Full screen on PAL Neo-Geo?

My friend is buying a European Neo-Geo AES, but he wants to know how well it runs first. He's a 60 hz freak and hates bad PAL conversions, but since I have a Japanese Neo-Geo I don't know what's up.

So, do European Neo-Geo games run in full screen mode on a European AES? If not, is there an easy solution/mod to this? And how do US and JP games run on the same console?

Also, I've heard that the Megadrive/Genesis RGB cable works for Neo-Geo as well, true?

Yes, a PAL AES will run in 50 hz with borders. There's a mod you can do to solve this.
Any AES will accept any game regardless of the region, but they will play with game settings according to the region the console (not the game) is from.
Yes, Megadrive RGB cables should work with an AES, but take care that the pins are a bit wider in the AES, so it may not fit well.

The info Amano gave is not 100% accurate and needs to be integrated with the following:

SNK made two different PAL consoles, one 50Hz and the other 60Hz, so getting a PAL machine doesn't necessarily means getting black bars/slowness. If the machine turns out to be the 50Hz model, you can always mod it to 60Hz in a very simple manner (search for old topics on this matter). As for the games, there are no incompatibility issues. US and Japanese games will run on any machine and will appear as US on a US machine and Japanese on a Japanese machine.

Both Neo Geo and Megadrive have a DIN 8 socket for Audio/Video out and while they're wired the same way, they're actually different types: the Neo has the 270° variant while the Megadrive has the 262° variant. See this chart:

And here's the two types side by side (MD left, NG right):

Megadrive socket:

As you can see, the two upper pins are closer to each other on the Neo (Amano was probably confused on this), meaning that to use a MD cable on a Neo you have to force it into the socket with the risk of bending the pins of both, something I strongly advise not to do.

Oh well, I just got owned once more.. :p

I didn't know there were two PAL AES models. About the RGB cable, I once tried to use my Neo cable in my Megadrive and it didn't fit well, I think I once managed to make it work (very good picture in the screen, but sometimes one of the 3 colors would disappear) but I just gave up (actually, I think the cover from the connector in the cable got stuck in some way.... :loco: ).
