hello everyone. i am a huge sega fanatic. :buttrock: i have resently bought a few old sega systems, and now i am looking to expand my horizons, backwards, so to speak. i am looking at older systems and games from the past 10 years, and i am the MOST confused by the Neo Geo systems.

i read the glossary on the homepage (wow, btw) and got some info. but there are some unanswered questions:

does the Neo Geo CD have the same games that the home cart version does? is there a difference in quality/quantity of games, aside from the loading times? are the CD games region-locked (as in games are compatible with systems from the same region only) or are they like the GBA games? does the CD system use a memory card also?

and i have a really touchy question that i know will piss off some people, but i am just looking for a straightforward answer:

is it possible to play back-up games on the CD system, or does it have to be modded?

thank you in advance for your time.

All Neo-Geo games got released in CD format up to KOF99. The games are region locked, like with standard Neo-Geo ROM carts, but modding the system to change the region is pretty simple. Regarding memory keeping, the system has a battery, but you really don't need to backup many things.

And yes, you can play backups. But some games crash randomly if they are not original.

I've played a shit-load of back-ups on my CD system with no problems.

I dont think every pre-kof99 game came out on CD, but I do know that there are a few CD exclusive games like Ironclad(which is not that great) and SSpiritsRPG.

There is NO region lockout. The game will play in the language that the system is set in. Any game will run on any system. You can add a switch-mod to select the country you want to boot the system in. SS RPG will only play in Japanese because it was never translated. The operation to accomplish this is one of the easiest console mods next to peeling the tabs off in an SNES.

The games released on the NEO after 95 are generally not arcade perfect. This is true mostly of the fighting games, where animations get cut, and the loads can be excessive. The Neo CD is IDEAL for low meg games, and non-fighters. Metal Slug is REALLLY well done on the Neo CD. MS2 is also good.

Best Perk: Great Music (FF3, especially).

Worst parts: Load times, unreliability of the CD drive in the top loader.

CD is a great novelty, but if you like fighters, investigate the MVS route.

If you want to modd, no chip is needed. Consult www.gamesx.com for details about the operation. All you need is two wires, a soldering gun, and a on/off switch. Make sure you dont get a momentairy.

i have my eye on a CD system at the neo store. where can i buy the chip?

You don't need a modchip, you just cut/solder a couple of things in the system's insides and that is all.

Search the internet for the modification, it's really easy to perform.

There was some Neo CD specific games released. The last game for the Neo CD was KOF99. The Neo CD can output S-video...so the quality should be better than a standard AES. There are no region lockouts. :buttrock: For example I can play Euro and US games on my Jap AES. However, the US and Euro games are in Japanese. The CD system has internal memory.

All the Neo CD systems will read CD-R. From what I gather the CD Z has some difficulties reading CD-R.
If you looking for a system checkout the NeoStore.

the system i want happens to be a CDz lol. well, thanks for all the help guys. i appreciate it.

i remember years ago there was this pool hall near my house and the had only one machine; Samurai Showdown. it was a really neat setup, the machine had a huge screen (i remember it being huge, but then again i was small at the time) with 2 joysticks side by side and seats! i remember my feet barely reached the floor.

this was the closest to an arcade i had close to home, so i got really good at this game. i hope to get the same game experience at home soon :D

Most likely the only place you'll find a new CD system is at the NeoStore. Go with the Z, CD games are cheap. I got my NOS Neo CD from the NeoStore.

Generally. Games like Metal Slug and Ironclad will run you some more money. MS JPN is at around 60, while the US version goes for 100 +.

im not asking about backups to save money. my problem is the same i had with the Sega CD and the Saturn: i want to play the BEST games, and most of the time those arent available.

i dont want to be hoping that some kid breaks his bank and has to sell his stuff on ebay for me to be able to buy and play the good games.

Yeah, but a mint Metal Slug sells for around $2000 to $2500 (AES Ver.). That's why I got a CD system.

Like Rade says above, most games are within standard pricing ranges of highstreet game prices, a few are uncommon and a little pricey, nothing far too outlandish for the standard import gaming enthusiast.

I can't emphisise enough how good some of the soundtracks to games are on CD, it makes the system in my opinion.

Here are your answers...First off

The neo geo cd does have the majority oif the same games as the aes and mvs...even some exclusive games that kick ass like iron clad, unfortunately the price will kick your ass!...

There is not a huige difference in quality oif games aside from loading times. The sountracks on cd games are much better i must say due to the use of a cd rom...also the cd games have extra art gamleries and sound tracks that the aes does not as an incentive....Dont let people influence you too much about the load times, they are not that bad...really some only load one initial time at the beginning....

the cd games are not region blocked, any region game will play on any region system.

the cd system has an internal memory card, it works great and is user friendly...

you can play backups on neo geo cd but i dont know if there needs to be a mod as i would never do such a thiong...maybe to other companies but never snkp or any games that could be bought from shawn and support the site, him and the neo....

sign up on the boards at neogeocd.net or it may be neogeocd.com...
