Neo carts and CDs - an idea

I have an idea which could turn into a cool and useful web site/page.

Very often, I see threads like "cart vs CD". Ppl keep asking about the differences between cart and CD versions of Neo games. We know by now that there *are* differences, but most of us (me included) don't know them all.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a nice HTML table, with a cross-reference of all available NeoCD games and their differences to their cart counterparts?

For example, I know that there's less zooming in AOF3, missing objects in SS4, arranged STs in Soccer Brawl, some cuts in LB, but that's about it...

The table could include the loading times of the games as well, so that it could turn into a useful ressource to decide which version to get - if the CD version of a game you want has no cuts, features great ASTs, and has bearable loading times, it may be a good (and cheap) alternative to a cart.

What do you think?

I think that would be a great idea, I'm interested in the differences myself.

WoW what a good idea. I have also been wondering what *ALL* the differences are between cart vs. cd. It would be very interesting 2 see a complete list/table comparison.

Thanks for your opinions so far.

I would really like to see such a ressource, would be a great info base for SNK's CD consoles.

ORPHEUS, good to hear that you're thinking about to put some CD infos online as well! I have some drafts of a NeoCD/cart web site on my PC, but they're very raw and incomplete. It takes a helluva lot of time to create a good layout, not to mention a useful content...

I figured the comparison chart could include:

Game title US/JAP, year of release, meg count cart, meg count CD, genre, CD-exclusive, # of players, OST/AST, number of music tracks, titles of music tracks (a tough one), load times (some), differences/cuts compared to the cart version, current av. price (mint).

The table could be completed with a link to a ressource page for every game, with more links to reviews, screenshots, etc.

Really a mammoth job!

I don't have many carts (15 AES), but I have most of the CD versions of these carts as well (sans KoF2k and MS3 of course), so I will start assembling some data :)

If anyone is interested in the results, I could either post them here (will take some time, tho), or you could drop a few lines of mail to takumaji@lupa.de

Good to see some interest in this. I know the CD isn't very popular, but I think such a site could be worth it.

Wolferaizer, the site isn't finished yet, there are some more things to do to get it on the road, but I would be happy about every helping hand!

Let's see - OPRHEUS seems to work on a site as well, so we should join forces and create the ULTIMATE NEOCD RESSOURCE! :D

Thanks for your offer!

Right now, I have the following stuff:

- load times of about 25 CDs
- some 20something cover scans
- reviews of CD-exclusive games
- comparisons between 6 CD/cart games
- lots of web ressources (links) for Neo games
- a soundtracklist of about 30 CDs, tho mostly without titles

Anything you can come up with is welcome - scans, reviews, screenshots, OST/AST lists.

I will compile an exact list of the things I already have and post it in this thread.

Currently, I'm thinking back and forth about a name for the site. Here are three of my favs:

<a href="http://www.ne-o-rama.de/.com" target="_blank">www.ne-o-rama.de/.com</a>
<a href="http://www.neocd.de/.com" target="_blank">www.neocd.de/.com</a>
<a href="http://www.neocdemporium.de/.com" target="_blank">www.neocdemporium.de/.com</a>

All of them are still available.

Meanwhile, here's a link to <a href="http://www.lupa.de/list.html" target="_blank">a list of my Neo games</a> for which I will compile a data chart. Any contributions welcome!

I only play AES and MVS...I don´t like these CD-Neo, but i think it´s ok. You´ll get good games for cheap, but nearly all of them miss some details... :D
So i´ve to go back to my AES!!!

Sounds like a great idea, Takumaji. Just make sure that NeoGeocd.com doesn't beat you to it.

Speaking of ideas, I had this crazy dream about a Neo-Geo AES console that had a CD-ROM drive in the middle. With it, you could play the game's arranged soundtrack over the original one. But, like I said, it was all just a dream...

i think it'd be the coolest thing ever if they had a system that played aes, mvs also, and had a cd drive to play neo cd games, that'd take care of everybodys neo needs. i'd pay good money for one too

insaneben, I don't think neogeocd.com taps into my flow. He doesn't seem very active lately. I've sent lots of load time charts to him, but so far he hasn't put them on his site, although it would be just a cut-and-paste job... perhaps he noticed how time-consuming it can be to run a real good web site with up-to-date content.

Yeah, a home cart console with a cd-addon would have been great. Some games' CD OSTs are much better than the original tracks, and I love it to put my NeoCDs into my CD player for some great music.

Chriz, I hear ya well. I started with my AES in the early 90s, but soon my money ran out to buy new carts, so I was very happy about the release of the Neo CD console.

The fact that nearly all of the CD versions lack some details is what interests me most. My CD/AES comparison chart will cover these differences, so if you know some of them, mail them to me or post it here. Thanks!

ragnagard it has of the differences in the presentation, is the only
game that has a presentation animated better than on cartridge,
however in the presentation on cd lack the crashs between some
personages

in ART OF FIGHTING 3 the dimensions of the personages have been
reduced of 30%

moreover some particular to the beginning of the round have been
removed

like the lamp that fall in the stage of Sinclair, and the books
that fall in the left angle in the stasseo stage if it is hit against
the wall

or the powder in the stage of Roddy

or still the cat in the stage of Kasumi that on cd not is

in real bout it has been removed the scene in which the firemen they
extinguish the fire in bridge stage in the case the skillful angle
comes destroyed, moreover the written one " continuous " is designed
in figures on the cartridge, on cd is various

in the options of the cartridge there are of the particular that they
slide on the background

KABUKI KLASH has many graphical losses (much similar to those of
METAL SLUG) is many objects that lack in the backgrounds...

like some corals or other objects that can be hit and be destroyed
during the game

in SAMURAI SPIRITS 4 there are particular lacking...

in the stage the sea, a large one lacks rock where the waves of the
sea break up
