Whats the best quality / lowest price video card I can get?

My dad FINALLY wants to upgrade the computer.

Right now we have a TNT2.

What is the best thing I can get (able to play the newer games at least) for the smallest amount of money.

What kind of processor and ram do you guys have? It'd be kind of pointless to beef out with an ATI 9800 Pro if you're running an old processor with shitty ram. What are you wanting to do with it?

P3 800 mhz (might upgrade to the 1ghz one) and it can hold up to 512mb ram.

Not the greatest thing ever, but it needs upgradin badly.

Well what are you wanting to do with it? Online gaming that will tax your memory card or what? I know my friend just bought a 256mb ATI XT card and he still got choppy frame rate when he sets his resolution high because his processor can't handle it (and it's like 1.9ghz).

I'd recommend you get at least a p4 2.4ghz processor. An ATI Raedon 4800 Pro 128mb graphics card, and 512mb of ddr ram.

I <3 H.T. processors

Well I would upgrade the processor to a P4...... but well you know, the whole motherboard not working with them is a big thing.

I should be getting my own computer soon, but this is like the family computer and it just needs a little boost.

So I should go for a lower end Radeon and max out the ram?

(well and were getting a bigger hard drive)

I had planned on buying this, but I never did. I was reading some random PC magazine at my school and they mentioned something about newer games requiring "pixel shading" capabilities or something that only the very latest cards were supporting. I'm a complete hardware newbie, but, well, I want to be prepared, I guess. My PC has a 2.13 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. I basically just want to be able to run the newest games at full speed and get the best card I can for under $250. Advice?

I was looking at this, but, as I'm really an idiot when it comes to specifications, so I was wondering if there is something better for the money or if I should just go for the 9600.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800...and you can overclock the cards to run at almost pro status (damn Infenion Ram). So I say go for that. It'll last you a LONG time and you get amazing performace.

I have a 9800 pro with a 1.67ghz processor and 512 ram. Works great for online gaming even with UT2004. Gonna upgrade the ram to a gig soon though.
