I never understood this. Whenever I look at old nego geo screenshots, like of samurai showdown and KOF, they graphics are sweet. Was the neo geo ahead of its time? And whats with only like cartoony games ....like I dont see any um more realistic style games for example like super monoco gp for sega genesis, does anyone knwo what i mean?

Not sure I understand what you're getitng at, but when you consider what the first Neo games looked like, and look how the graphics in games evolved over the years, it's pretty remarkable how much headroom the hardware gave the developers, IMO. Of course, the gameplay is what it all about.

The simple answer would be that the Neo Geo has Superior Hardware, and as a result was much more expensive than Genesis/Super Nintendo.

harsh, just harsh d00d :p

The NEO GEO is just superior hardware and since the developers have been using it for 14 years, they know the system pretty much inside and out. The NEO GEO is at its limit, I don't think they can do much more graphics wise, but gameplay can always be improved.

I know what your trying to say.

I think the reason Neo Geo graphics look so good is becasue of the art style.

Every thing is just really well drawn and detailed.

I don't think 2D "cartooney" graphics will ever be ugly and its just up to the artists. Neo Geo games have been detailed since day 1 and thats why they have aged well and look really nice today.

Well it was superior hardware. And also the developers that made games for the NeoGeo had great artistic talent. And that they had time to evolve and perfect their 2D skills with the hardware.

In my opinion only one other console rivalled the NeoGeo's 2D games, and that was the Amiga CD32 (released some years later). Ahh sweet Disposable Hero, Alien Breed Tower Assault and Super Stardust :)

GIGA Power + 4096 onscreen colors + great sprite amount + amazing style = Neo-Geo

The biggest SFC/MD games are about 40Mbit big, while the biggest Neo-Geo game is 716Mbit big, and, the SFC/MD cannot handle sprites like the Neo-Geo... and... well, the MD can show 64 onscreen colors, while the SFC can show 256 onscreen colors, there is a great difference.

but the snes had rotation! meh

Seriously , I look/play SamSho1 and think, just how the fuck did they manage to pull this off all that time ago, it just looks .. stunning. everything fits.

Oh, how I was I didn't bother with SF2 when young and stuck to more of it.

sf2 sucks now, completely unplayable, whereas this, still offers depth and joy to moi

I'll agree with you 100%. Samurai Shodown was the reason why I stop hating fighting games back in 1993.

I mean I never liked any of Capcom's fighters for more than 10 minutes. Characters for the most part are uninspiring, many are more "in costume", and are freaks of nature or are boring looking as possible while....

SNK characters all appear in clothing that people of the day would actually wear. Its like oh, Kyo is walking out of a nightclub and boom meets Iori. Round 1, FIGHT!

Imagine Blanka (phreak) or Balrog (boring) walking out of Walmart and duking it out.

I sincerely love and appreciate SNK's art styles for their characters. So many of them are dressed GQ, like they came out of a New York fashion show or something.

But that could just be me.

I know that King of Fighters 2003 is 716 megabits in size but I bet that Samurai Spirits Zero Special is much bigger. As we all know, Samurai Spirits Zero was 708 megs but Samurai Spirits Zero Special has more characters plus some added extras. I am pretty sure that it is bigger than 716 megs. I have been told that the Neo Geo might be able to hit 1,232 megs tops if you know what you are doing. Since Samurai Spirits Zero Special is the last game that is coming out, we will have to check the meg count size for it to see if it is the biggest Neo Geo game. My money is on the fact that it will be at least a 750 meg game.

Well, first of all, realism is BORING. Second of all realism is hard to achieve, even on todays consoles. And Super Monaco GP certainly isn't realistic. Nothing in those days were.

So, instead of attempting "realism", Samurai Shodown games turned to stylism, anime, etc. and as a result looks entertaining even today.

snkp systematically puts 708megs in recent relases. But certainly they are not.

This is true. Metal Slug 5 really isn't 708 megs at all. It is probably 708 megs wiith all that junk code in it but the game is really no more than around 500 megs. SNKP really shouldn't have left all that junk code in the game if they weren't going to use it. Metal Slug 5 is much shorter than Metal Slug 3 which is probably 708 megs. I guess they didn't want people to think that Metal Slug 5 was a smaller game than Metal Slug 3. This is probably why they left the meg count off of Metal Slug 4 which is said to be 553 megs - which it probably is.

Oh yes. Much props to Amiga too. I remember the first time I saw Shadow of the Beast on my Amiga 500... wow! This is coming from playing mostly NES and Sega Mark III games. Ah the memories... the Amiga had some very good arcade ports and for an Ikari Warriors freak like myself, New York Warriors on Amiga had amazing graphics, sound and gameplay (despite the slowdown).

because the Neo ownz j00? :spock:

It's not just a console...the AES was a means of having the arcade in your house...so I would really consider it more of an Arcade then a home console by far
