join the mafia
only seeing the good side of it. As allways noone is born a criminal and it starts
in your early teens and bla bla bla...

About the triads financing some HK movies, I believe that to be true, having read that somewhere before. Why would that be so hard to believe anyway? Mafia all over the world own companies involved in all kinds of buisness.
