Video Game Controversy

Gamesopt has a nice article on video game controversies.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6090892/index.html

The only thing I find funny is that Samurai Showdown isn't mentioned: I mean, the original MVS version was released around the time of the Mortal Kombat/Night Trap brouhaha, and SNK did edit out the blood in the AES release to avoid controversy (and ended up pissing off SamSho fans, leading to the creation of the BIOS hacks), so why isn't it mentioned?
Also, it's odd that Resident Evil is mentioned, but Silent Hill isn't- most critics agree that Silent Hill has the more disturbing images.

The usual suspects are mentioned- Grand Theft Auto, Soldier of Fortune, Wolfenstien (I'm playing Return To Castle Wolfenstien, and I love it!), Carmageddon, Doom, Manhunt, et. al...

So, do you like it? Discuss.

even I have to grudgingly concede that Ms. Lamm does raise some good points about the whole lack of supervision thing and that the many people were only in it for the money and didn't give a rat's ass about their young customers...

but for them to simply write off the entire industry and its products as something that must be so closely monitored, I say to hell with them...

...haven't read that article Linky yet, but does anyone remember that in the NEO:GEO game Burning Fight on stage one the Sex Shop Guy and on stage three the homeless guy, if you stand in front of them will drop to their knees and literally "Kneel & Bob" (i.e. suck yor dick bitch!) ??? *Someone told me that the characters are actually looking for change, but it just looks like the dudes are gay and wanting to suck yer dick right in the middle of a street fight. I'd say that right there is A MOMENT OF VIDEO GAME CONTROVERSY!

I think that quote which you are referring to is presented in a historical context- after all, it was made in 1982, before I was born, and as the article says, the quote was made ten years before Mortal Kombat.

Also, one more thing to throw out; Dead Or Alive was mentioned, but Mai Sharuni was ignored. Was that an oversight? :D

EDIT: Merc, if that's true, then you can vote on the "most controversial game" at the end, and you can write in a title if you wish. :)

I don't have NEO RAGE anymore so I can't take a screen grab, I'm sure someone in our community can post up a pic of this, but I shit you not man, these two dudes put the kneel & bob on you, and I ain't ever seen anyone riffle through a person's pockets for money on their knees with the head going up and down into a person's crotch before. It really is funny to see the first time, then it's even funnier to use your special move on them and kill them (actually they just blink and dissapear into thin air).

Hey, I believe you, man, you seem like an honest guy. :glee:

Anyways, getting back onto topic, Midway's take on psychological survival horror, The Suffering, is done and en route to retail as I type. Judging from impressions from Andy Eddy in his current Biz Buzz column, it's going to be gory. And a hell of a lot of fun.

Also, as some of you might know about, there is a law in Washington State that is being fought over in the courts that bans stores from selling minors games that have violence against police officers. I wonder about two of my favorite racing games, Midnight Club 2 and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. Those games have violence against police officers (in these cases, cop cars), but the games are rated T and E, respectively, and the law targets M- rated games. And for an example that is more relevant to you fellas, what about Metal Slug? The enemy soldiers are technically police officers, so what happens if the Xbox port of Metal Slug 3 is slapped with a T rating? Wouldn't be the law's Catch-22? :smirk:

Discuss.

Hm, here's something for all of you Canadians here:
http://www.1up.com/article2/0,2053,1544812,00.asp
I can talk about this all day. If you don't care about this issue, would you be content with playing kiddy platformers all day? It's more important than you think; the press demonizes video games as "murder simulators" (Dave Grossman's words, not mine), and dismisses any voices of reason (Lowenstien, Della Rocca, Jenkins, et. al.) as a bunch of paid apologists that care more about money than anything else. If nobody cares, then the Joe Bacas of the world can legislate video games into oblivion the way the moralists almost ruined the comic book industry back in the fifties.

::exhales::

Sorry about the rant. Perhaps if I continued this in the unrelated topics forum, then I can get more responses...

Metal Slug X had an ESRB of rating of T. (Teen rating.)

The enemy soldiers are reminescent of WW1/WW2 German soldiers acting under a manovelent dictator. So in this case they aren't respected authorities because of their terror status. (i.e. it's okay to shoot Germans in video games.)

Just something that tends to slide under constantly, and not made much of. Besides that, it's so funny to watch those dern soldiers explode like that with that large yell. ---No problems seen there.

!!

I completely forgot about Real Bout FF...Blue Mary graces us with a quick flash of TEH BOOBIES...the ratings mongers would've loved that...
I know I did... :D

Kazuki.

Why not just get a copy of KOF'99 for PSOne and mess with the custom character mode? Simply select Blue Mary and make her shirt the same color palette as her skin--Voila, a semi-clear look at what she's kept hidden.

Then you can relive that Real Bout Fatal Fury moment as much as you want, for as long as you want.

meh, too much work for something that's already in RBFF...honest...

1)get a copy of the game and play as Blue Mary on the dock stage
2)win the round by knocking your opponent "Out of Bounds", making sure Mary falls into the water also
3)when she surfaces, she quickly realizes her top is...well, elsewhere :spock:

I don't know why this was programmed into the game, other than I'd like to think the old SNK team had a hell of a sense of humor(like Cham Cham's pottymouth in SS2)...
:)

Yeah. It's a nice touch to RBFF to see that.

Truthfully though, Mary has never been my facination. There are just days when I wished that Kasumi or Chizuru suffered the old Art Of Fighting syndrome....*sigh*

well, there was that rare victory pose of Yuri's in Capcom vs SNK 2 that was just like the one from AOF 2 where she "accidentally" undoes her belt...

*ahem*
...and keeping on topic, what does anyone else have to say about these particular examples that have been brought up as far as the whole censorship/ratings issue?
:D

Funny, I thought EA killed that game (pun fully intended). I'm assuming you got the game off the 'Net, which I have to do eventually... :glee:

Wow, I have this outburst and I get a few more responses. Thx, fellas! :glee:

huh...

THey somehow missed Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Also the most contervresial and socialy destrutive game wasn't mentioned....

Everquest online.....

Also neo fans should note this:
Capcom filed suit against Data East Corporation (Data East ISA, Inc.) in 1994, alleging that Data East had knocked off Capcom's Street Fighter characters for its Fighter's History game. In the end, the court dismissed the case.

I seem to remember two Capcom cases regarding Street Fighter 2.

1) At the time when Capcom was using Hasbro's G.I.Joe to create Street Fighter action figures Mattel sued stating it had full rights to the name Ken. Thus, to diffrentieate the market, Capcom gave Ken the last name Masters. And so, Ken Masters was born. :eek_2:

2) The United States Air Force came against Capcom stating that in the origonal SF2, the Air Force scene was too similar to an actual air force (i.e. too realistic.) and should be changed. Which is why in later versions the flight crew's uniforms and jackets have a pallete switch. :eek_2:

Thats all I know of for that title. Nice little controversies, eh?

Edit Note: Edits made for readibility. Curse the evil typo/grammar demons!

I guess "Rated M for Mature" is too complicated for the Ontario Film Review Board to understand...

I remember those wacky Canadians doing the same thing to Soldier Of Fortune. Go fig.
At least they didn't ban the game outright, like New Zeland did... :eek_2:
