Okay.
I'm currently playing Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition on PSX.
Default settings are as follows:
/\ =Evade, roll back
n =Punch
X=Kick
O=Special

While this works well enough on the PSXcontroller, I also have a Naki arcade stick. Even though they share the same default button setup, I'd rather have all the buttons as arcade set as possible. (Especially if I ever wanted to play anyone in Vs.)

So, would I set up the controller (4-buttons across) as PKSE, or do most people choose PSKE? It seems odd having a kick in between what seems to be two essential punch buttons. What's the preferred setup for most players? (i.e. what do you use for Real Bout style gameplay?)

Any info you can provide shall be much appreciated.

Punch -- Kick -- Strong Attack -- Evade.

Basically the same setup as for the Real Bout series (the evade button taking the place of the line-changing sway button -- D). This also helps as most of the combination arts are based on some variation of A (punch)-> B (kick)-> C(strong), again similar to Real Bout.

Hope this helps and enjoy!

It does.
Much appreciated, SouthtownKid. I'd have hated to have learned attacks based on preference and never stand a chance in the arcade with buttons backwards.

I'd had an inkling that the PKSE was the default, but wanted to double-check before finding out that it was something else when I go to play elsewhere.

All I have to adjust to now is fooling my stick into reading those KS inputs like it's supposed to.

(I do this with my MadCatz Dual Force and sometimes get a fake startup animation from Terry. Is this normal? He starts the animation and pulls his fist back, then returns to his standing animation without doing anything, leaving me open to a kick or special while I'm wondering what went wrong.)

Again, thanks for your help.

Don't worry, nothing wrong. You're doing one of the feint moves. The feint of Terry's Power Geyser is down + Kick and Strong. I honestly don't remember how many feints are in Wild Ambition, but in the first Real Bout Terry had them for Burn Knuckle (forward + punch and kick), Power Wave (down + punch and kick), and Power Geyser. Feints are usually either down, forward, or back, and 2 buttons.

You may need to adjust the timing you imput the move slightly, that's all.

Alright, cool....I think.
I've never found fake moves to be really useful, since I usually play the CPU, I don't have any human opponents to psyche out. At least I know there supposed to be there now, kinda' like Ryu's fake Hadouken in SFA3.

Thanks, SouthtownKid. Much appreciated.
