Why does everyone hate the CD-Z?

I am confused

I just got a CD-Z, and the load times really are nearly 2x faster than NeoCD, and it doesn't overheat and ruin CD's? And I would swear it displays animations in games you didn't see on regular NeoCD...

Where did this come from?

I somehow doubt its displaying any more animation than a normal NGCD machine.. its the same data after all.

The only problem I have with it is it doesn't seem very "SNK".I mean, everything else they've ever done is BIG.The other cd machines are basically end-tables,the carts are mammoth, the AES system is huge, and then here comes the CDZ all small and flimsy. You barley tap it and it does a cd-rom error.

Right, I think it's due to the way CDZ is constructed--it's those damn I/O error readings. Not trying to be negative here, but I think if you play the system awhile longer, this kind of error will probably come up. It's fine w/ my CDZ now, but I used to get those I/O readings. W/ bulky CD? No problems.

And, if you have a Neo Geo home/arcade set up w/ decent amount of games, I don't know how much you are going to play that system, which loads about 1 1/2 X faster than cd IMO. It's been over a year, since I touched my CDZ.

I personally don't have any problem with the CD or CDZ.

But i feel you just don't have the same experience playing the cd games compared with the AES or MVS

I'm MVS all the way and since i've got myself a cab i wouldn't want an AES or CD system

You can go and get a cup of tea or coffee with the loading times on Samurai Shodown 2

Sorry dude :) :) :)

The CDZ isn't a bad system, but it *has* intermittend problems with too much heat (specially if you place it on a carpet and let it run for several hours), and it tends to re-boot with some giga-spec games (like the newer KoFs). This is what I (and a friend of mine) experienced over a course of about half a year of CDZ playing.

As a big NeoCD fan I always preferred the standard CD unit. It's slow, but it's also reliable and very affordable, unlike the CDZ and front loader versions, which tend to go up in price.

Take a look at neogeocd.com for some CD/CDZ loading times; the maintainer of this site posts here with the nick neogeocd.com and has asked us to contribute to his site; I have sent him lots of loading time comparison charts for standard CD games, perhaps you can measure some CDZ loading and send it in, would be good to see how much faster the CDZ really is (because most statements concerning loading times are quite subjective)...

Anyway, have fun with your CDZ!

Yes, you already mentioned that several times, Steven.

Perhaps this opinion of yours is a bit over the edge; think of the Saturn or the Dreamcast (yep, here we have GD-ROMs, which is basically the same than CDs), both are wonderful consoles with a wide range of brilliant games, not to mention the lower prices, and the fact that NO cart whatsoever could ever carry as much data as a CD/GD can.

Personally, I'm very, very happy about the NeoCD, and the fact that it offers me the chance to play the greatest 2D games on earth for only a fraction of the AES/MVS cost. And if it takes 1.5 mins to load a game - so mode it be.

Hmm...

I got my MS for $28, my MS2 for $30, payed $12 for Ninja Master's and $40 for Twinkle Star Sprites. All games (except TSS) came in mint condition, complete with manual and spine card.

I don't believe that you will find the games mentioned for these prices on MVS.

I have a Neo Geo CD and it's very reliable, I haven't got any load error problem. Yes, load times are terrible. Thanks for that neogeocd.com link, I'll post my results, as I have games not featured there.

Is there really that much difference between cart and CD? I've just got a supergun to start my MVS experience. I'll check for myself.

Well, there *are* differences between *some* cart and CD versions, but most of them aren't too obvious. For ex., there's less zooming in AOF3 CD, SS4 CD lacks some smaller gfx objects (like the rock in the beach stage), etc. However, the game play is the same.

The CDs often feature arranged soundtracks, which may be better than the original versions, and often some goodies, like art galleries or more play modes (Neo Turf Masters comes to mind).

Aw, you lucky bastard! ;) :D

Combat school is basically a score/time attack thing.. but you can have multiple user accounts and try for each person..

e.g get through the 1st level quickest time

or highest score..

I did 60seconds on level 1 on easy.. dunno if its any good, but I beat the people in the house.
