Anyone here have characters in KOF games that they loved once and then grew to hate, or vice versa? I've got some that really made me think:

USA team's Lucky and Heavy D!: In KOF94, I thought that the whole team was a stupid joke, and I couldn't stand that the whole USA was represnted by these idiots. In 98, however, Lucky and Heavy D! are pretty damn badass now. I still hate Brian, however.

Ramon 2k2. I tried to like this guy when 2k came out, but he sucked. When 2k2 came out, I got the mook and saw just how badass he was. A true pimp.

Robert. Robert is a mixed bag for me. Some years I like him, and some I can't stand him. In 2k3 he's never been more of a total pimp.

Athena. Some years she's awesome and some I can't stand her. Mostly because of how she's drawn.

Terry. God I love Terry Bogard, but I got really sick of him after 98... in 98 he's great, but got stale 99-2k2. Couldn't stand him, but now he's back in his MOTW outfit, and plays better than ever.

These are the biggest ones that I can think of right now. Anyone have the same feelings or am I just crazy?

I agree on the USA Team thing, in 94 they were terrible (just check how Heavy D! walks...), but in 98 they are pretty fun to play and deliver good results to a certain extent. There are 2 reasons why I will always like Heavy D!, first, because of that glitchy SDM combo in which he hits with his back, and second, because I can make a 8hit combo out of cB. Brian is pretty good in 98 as well, but not for competitive play.

I hated Ramon a lot in 2000 as well, but I started using him in 2002, and he is pretty efficient, I like the newer Ramon.

Regarding Robert, same thing here, I hate him in 98, but in 2002 he is just too much, very abusive character. I don't play as him in 2003 too much because he has changed a lot.

I don't play as Terry very much, but his 98 version was the best ever, the dp+P Rising Tackle was so fast and had such a priority... really nice combos. In 2003 he is good, he has gigantic hit boxes, but he isn't as good as in 98.

Iori Yagami, a great character, but his 99 version was SO slow I didn't use him a lot.

Whip, I just love her, but after playing as her in 2001, her other versions are pretty bad.

Kyo Kusanagi, always a great character, but sometimes stronger and sometimes weaker... his 2002 version was great, but I still see his 98 appearance as best.

Some of mine have already been named such as Kyo and Robert, but the one's nobody's named yet

Clark - After 98 he feels so much weaker to me and I just almost can't stand to play him. They gave him that tackle that's blockable, and even if you catch em you can't do a grab because they can break it. It's almost like they overcorrected him.

Takuma - in 2k2 he's been changed so much I just feel like I can't get into him. I know he's still a badass but it's just so much different than he was before.

Best:

Kula - 2002
Athena - 2002
Angel - 2002
Vanessa - 2002
Whip - 2002
Leona - 2002
Ramon - 2002
King - 2003
Robert - 2003

Worst:

Whip - 2003
May Lee - 2001
Robert - 2000
Ramon - 2000
Kim - '99

Usable, but still not as good as usual:

Athena - 2003 (outfit's the best since 2002, though)
Leona - 2003
Mary - 2003

I liked K when he first appeared in KOF, with the flames and the shades, now I find it hard to know what to do with him. Its weird.

A lot of the things I like most in life, are things I started out hating. So it is also with video game characters. I couldn't stand Vanessa and Ramon in KOF 2000 (still not too crazy about Seth, but you never know), and now they are my favorites. The weird thing is, I think I started playing Vanessa in '02 because of her resemblance to RB2's Rick, which is another character I couldn't stand at first, but is now a favorite. I just wish he had a better design.

Once I like a character, I never hate them even if they get ruined. I just try to adapt or move on to another character, I guess. I might hate the game (KOF '99), but...

Haha, I'm close, but not quite, to where you are/were. I started right out of the gates liking Vanessa and Seth, and couldn't get into Ramon for my life. Now, if anything, I've gotten a little tired of Vanessa (stupid redrawn head) but like Seth and Ramon about as much as any other character in the series.

Forgot about Takuma in 2k2. MAN, what were they thinking. Yeah, I still like him, and in a way he's still strong, but his style was just too cool to mess with. Oops, guess not. But, that's Kyokugen (sp) Karate for you. They alll changed styles and moves and stances over the years. Some years for good, others for bad.

2002 Takuma is so fucking retarded. Yet another reason why I hate 2002.

Also... the name Wiegraf rings a bell, for some reason. Didn't you play Graal at some point? Does the name owlshimy ring a bell?

Yep. Takuma sucks big time in 2002.

