An Explanation
Please understand,
It wasn't just your sig (it was at least four different sigs). Actually it was the result of a proliferation of sigs that started to press what was tolerable outside of the War Room.
--------------
Overarching, Guiding Thought:
Having the War Room gives all members a spot to do a whole lot more than they would normally be permitted in the regular forums, and it gives the rest of the members some assurance of what they won't find outside of the War Room.
--------------
Outside fo the War Room, certain material can get really annoying -especially since this forun is read from a lot of different locations.
This boils down to: while a segment of users check the web exclusively from home, there's a sizable minority that only check from work and school and they're the ones that are the most effected (personally, I use both). For these people, its nice to know what areas of the forums are "safe" and which are "unsafe". Its easier to explain why you're surfing the net when its' just "text" rather than risque pictures (that seldom have anything to do with the website).
Again, people can do whatever they want in the War Room (within reason) -its not good when the war room bleeds out into the main forums.
So:
Is there a hard and fast rule for the appropriateness of pictures in sigs?
No.
Why were these sigs picked out?
While there's tolerance for scantily clad women, outside the War Room, in threads marked as such and to a lesser extent in sigs, these sigs started to cross a line where it became problematic for some people to surf the site comfortably.
Premptive Answers to Inevitable Comments (not necessarly from FormlessOne):
C: "Sigs are our right, you can't take it away, blah-blah-blah"
A: This is a private website, you choose to be here. We try to be accomodating, but its impossible to allow everyone to do what they want. This was a judgment call to try and max out who can enjoy the site.
C: "Why don't you just make people turn off their ability to see sigs."
A: Since some people lurk without logging in they're likely to stumble upon them. Besides, this is making people do something to counteract what a handful of individuals are doing, it's not logical.
C: "What do have against women?"
A: Nothing, if it were over-the-top images of men, they'd be axed too.
C: "How do I know if my pic is okay or not?"
A: First of all, why on earth do some of you really need to post pictures like that in your signature? You can post stuff in the War Room or, if its not too out there, make it in Unrelated. It's those signatures that are floating around everywhere (regardless of topic) that are a problem. To answer the question, think about whether or not people will be happy to see it in the Tech forum or wherever. If you think its pushing it, don't be surprised to see it removed.
[Personally, I'd do away with sigs altogether or limit them to text only -even then you know we'd have some jackass making ascii pictures of ridiculous things just to be "ghey"]
Again, I personally apologize if this upsets some people, but I think the idea is sound for the whole of the site (especially considering there's ready alternatives for people: the War Room and/or other threads).
We really hope the whole of members will be cool with this -We strongly assume you're not here for that stuff (and if you are you'll use the areas we've designated).
