The Best Neo Geo Shooter

I was wondering which Neo Geo shooter do you consider to be the best on the system. I am only talking about the more traditional type of shooters and not Metal Slug and Shock Troopers since they are really more like an action type of games. Here is what I have listed:

Please pick which one you consider the best and please tell why you consider it the best. If you are split between two games then that is fine - just point out why you like both titles the same.

Blazing Star is my fave, mainly because of the graphics. Graphics are very important in a shooter for me. Its got a lot of nice backgrounds and keeps the pace fast.

I don't think any of the shooters on Neo are in my all-time favorite list though. I wish there were more.

All-time favorites:
Ikaruga, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Zero Gunner 2

I think Twinkle Star Sprites, due to its head to head competitive style of play.... it is one of the most fun games on the system to play with two players.

Pulstar, followed closely by Last Resort and Strikers 1945 Plus.

Pulstar & Viewpoint. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Strikers is up there, too.

blazing star. the pace is fast, the graphics are awesome, and the variety of ships is great. and who could resist yelling out, "bonus!"

Aerofighters 2 / Sonic Wings 2 is like my fav shooter in my collection amongst my collection which consists of Ghost Pilots, Andro Dunos, and Alpha Mission 2.

I think Strikers 1945 Plus is great.

So i guess my faves are AF2 and Strikers.

Those are my faves and the ones that I think are must owns. Can't really pic a fave as most are unique.

Aerofighters series all the way for me.

I just got Ghost Pilots last week and what a disppointment. Terrible game..

I would be a tight match between striker and blazing star.

Not everyones favorite but I really rate Andro Dunos! I am a big big Gradius series fan thou.
I have Blazing Star its ok but that 'bonus' and the jap text mistakes are annoying as fuck! but its a good shooter.
I plan on getting Pulstar next please tell me it doesn't have that 'bonus'

I agree with you there...that BONUS drives me nuts as well.

I have Pulstar, and it doesn't have that thank goodness. The only thing about Pulstar is when you die you go back to the restart point, which is even more frustrating.

Does any one here like Zed Blade?

Best to worst, that I have played:
my top 4:
Blazing Star b/c it plays like Pulstar/Thunderforce, and its so damn professional and 'open'
Pulstar for its difficulty and fantastic FX
Viewpoint for its music, excellent shooter engine, and uniqueness
Last Resort for its mood, music, and post-apocalyptic nature

My bottom 4:
AeroFighters 2; great bosses, worst music on NEO ever, short levels bad
Andro Dunos; boring gfx, insanely hard, not rewarding at all. Music is ok.
Alpha Mission 2; See Andro Dunos above, but omit the gfx as it sux
Ghost Pilots; bosses are ok, but the game is just so damn lame. I'm a SNK fan all the way but this game is very dated.

There is no 'bonus' or anything annoying like it.
Pulstar however is a must buy for any schmup fan with a NEO. IMO, there is nothing bad about Pulstar. Yes its the hardest Schmup out there but its worth it, and so very rewarding when you beat a boss to go to the next level. SOme of the best bosses ever in a schmup also. Its pure, unadulterated R-Type in every sense. The game is damn good. The only reason why I feel Blazing Star overranks it is because BS just has a bit more to offer, and its easier but challenging difficulty make it easier to just pick up and play. Pulstar is a college course in shooter mechanics. But I guarantee you, if you ever beat Pulstar, you can beat any shooter, as it will TOTALLY school you on how to master a schmup.

I own Blazing Star and it is one of my favorite neo games. I played the first couple levels of Strikers a couple of weeks ago and would have to say it is the best. It has more ships than Blazing Star and better special effects. I prefer vertical shooters. Blazing star has great buildup and I love the bosses but Strikers just seems like a game I would play longer and enjoy more.
Strikers is also about twice the price as Blazing Star if not more on mvs.

You should have made a poll out of this bud...I would have liked to see the results as I am thinking about buying pulstar very soon.

Pulstar is GREAT, but suffers from one MAJOR flaw that really bugs me...it STOPS the gameplay when you die. DRIVES ME NUTS!

I cannot put S45+ on this list because in compairson to any other "strikers" game by psikyo it is last on the list.

I have Strikers 1945 2 Import for my Playstation and it is almost the exact same game as Strikers 1945 Plus on the Neo Geo! I got Strikers 1945 back in late 1998, played it once, then put it back on my shelf and forgot about it. I then got a Phantom 1 and a Strikers 1945 Plus MVS kit and played it. The whole time I played Strikers 1945 Plus I wondered if I had played that game somewhere before. I know that the last guy and the ending are the same for Strikers 1945 2 and Plus but am not sure of the other differences. I think that if anyone wants to play Strikers 1945 Plus, they should just save their money and get Strikers 1945 2 for Playstation.

I am getting Prehistoric Isle 2 soon so I will see how much I like that game. It was the final shooter released on the Neo Geo. It is NGH #255 and Strikers 1945 Plus came out right before it and its NGH # is 254 if I am not mistaken. I played Prehistoric Isle 2 a little on my emulator and decided to pick it up. I only know of one small arcade that has one Neo Geo cabinet but it only has Metal Slug 4 so there is no way for me to check out games before I buy them besides the emulator. Anyway, the graphics on Prehistoric Isle 2 look pretty good and is on the same line as Blazing Star. I find it strange that the game is said to be 473 megs since it looks a lot better than Strikers 1945 Plus which is supposed to be 681 megs. I think that Blazing Star looks a little better than Prehistoric Isle 2 and it is 346 megs. Go figure, I will reach my verdict soon on this issue.