However, I Think Terry went downhill in 99.
From 98 to 99 with the DP rising tackle moved to a down+up move, Terry lost a lot of his potential.

I agree with Terry going downhill a bit in '99, but on a different level. The rising tackle I had no trouble with. (I'd played enough versions of Terry to be used to the charge. It makes a nice anti-air counter.)

What I didn't like in the transition was the removal of an easy-to-perform Power Dunk. (f, d, d/f +A/C) I think they changed the move to only come off as a chain from another move. Not having that move at all would be preferable to having it only be chained.

98 Terry was the best, his dp+P Rising Tackle was so fast, so easy to perform and has SUCH an amazing priority.

Robert is usually one of my faves, but I hate the way they made him in KOF 2000. He came off as a poor man's Guile with some Kyokugen thrown in.

Robert - Remember back in '97 when you had the game charted most popular characters along with the top scores? Robert was consistently up there with Iori (who was always at the top of the list,) Benimaru, Kyo, etc. After '98, I didn't use him very much and I noticed he wasn't nearly as popular as before with anyone else either, but he's back in top form in 2003 for the many reasons already described.

Takuma - Yeah, it's the same story as with you guys; I couldn't understand why they took away his good moves, then gave him really weird, pointless ones in return. Considering many of the characters are carried over each year with minimal changes, I just don't get why the designers went through the effort of redoing Takuma just so they could make him bad.

Ralf - I played him basically as a 2nd Clark for a long time, then they gave him that charging-across-the-screen move (hcb + B/D) which I liked, then they took it away in 2003 and gave him that ridiculous uppercut and messed up his command grapple. I suppose that was the price to pay for an improved Robert.

Yashiro - I really started focussing on KoF back in '97, so naturally I have to mention Yashiro. I think I played him a total of 3 times back in '97, but in '98 he became a regular pick of mine in both his regular and Orochi fighting stances. Then, in 2002, I stopped liking him again; I'm fickle like that.

Vanessa - I really liked her when she first came out, and then I stopped.

defenitly Ralph,

I really liked him, but the lack of speed and distance in 2k3 has put him on the bench again.

i dont know what the hell yall talkin bout. KOF 98 terry and robert the best?? dont tell me you dont know about kof 97 robert and terry. terry had all these coool combos and juggles after the power charge. in 98 he can only juggle a rising tackle after it. and not to talk about robert. 90%+ combos with super. and he could do more than 60% damage alone without supers or anything. in 98 they where made weaker and in 99 they totally sucked. not to forget 97 Mary, Yamazaki, iori, kyo and a lot of others. in kof 98 moves like dp's on charas like andy and joe where improved but there combo potentials lowered. the same with a lot of others. so it got more balanced. i gues 97 and 98 will always be my personal favorites. 01, 02 and 03 are also good though. (except bc combos 02)

in kof 97 try this easy 60% plus combo with robert. its real easy and you never see it on combovideos for some reason.

jD, sC, hcf+D, j+qcb+DorB, juggle with dp+CorD. voila.

about iori in kof 99. he really sucked in this epo. i favor the kof 97,98 and 01 version of him. think 01 is most fun to play with.

I'll go with The_Chosen_One on this one with Clark. I just have different reasons. Back when he was strong I hated him because T_C_O would hand me my ass with him. But now I kinda like him, because it means I have a chance.... Next up, GORO!!!

I find this odd how they seam to tinker with the game and change how well certian characters play from game to game. Its like there trying to balance the game but don't know how to. Or it might be how the hit detection works with the animations given to the characters in that particular game.

Let's see...
Hinako- sucked in 2000, sucked even worse in 2001, still terrible in '03... wait a second! She was lame to begin with. Never mind.

May Lee was top notch in 2001, but after getting trimmed down in '02, she lost my vote (that, and she stole King's spot on the team! BOOOO!).

BTW- post #1,000,000!! YAY!

Clark: when i first started playing KoF i hated him and was never really any good with him. But after some time i gave him a try and found him to be one of the better characters.

Yamazaki: here is a character i loved to play with almost all of the time and i got to the point were he was one of my if not my best character. then after a while i stoped useing him for about a year your so, Now i suck with him.

Kyo: here is a character i didn't like all that much when i first started using him but the more i started using him the better i got and like Yamazaki became one of my better characters but then like Yamazaki I stop playing as him and now I'm not to good with him.

USA Team: when i first started using them in 98 I thought they were stuped but then it got to the point where if i was going to unlock the art in 98 i would have to use them and the more i started to use them the more i started to like them
