I've typed up a the two interviews in last months Edge Magazine. They're a pretty good read.

I'm getting an arcade news website off the ground as well so I'd be much obliged if you'd register too (no e-mail activation required). :D

I read a few of your threads there. Great stuff. Thanks.
there is still a chance that the AW could fail outright. Sammy and all of thier 3rd parties better stay on the ball or it's thier ass.

I certainly find their strategy for Sega and arcade gaming in general very encouraging. They're going for very low cost gaming and trying to get the machines into cinemas, malls and take aways.

Trying to compete with consoles is silly. When you're waiting for a pizza you can't play your playstation. You also don't have other players to interact with when you're at home. It's like going to the cinema vs renting a video. Some people prefer to stay at home but if you hit the right pricepoint they'll also come out because of the social element.

Yeah, thanks for the link and for giving us access to these interviews. I agree that the Pizza parlors and bowling alleys are sort of an untapped market right now. Will that be enough to really make a difference with arcade games slowly dropping out of existence here in the states? I don't know.

Heh about the pizza parlors and bowling alleys and putting arcade cabs in them for patrons to pass the time....

Isn't that how arcades started in the first place? Would be a funny thing indeed for history to repeat itself.

After all, Nolan Bushnell put his Pong game on a Magnavox in a pool bar in the late 70's... and soon after that he couldn't make enough Pong boxes to meet demand.

Bars and Pizza places is the reason that a beat up converted Galaga cab fetches $500+

IT still makes lots of money for a bar or pizza place.....

Guys, keep in mind that the strategy that Molloy is emphasizing above is for the european market. coin op games in bars, pizzarias, etc are already common place here in the states.

I dunno about bars so much, and pizzerias at least where I live don't seem to have that many arcade machines, well old shitty ones if they do. Atomiswave would be welcomed with open arms I would think.

just a question which i have been curious of, would the Atomiswave be capable of churning out graphics/animation on par with SF III third strike?? I mean it is quite powerful for something 2d wise. 3d wise, based on the games i have seen, well, its not the hardware you would like Virtua Fighter 5 to come out on :eek_2:

IIRC, someone in a board said the only think the CPS3 is better than the AW is Ram, and that was only used when getting the whole game from the cd and transferring to the machine.

So... it is supposed to be able to do anything the CPS3 did, and mostly better.

The thing is: do Sammy and SNKP have a staff willing to go to lenghts?

We´ll see.

Well the DC played the CPSIII stuff quite nicely so I guess the AW would also...

I don't know how things are in the US but arcade machines were very common up to 1994 here. There was a very good Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat scene in my small town. Two arcades, 5 machines at the pool hall, and a couple of cabs at most takeaways.

Then Daytona, Sega Rally and Time Crisis came along and the old JAMMA cabinets completely dissapeared. Exciting at the time but 10 years later all I ever see are the same 3 games in every arcade/bowling alley.

Problem with Naomi was again that you needed Net City cabinets. They should have just stuck with JAMMA and made it alot cheaper.

JAMMA saved the arcade industry after the first crash. If they'd just stop faffing about with touchscreens, hydraulics and motion censors and got back to the basics the industry wouldn't be in such a mess.

In all honesty you will probably not see a game like 3rd strike again (graphice wise) the heart of this industry is dying out and companies go for the quikest and easiest buck possible. Passion takes a back seat. games like SF3. MOTW, etc, are works of passion (by thier artists and creators) that serve as a money maker for companies AND a creative outlet for thier staff. The indutry has shunned alot of that to increase revenue.

don't forget that cel shaded 3d is this generation's 2d. 2d represents backwards thinking in the scene these days. It doesn't have anything to do with how pretty the graphics are.

I think with regards to console games you're right but 2d games are still very viable in the arcade industry.

I remember seeing the top 10 highest earning arcade machines last year (in an Edge feature maybe?) and the chart was dominated by 2d games. VF4e and Initial D were the only 3d games in the group.

Nice interview, but there's nothing on Xbox ports of Out Run 2 and Virtua Cop 3. Damn.

Is there anywhere that has any decent coverage on what Xbox plans to do with SNKP and their online stuff. Anyone have any information?
