Factor 5 forgoes GameCube development

But the Rogue Squadron III studio says it is "excited" about Nintendo's upcoming consoles.
For the second time in as many days, a GameCube-exclusive studio has revealed it is developing games for other consoles. Yesterday, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes creator Silicon Knights announced the end of its second-party deal with Nintendo, but stressed it was still on good terms with the publisher.

Today, similar noises could be heard emanating from the offices of San Rafael, CA-based Factor 5. Word leaked today that the creator of the Rogue Squadron series--the GameCube's premiere Star Wars franchise--had ceased development for the console. Even though Factor 5 was technically not second-party developer--"We've never been a Nintendo shop," president Julian Eggebrecht told GameSpot--the studio was perceived as such. Its last non-Nintendo game was 1999's Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D for the PC.

However, Eggebrecht was quick to dispel any "doom" that might surround Factor 5's announcement. Echoing Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack, he emphasized his enthusiasm for Nintendo's future console efforts. "We are extremely excited about both DS and GCNext, so any talk of us abandoning Nintendo platforms altogether is just not true," he told GameSpot.

According to Eggebrecht, the only reason Factor 5 has stopped making GameCube games was that they've abandoned current-generation hardware altogether. "It is simply because we have moved into next-generation development," he said.

As for which future console Factor 5 was creating games for, Eggebrecht was unspecific, saying only "there might be a surprise [announcement] coming from us."

Let me just get my hands on Unity and I'd be happy... been waiting for that game for years now.

I smell an early death for the GC
It's been on life support for a year now. It's the second coming of the N64.

Nintendo has really fucked up, royally, twice in a row. Perhaps with the third strike it'll be out of hardware and into software only?

I really like Nintendo's games, honestly. I hate their "let's fumble around in the dark like blind and deaf retards and hope we find what we're looking for" business practice. They may have had what it took to be the leader 10-15 yrs ago, but once Sega came in with the MD/Genesis, their empire begane to crumble. Hell, the SNES barely beat the Genesis in terms of systems sold through in the end of it's life, and mostly because Sega abandoned it for the Saturn and Nintendo HAD to make the SNES live long enough for them to bring out another system.

The thought of the DS scares me. It just SMELLS like another Virtual Boy failure. I remember all the hype for the VB, and it's the SAME hype they are shovelling for the DS. If it looks like shit, feels like shit and smells like shit, it more than likely IS shit.

Unless they decide to focus on the DS, and with how stupid their business practices have been in the last couple of years, that wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Of course, one thing they've learned the can count on is hand held. Maybe my fears are unfounded.

True, didnt they claim like 50 titles for DS or something?

Too much in the air...to me it just could be another Virtual Boy..but then again..who knows? They always claim a certain amount...but you will only see like 10 or so upon release..then each month you get maybe 3-4 more (Much like any systems release)

GCNEXT sounds stillborn to me. its sad that when it came to 8 bit and 16 bit technology the systems where milked to the limits of their capacity - companies would teach an old dog new tricks so to speak. Nowadays, you have Dreamcast (was playing Jet Set Radio today and there is very little out there that can challenge it stylewise today) falling of the edge way before it was maxed, and the current systems are hardly being pushed. Maybe only RE4 stands to show what its all about.
How sad 128 bit gaming is... 32 bit Gaming was way more fun (dman that would make for a nice poll question).

gcnext will be big Ns Dreamcast, a last goodbye in the non-portable hardware market.

the DS sounds excellent to me. And even if the Virtual Boy was fundamentally flawed and sold poorly, it is still a work of genuis.
Ds , if they pull of the dual screen thing -will have games you will not be able to get for the PSP due to format, but the reverse isn't necesarily true. Anyway they sound about as powerful as each other.

Meh .... Factor 5?

Big deal. Rogue Squadron 3 was the biggest turd I've played in quite some time. Rogue Squadron 2 was really cool, but that last one was just total shyte. The flying missions weren't as good, and the ground missions (3rd person) were just totally horrendous.

Nintendo doesn't need them - this is just another over-exaggerated loss.

Just give me RE4 and Metroid Prime

and Kid A keeps drooling over Giest for some reason, I may give that a whirl too.

And I don't think the next system will be Nintendo's Dreamcast, mainly because Nintendo is still dillusional about their status among current gamers.

At least Sega knew they had to push hard to try to appeal to their old fans and fans they've betrayed.

Same here - that last Rogue Squadron game was a steaming gorilla turd that the cube would've been better off without.

Factor 5 that name sounds familiar.

Didn't they develop Super/Mega Turrican?
