Someone I know is dumping their PS2 for an XBOX because it no longer reads his games and constantly gets the "Disc read error." He was just gonna throw it out, but me being the dorky engineer that I am, will take it off his hands and see if I can fix it. I know it can be fixed, just not sure how.

Do any of you have any documentation that can help me in this task? Where can I purchase good, but inexpensive parts? Also I would like to be able to mod this PS2 to play both US and JPN games if possible.

Thanks in advance :)

i followed the directions and it took me ten minutes, easy as hell, and i haven't had a problem since. Sony should have that shit on their homepage.

You can also send them back to Sony for a FREE repair. PM Chris1 as he's always ready with the information. No point in taking it apart if you don't have to, right?

That's what a friend of mine did too. All Sony did was change the laser lens ;)

I just went through a similar thing. Took me a while to find a 0 screwdriver though, and it was an eyeglasses one with no grip and was a flat head, so it was tough getting the little ones out.

Other than that my PS2 is on top of things again, Now I dont hate it and want to sell it anymore!

Thank You slerch666 ..

I've sent two PS2 myself to SONY for free repair..both have been opened by me..
+ I've had other PS2s sent to them..

NOTE: now SONY will NOT Repair the systems for free if "opened"..
If the Void Sticker is broken then they will charge you....

I did a repair on my landlords Son's PS2 a few weeks ago..

They brought it to me in pieces,,I mean pieces..he even removed that fine silver wire to the front switches..

The system had gave them a full DISC READ ERROR ..then no power..

I called SONY for the free repair and he said they will no longer take it if it's been opened..I/he would have to pay $103.00 + Shipping..
I wanted to tell the guy to go.....f ..H..S....but I didn't.
I put the PS2 back together..Reset the lens by just pushing it all the way to it's starting position and it worked..it now reads all discs..
It's been working for a few weeks now and it's still working..

Though I think I got lucky since I didn't go through the instructions in the internet site links found to fix the PS2s..
So it may not work for everyone..
..................................................................................
Well I'm usually the person who will say send it to Sony for a Free repair and provide the info..
They used to fix the system if the seal was broken..(For Some Reason)but now they won't and they want $103.00 for the repair without shipping...(Fk That)If Opened/otherwise it's still free.(that I know of)

If/when I have to open a PS2 I cut the seal with a razor where it meets the split in the casing so no void will be present if I had to return the system.
When you put the system back together the seal still looks good..

Here's some Repair info I save for anyone who needs it..

http://www.geocities.com/djyayo/faq4.html Just Watch out for the Pop-ups..

Basically if you do a search on the internet you will find all kinds of repair info now..including scotch tape methods etc.

Otherwise I'd open the system..take off the driver hood/start the system up with NO DISC INSIDE and push the lens on it's track back to it's starting position..
Then put the hood back on..Disc in and reset the system..

You could also try going into Diagnostic in the systems menu
Press the Triangle(Version)
The scroll up to Console -Press Triangle Options and turn on Diagnosis..
Sometimes this will reset the lens.
You can also call Sony and they will walk you through this process to get it right..1-800-345-SONY.or 800-345-7669
(something else that is at some point and link on the internet)

If this system is just not reading discs you can fix it yourself..

..............................................................
(Info I Keep for posting)
Ask The Rep a lot of questions and verify your address with him twice...

check here..

Or I can give you the info for a Free repair from Sony...
I sent them 2 already/must not be modded..

chris1,

Thanks for all the info. I thought SCEA would only cover your PS2 for 90 days, but they do free repairs even after the 90 days? Also, I just want to fix it myself cause:

1) I'm an impatient bastard
2) I want to mod it while I am at it, so I'm going to void any warranty that I may have.

Any good sites about modding your PS2?

No PS2 mod heads out there, or is there just not any PS2 titles worth importing?

The PS2 is a pain in the ass to mod. Unless you have good soldering equipment and a steady handy, I suggest you not do it. But if you do decide to do it, good luck and all the mod chips should have instructions or a URL to where to find pictures to solder the chip to.

Your Welcome..

Yea my 90 days was up when I got the two of them fixed.
But they still fixed them for free..

Fast too.

I've sent them a few other PS2s that belonged to other people and they did the fix for free...As long as it's determined to be "DISC READ ERROR"
And I have had called Sony for people who came here or friends/relatives etc ..setting up the repair details.

The reps were always very helpfull and all of those systems had an unbroken seals plus "DISC READ ERROR" was the problem..

I never had to send them an opened system until I tried it with my Landlords Son's PS2...after my two so I think I got lucky

The Rep will ask you if you attempted the Diagnostic test or he may walk you through it...(No Matter)

............
Now I don't know..
After they didn't take my Landlords Son's broken seal PS2...I haven't had any others to send them.

They may change things.

I ask a lot of questions so I don't get caught up paying for something they state is free..

When I did talk to the rep about fixing (my Landlords Son's) PS2 he was making a work order for a free repair...until I mentioned the broken seal ..that stopped him in his tracks for he said I would be charged $103.00 + )My Shipping) for the repair..
That ended that convo....fast..
Thank goodness I mentioned that I or I may have been charged.

Now back with my two..I mentioned the broken seal but they still gave me free repairs on them..

Maybe it's what rep you get..

PS2

Hey, Despite What Chris 1 says, I have recently had two ps2s repaired for free by sony and both of them had the warranty sticker taken off because I opened them myself.

You just call them up and don't mention the sticker at all, because they won't ask you about it. They repaired both of mine no problem, and they replaced the whole drive, not just the laser as someone had said they do.

Yes, because it's not called a POS 2 for nothing. Basically a SHITLOAD of people have had the same problem and called Sony on the piece trash they built. Being a good corporate entity (yeah right) Sony decided to do the right thing (the right thing to avoid a class action lawsuit they knew they'd lose) and fix it properly. What they were doing BEFORE the free repair was getting you to send your system in, at your own expense for shipping, looking at it, "cleaning it" (more than likely fixing the lense, though calling it just a cleaning) and charging you out the ASS for it. Plus you got to pay shipping to return it to your house. THey tried to pull that shit on me, I told the guy on the phone to suck my balls and took it back to EB and returned it as defective. I love extended warranties on shitty fucked up electronics!

Sweet!!
That's good to know that they will still fix an opened system..

I think the day I got my landlords Son's Broken PS2 and called them I ran into a particular Rep..
I didn't make a second attempt.

He did say to me..
We will fix it for free as long as it's not modded or it hasn't been opened/broken seal.

I didn't say anything about it at that point then I mentioned it later..
(opened/broken seal)
When he mentioned the cost that was it..
I had told my Landlord they could get it fixed for free and now $$$ was the only answer causing me to fix it myself..

I'm glad I fixed it though..The experience of doing it.putting the thing back together was worth it.

Sony didn't charge me on any of the PS2s I sent them to ship them back to me...it was free..

All I paid for was the say $7.00 to ship it to them..

They sent me work orders and a new parts warranty.
The repaired PS2s have new void seals & several stickers on them with my name and a serial number.

They changed the Drivers/lens and sliding door on both Ps2s I sent them..
I don't know why they changed the door/drawers but I wasn't complaining...

I think they upgraded the Driver on one of the PS2s I sent them..
I forget..I have to look at what the work orders say again..

They still work great..though my best friend bought one of them off me and I bought two Gran Turismo combos..that never gave me any problems.

I don't like sending anything to be repaired..I like fixing things myself..

They fixed it fast & I knew what was going on by checking the status of my repair.
I knew when they were being shipped back to me and when they will arrive..
I was very happy with the service they provided..

I say it cost me between $7-10.00 per PS2 repair.
