Neo Geo CD Front Loader language switch?

'ello all,

I am hoping this isn't against any of the board rules, if so I missed it and apologize...and will understand if this has to be deleted.

I was trying to have a Language Switch put into my Neo Geo CD, so I could actually play games in English for a change, but the people doing it say that it's not like the other CD units(the top loader, the CDZ) so they can't use the walkthrough here:

http://www.nickthfury.com/neogeo/cdmods.htm

Is that true? They are now saying they have to see if there is a way to actually wire to bios to allow for the switch. I've not heard of any of this before...and was wondering if anyone had any info on a guide that I could provide them.

If anyone has any info, it would be most appreciated. :)

Thanks,

Bel

You mean you actually want to cut up a front loader? Shame on you. Get back in your cupboard.

Most every Neo CDs will allow you to switch between Japanese and English. Check the options menu. Note, the speech might still be in Japanese, but the text will be in English.

Don't molest your front loader...those are hard to find!

Hmmmmm, must be some hidden option that I am missing. I have about 16 CD games so far, and out of those, only around 4 to 6 of them have that option. :(

The option is not hidden. It is either there or it is not. Not every game will allow you to do this. It doesn't really bother me all that much.

I just hate to play every game in Japanese, not to mention for games like Crossed Swords 2, it's actually kinda tough. ;)

I will see how it goes, but I guess if they are not able to mod it I can just sell it off for a CDZ or the top loader. :)

If I'm not mistaken Crossed Swords 2 was a Jap only release. The game is exclusive to the CD systems. If I had a front loader I would not sell it or mod it...the front loader had a very low production run and it is difficult to find them here in the US.

Correct, Crossed Swords 2 is a Japanese only release, but will convert to English if you have a language swith(or a US Neo CD unit).

It's not that I don't like the front loader, but with the top loader being so much easier to mod with a language switch, or the CDZ just being a better system in general, it's hard to justify keeping the original just because it's so hard to find. That may just be me though... :)

Yeah, actually, I came across that at some point, but thanks for the reminder(and the links). :) $325 for the CDZ, from what I hear, isn't a bad price...is it? I've not really shopped around too much...just heard that they can sometimes go for as much as $500+ or something insane like that. BTW, that "twice the speed" comment is just a bit off...;)

The CD top loader is just so sexy, even if it is the same thing as the front loader and all. ;)

Yes those are good deals! I'm happy with my NOS Neo CD. I'd say save your money... don't get the CDZ. Use the difference in price to buy some games :).

My Neo CD top loader only cost $99 with 3 games from this board, sell that front loader and with the money you'll make you'll be laughing :)

My main concern about the top loader and CDZ are the constant things I keep hearing about their reliability. Some FAQ I read stated that a good Neo CDZ wouldn't last but 3 years...and that the top loaders seem to have even more issues than the front loader(which I find hard to believe...not because the front loader is bad hardware, but that the top loader is basically updated hardware).

Anyone else hear anything like that? Also, what are ya'll's experiences with the top loaders, and more importantly(to me) the CDZ?

Yeah, I just can't swing the AES carts...just too much money for me. :( No big deal though, I am happy with my Neo CD...I just want to play the games in English. :)

Makes me wonder what's up with the Neo CDZ hardware...if they took some shortcuts, or that beefed up cache is really recking it...

Update:
Well, they couldn't do it. No language switch on the front loader CD system for me. :( Most likely going to sell it, along with a few games...see if I can scrape up enough cash for a top loader or maybe even that CDZ package here in the store.

I need to get somemore info on the CDZ...I keep hearing conflicting reports of some saying it's been reliable and they've had it for years...and others saying it dies pretty quickly...
