between the final fight thread in Unreleated Topics and randomly coming across this picture just posted in a News and Rumours thread, it makes me wonder what could have been...

the power was there, even the settings (fighting atop a moving train was excellent), but the gameplay is shite. stiff and thoughtless. I know this is not the first time this has been posted but... WHY GOD!? WHY???

all we needed was a couple of decent side scrollers and neo geo would be set. even with the years that passed when Sengoku 3 was made, it was still fatally flawed (another what could have been - the main characters are incredible - everything else is null).

I just want 1 fukken side scrolling beat 'em up I can get into on the neo geo. The only one I haven't played yet is Robo Army. Its not like I'm holding my breath or anything..

as it stands only ninja combat works for me (and only on the level of nostalgia as I used to think it was beautiful in 1990 when I was 13).

lord have mercy..

yeah, the piss poor selection of scrolling beat em ups on the NEO is sad, but I'm glad they found a niche in 2D fighters and stuck with it...

although a spinoff Fatal Fury scrolling fighter would have been most welcome back in the day...

Let's Go Waaay Back!

I dunno, would Top Hunter be classified as a side-scrolling beat 'em up? It's not as much a platformer as the Metal Slug series, but not really a beat 'em up in the traditional sense, either.

Either way, I'd have loooved to see a sequel for that.

In terms of a side-scrolling beat 'em up that could have been -- or, should have been -- for the Neo·Geo, I think something of that time period, like using the licensing of G.I. Joe or The Real Ghostbusters, would've been a dream come true. I mean, Capcom had Aliens Vs. Predator, Konami had The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Uncanny X-Men, so why couldn't SNK jump on the character franchise bandwagon, too?

I think Robo Army is the neos best side scrolling beat-um up but its not as good as most others. I agree why couldn't they make one stellar game.

SENGOKU 3 MVS worth buying??

Hi all:

What was best about SENGOKU 3 (I personally love SENGOKU 1)? Gameplay, music, controls?

An official Beats of Rage would have been cool as all hell, although I've never played the PC version. Does anybody know if you can execute the characters' moves as you would in a fighting game, or is it just a standard beat 'em up with KOF characters? Either way, they could've made a side scroller/fighter hybrid, no problem...would've sold like hotcakes.

sorry, I should have been clearer, but basically when I say:

- I'm talking specifically about Burning Fight. If you look at the stills and had never played the game before it looks completly excellent.

I totally agree w/ you. The music and atmosphere of part 1 make it the best sengoku for me at least.

Sengoku 3 may have combos and special moves, but the stages and enemies in 3 are quite bland imho.

On a total tangent but, I was watching a friend play "In the Hunt" a while ago and was totally thinking this game should have been a neo title. Pretty good shooter and a graphic style that is totally metal slug.

I would say that if Sengoku 3 would have actually been made as a sengoku game (morphing characters, multiple weapons and a little more of a japanese them) and a few more enemies were added to the mix it would have been the definitive sidescroller for the neo.
as it stands sengoku 1 and 2 do it for me.

well i think burning fight is almost as complete as a 2d beat em up gets. NOt on the level of dungeons and dragons or Streets of RAGe 2 but its a very nice game
