Had you been receiving color using S-video up until now??? If this is your 1st attempt at using S-Video,try another TV or a cable.
This problem has nothing to do with the consolized unit it appears and you most likely have a JROK encoder.

chances are your oscillator is bad. That causes B&W images. Find out what encoder you're using and look for either a crystal or oscillator. Did you build the circuit or buy it?

What Kind of encoder does it have?

I think the problem is probably much more simple. B&W output is a sign that the Chroma (or is it LUMA? i get them mixxed up) is either cut or shorted.

Does the RCA output work? IF so It is definatly a problem with the S-Video connection.

My first solution would be to try a different SVIDEO cable..... I'd say that there is a 50% chance that that will fix your problem....

If that doesn't work and the encoder is a JROK, open up the case and try to connect an SVID cable directly.

I actually got a B&W picture when I first used the JROK in my supergun. I just unplugged the S-Video from the JROK and reinserted it. And the color returned. Haven't had a problem with it since. The plug might just not be in all the way.

Chroma = Color

Is there colour using composite video, if so the problem is probably an open circuit in the chroma feed to the s-vid plug/socket.

If no colour on s-vid or composite probably a reference oscillator problem or maybe pal/ntsc switching issue.

it's also possible that your tv isn't set to s-video or simply not capable of handling s-video.
could also be a PCB issue (output too strong etc), so try with a different one too.

I had trouble with my 2-slot with a JROK when connecting it to my TV through my HT receiver; the screen would 'jump' a tiny bit every three seconds or so. Hooked it directly to the TV, no problem. I also had a bad S-Video cable, which caused a black & white image. I believe it was a short at the chroma connector of the cable, since I could wiggle the cable and get intermittent color. Needless to say, discarded the cable and replaced it, no problems since. I should be getting my second JROK within the next two or three days, which I am going to use in a supergun for the X-Men vs. Street Fighter CPS-2 that is also inbound.
