This is just an idea that I've been thinking about but given that shock boxes are getting kind of expensive and hard to find in large numbers. I've wondering about the possibility of something like these thats aimed more at the mvs gamers than the collectors.

I guess I'm posting this to test community receptiveness towards simple NES style dust covers. Shock boxes are great and I love the inserts people print up but I'm also fond of the more stripped down and "raw" asthetic that seems to fit so well with the mvs. They would probably be alot cheaper to make and overall a little more practical than Shock Boxes. Just really a simple black plastic sleeve to protect loose carts from dust and with some variation of the Neo-Geo logo stamped on it in red or white.

edit: found a better picture

Well, as cool as that would be - if you look closely on
that NES sleeve, it's starting to come apart - which is
bad.

P.S. Cool idea though

That's just a picture of the old-style sleeves I googled for, no clue who those actually belong to. I don't have any problems with the ones I actually own and that's pretty good for 16 years I guess.

It'd be cool, I like shockboxes but that looks like a NICE cheap alternative. I'd consider it definately.

Hmm..I thought about that once having a NES type sleeve to put loose MVS carts in..

That would be one big sleeve though..:D

I like this idea, I suggest the sleeves should have like "NEO GEO MVS" on the side..and down the spine of it "Title of Game" via a custom made sticker

They would be big, but just to protect the bottom of the cart would be an interesting means of making a simple and easier way to have them..plus those sleeves can save up space (wherever you store them) versus the shock boxes. Since it pretty much hugs the carts

I think what you're thinking of is more along the lines of the SNES covers than the NES sleeves.

Those clear plastic cart "plugs" that go on the extreme bottom of the SNES carts?. Those aren't exactly what I had in mind but I really wouldn't object to someone trying their hand at making those either.

However, I think those would actually be more expensive to make than the larger NES style sleeves, considering the need for a more sophisticated mold and the type of plastic that would have to be used to achieve a snug fit versus just slipping mvs carts into what are essentially soft plastic holders.

Thanks for crapping the thread k.thx. The point of the thread was to look at the possibility of cheaper alternatives to the shock boxes, not replace BB's awsome efforts. I'd also be inclined to agree if the supply wasn't drying up and the prices weren't inflating to about $9 per case. It's no longer feasable to round up a ton of them (monetarily or even finding them) to cover the 40+ loose carts someone might have lying around unless another run is made.

Wow, someone's important.

Not all of us are made of money and would prefer to spend what little cash they can spare on games instead of shockboxes. These are a very good idea for those of us who want to protect our carts but don't wanna break the bank doing so.

Grow up little boy.

don't get mad i'm not knocking the effort at all. just stating my opinion. i would learn how to make/buy these if the shockbox wasn't already around.

Your opinion matters to me... j/k.

How about you come up with something better to say than that one brain-celled "shockbox>sleeve" post? How about telling us exactly why you feel that way? Or how about just leaving the thread because it's not like you're gonna contribute anything anyways.

Hmmm...if it were possible, they'd have to be uber-smooth on the inside to avoid scratching the cart itself..but it would b interesting. And maybe even velcro the bottom so that they could stick to a shelf and stay hanging. Woh..my head a whirring w/ ideas. Good thread...alternatives are always interesting.

Dunno about the feasability of adding velcro given the weight of the mvs carts, but yeah smooth plastic would be a given. The rough texture was only on the outside of the old NES cases.

Someone linked to another board where they'd posted pictures of an interesting sort of 'Envelope' style case that they'd done.

If I could find some thin plastic, I could probably make one of these for under 1$, and in less than an hour.

it looked like he'd used cardboard, and just folded a box that closed with velcro.

I wouldn't want to use anything that flimsy, but I really liked the idea, and the finished product looked really good too.

If I get around to making one out of plastic, I'll post directions.

Sounds like a good idea to me. :D I would be interested. I am surprised that nobody has just had a huge lot of shockboxes (boot shockboxes ;) ) made. Doesn't seem like it would be that big of a deal to get done, maybe I am way wrong though. Probably have to know the right people.

Actually its pretty strong! Super strong and solid. I know i couldnt belive it myself when i built my first one (Prototype). It was a tad small and the cart was big time stuck inside the box.. I had to use everything i had to get it out.. I inserted it and yanked it out 6 times in disbelief. It was really wedged in there cause of the inner foam layering. The box was fine and so was the cart..

I would'nt of posted a " How 2" if it wasnt sound ;)

Even if ya could make one of those Nes sleaves.. it would scratch the cart i'd bet and heh a nes sleave is pretty flimsy i'd say.

Yes they'd be flimsy black plastic covers that would provide no structural support, they'd slip around your gamers condition carts to protect the insides from dust and extend their life, and they'd be extremely cheap.

Basically as awsome as your efforts are.... you're still dressing up MVS carts like they're AES carts and not really what I'm interested in. Just a cheap way to protect them before I stack them back up on top of my cabinet, except this time the contacts would stay clean.
