Gun safety presenter shoots self

Saturday, May 1, 2004 Posted: 12:11 PM EDT (1611 GMT)

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) -- A federal drug agent shot himself in the leg during a gun safety presentation to children in what police describe as an accident. His bosses, however, are still investigating the incident.

The Drug Enforcement Administration agent, whose name was not released, was speaking April 9 to about 50 adults and students organized by the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association, witnesses and police said.

He drew his .40-caliber duty weapon and removed the magazine, according to the police report. He then pulled back the slide and asked an audience member to look inside the gun and confirm it wasn't loaded.

Witnesses said when the agent released the slide, one shot fired into the top of his left thigh. The gun was pointed at the floor.

The agent was treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center and returned to work, a DEA official said.

Give him a can of mace and make him a mall cop or something.

Yeah, I heard about this before Jeopardy by the local news. Everybody in the family room just started cracking up when they heard that gun safety was being shown and he ended up shooting himself.

This reminds me of a funny yet extremely surreal incident back in high school. One day during 9th grade health class we had a special presentation given by someone from the local PD through DARE. He spoke to us about the dangers of going near drugs, damage they can do to your body...standard Health Education stuff.

About halfway through the presentation he opens these cases filled with various examples of drug/smoking paraphenelia pipes, bowels, a small bong and other similar objects, stuff that they've confiscated at the different high schools over the years. This is where the story gets funny, he passes a few of the objects around the room so we can see them closer, while giving the threat that if anything goes missing he'd find it and throw the druggie who snatched it in jail.

They all eventually return to him without incident except there's one problem, while accounting for the items he handed out he noticed there was an extra item. An extra smoking bowl, someone had actually taken their bowl and passed it around the class with the items the officer had handed out. He freaked, the school administrators kept us from leaving the class and basically took us out of the room one at a time.

After about three hours of this they just kind of dropped it and left us with an extremely stern warning . From what I can tell they eventually decided it wasn't worth persuing, since nobody confessed and due to the circumstances virtually everyone's finger prints were on the item.

Some stoner was so proud of his bong that he didn't realize that he'd be losing it for good by passing it around ...... :tickled: :tickled:

Just for clarification, no it wasn't mine and it was definitely one of the strangest situations I've ever been in. :make_fac:

When I was in high school our drivers ed teacher ran a red light and hit a pedestrian on his way to school one morning.
I was afraid I was going to fail because I never ran over anyone. :shame:

I love ironic humor...this cracked me up, too. Sure, on one level it's not a laughing matter that someone got shot, any more than when the McDonalds guy got a heart attack, or if a Benihana chef got stabbed or the head of a brewery got run over by a drunk driver or something... but as long as it's already happened, you might as well appreciate it.

As long as he shot himself, and not one of the kids. That would not have been funny at all.

Yeah, I'm a pretty bitter and unforgiving bastard when it comes to shit like that myself - I just find it a little frightening to know that there are whole groups of weirdo fucks like me :loco:.
