Polygon Magazine is DEAD

I was a subscriber to this mag and over the weekend, I got a letter from the publisher(s) informing me that as of March 22, 2004, Polygon Magazine would cease publishing.

Great, just great. Another mag with potential bites the dust. Guess I'll just stick to my OXM subscription and let the mainstreamers have their EGM.

Oh, and no word on a refund for the remainder of my unfulfilled subscription. R.I.P. :oh_no:

Play is better....

To be honest, both mags need LOTS of work. Play's reviews are far too generous and they have far too much anime coverage. Polygon's reviews needed more substance and a better rating system, but improvements were evident over the few issues that I read.

And my dumb ass just subscribed to Play for two years - yeah, like I'll ever see that through to completion.

Just out of curiosity, I've never had a subscription with a mag that folded halfway through my subscription period. Is the publisher responsible for refunding subscribers for the unfulfilled portion of the subscription? Or am I out of luck?

The subscription will usually get finished up with another magazine from the same parent company.

Good question - I'm not sure whether the've got any legal obligation to compensate you for the missed issues or not. It's probably a small amount, so I'm thinking you may be out of luck.

I'm really not sure though.

I'm not surprised. Apparently it's really hard to survive in the
mag market.

Someone should start a weekly mag in the US. Something like Famitsu could do very well indeed.

The only gaming magazine I can stand these days is Edge. Articles and columns are alot more interesting than the crappy reviews that make up 90% of your typical magazine.

I like Play magazine.

They had an awesome article a few months back about the new Capcom comics coming out. (I still haven't seen them yet though).

True about Play being ridiculously generous with reviews (they gave Hulk and Matrix) a favorable review. But even so, with Polygon biting it, they are all we got in terms of real gaming journalism.

In case anyone hasn't heard of it, Insert Credit in an incredible gaming site. With the latest news on the neo, other arcade games, dojin games, anything cool from Japan, and hentai games. Since it is becoming quite clear that we will never have a great gaming magazine (R.I.P. GameGo *sob*), we will have to be content with great gaming sites.

Also, Rajin comics, a U.S. Manga publication recently passed on. They sent me a full refund for the rest of my issues. But I do not know if they were legally obligated to do so.

Sad about Polygon. I am sure the smart staffers disagreed with the direction of the magazine after it transitioned from Silicon to Polygon and left.

That said, it's still sad.

Hmm...looks like someone wasn't doing their job in the marketing department, getting corporate sponsors and advertisers to keep the mag afloat. I wonder who that would be?

THat might be. Had I worked at that publication, I wold have left 6-7 months ago when it was obvious that the business modelwas deeply flawed.

fuck the internet. print is so much better it isnt even funny.

1. the internet will NEVER replace books/novels. people just dont want to fucking deal with it. plus reading a lot of shit off a monitor sux ass. reading your own printed copies also blows.

2. mags die these days cuz they suck. if something like GAMEFAN was still around i would subscribe in a second even though i dont have any money.

You guys should look into Manci games http://www.mancigames.com/

It's a new retro mag. The first issue is already out and there are some threads about it in News and Rumors. I know someone who works on it and from what I've heard it's been well recieved so far.

Meh. There are people out there who detest Sony consoles.

Truer words have never been spoken, but I fail to find a better mainstream mag on the market.

I usually subtract a letter grade from all of their reviews and it works out.

Also the writing and layout quality of Play far suprasses that of any other current gaming magazine.

There isn't enough "Crap Games" to cover on a weekly basis, unless gamers really want a play by play of each bug found in the play testing area of a game, or when the Concept Designer/Project Coordinator needs to take a rowdy "I was at Taco Hell last night" shit. *With what happened to RAIJIN COMICS here in the USA on a weekly basis of Manga & Anime coverage and it just bombed :( I don't think many would keep a "Weekly" magazine on games alive at all. It be dead within a few months to half a year just like RAIJIN. Face it guys, the world as most of us remember it came to an end already, we just don't have the sense to lay down and die is all.

Uh-oh, does that mean all these video gamers are going to get a half-subscription to Vibe or something?

Dear Polygon Subsriber,

Sorry we had to can that red-ink-laden video game magazine, please accept the refund in the form of a subscription to Women's Home Journal. Under your subscription agreement, which you obviously read in full, we have the right to subscribe you to whatever magazine we want when your initial magazine goes bust. So enjoy the Home Journaling, you lady-like bitch.

Sincerely,
Mega-Publishing Corp.
