I'm getting a high speed connection in about a week. I wanted to see JUST how far behind the times I am....I have been convinced that at least %50 of internet users are on the ole standby 56k modem connection....but anymore, it seems like I'm the outKast....I want to see how our forum members are hooked up and do a comparison....

I think a lot more people use 56k than most internet users imagine. Its hard for me to gauge that since I live in an affluent neighborhood thats had a high speed connection since mid 1996. I can't even remember what its like to use dial-up anymore.

You know what...it might not be accurate to gauge at a video game forum...I would think gamers would be more apt to have a high speed connection....I expect the results here to be in favor of the High Speed.

I've had DSL since the summer of 02, so its almost two years now and I have to say, its hard to go back to the 56K. Whenever I go to a friend's home who doesnt have high speed, its like a step back in time :make_fac:

Ok this is how its been for me for the past 7 years I had 56k from 1997 to 2004. Now just 1 month ago I got high-speed. :D I cant believe on how much faster it is and how much stuff I can get done quicker then dial-up. Big difference but another reason was I live in a town and they didnt have high-speed till now. Its about friggin time but I was so used to dial-up for the longest time. Congrats to me! Congrats to you! :)

You fucking serious? How fast exactly?

I got T1 at my boarding school. A really, really shitty T1.

He didn't go into detail really, but he said that the signal has already been upgraded in DC and that MA should see it during the summer sometime. I have to go back there and get my phone bill straightend out so I can see if he can give me anymore info and I'll hit you up with a PM.

very true. Us geeks shudder at the thought of a dial-up connection. I was so aggravated one time when I visited my parents and had to use their dial-up, that I harrassed them for like 3 months until they finally got dsl. I'm sorry mama, I never meant to hurt yooooouuuuuu ..... :tickled: :tickled:

Anyway, I got dsl when I was living in los angeles and haven't been able to live without it since then (that was 2001). I had verizon dsl for awhile while I was living here in nc, but then it crapped out and I got road runner. Best. connection. EVAR!!!

:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

EDIT: 25 to 1 .... holy sheeiiites. Yeah, we're some geeks alright :).

Among my circle of friends, I'm quite unique...

1.) I'm the only one with a NEO GEO.
2.) I'm the only one with dialup 56K

So, since NEO is more important, I save money by stickin with paying $10 a month with Dialup and using the other $$$ for NEO homecarts.

How's about that for dedication?

PS... I friggin REFUSE to give telcom companies any more money if I can help it. They charge too damn much for DSL/Cable. Way overpriced if you ask me. Why should those scum take more of my money because I'm impatient? Naa, paying $10 a month for 56K a second may be a bad deal compared to $60 a month for DSL/Cable for 200/400 K a second but still.

Sadly I am still using the archaic 56K Dial Up way to "Jack In" into Cyberspace... that's going to change very shortly for me as well. Then the real fun begins.

:spock:

You mean 5-6k a second, because that's probably all you're getting.

I have 56k, not by choice though.
funny thing is I'm not that far away from some neighborhoods, but they
still do not provide it for my area,
San Antonio being the home to the telecommunications giant SBC.

Shit Electroman...I thought it was still expensive too...but it's only $35/month for Verizon DSL now!....

Here this is for anyone interested in getting DSL...my buddy at work hooked me up with this link. Dell is offering a $100 rebate if you sign up for Verizon DSL thru their website, plus you get the standard deal of the first month free, along with the next two months at a discount.....BUT THE $100 REBATE OFFER ENDS TODAY!

Here is the link: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/internet?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

No purchase required of any Dell equipment.

Ah Dial Up i forget what that is like. High Speed/Broadband is the only way to go especially if you have more then one computer at your house sharing the internet at the same time. Things got bad when we had 3 people all using our rather shitty 56k connection at the same time. Broadband is a godsend.

I've known people in Canada to have high speed connections sinse 1997. Ever sinse then, I've seen the rapid decline of dial up to the point where I cannot tell you the last time I saw some one use it. Apparently, it's a lot cheaper here as well.

Right now, everyone is getting onto the wireless bandwagon. Again, I'm seeing the amout of computers hooked up to a wireless router is rise rapidly; desktop and laptop. Wires are useless.

At this point, for us Canadians anways, is; are you using wireless?

I prefer my going out with friends to the pub and neo carts to a broadband connection.

Only so much money to go around.
