So i was talking to this guy in a local game store and they had a few Neo Geo arcade systems up. As i was playing Mark of the Wolves (shit i love this game and NEED to get it), i realized that i should check out the Phantom 1 and score some good Neo geo games for a lot cheaper then the AES carts. So my question is, is it worth the $200? Is it a pain in the ass to hook-up? Anyone who has one, id greatly appreciate your opinion. thanks

I'd build a supergun for about the same price to be honest.

On a technical level it's a hell of a lot simpler to use than a supergun, consolized MVS board, and a cab. If you don't have enough room for a cab they're good. If you already have a homesystem I'd look into a phantom-1 before a supergun or whatever. They're quite simple, just put the MVS cart in the phantom, put the phantom in your homesys and hit the power switch. I have a phantom-1 and a JPN homesystem. I'd prefer a cab over a phantom mind you, but I lack the space for one and also don't know jack shit about hooking one up (it seems difficult to me).

youre in the same boat that im in. Id love to get a cab, shit id kill for one. But where am i gonna put it? I have no room for one, so i think this is the best idea. And its really that simple? Is the quality any different? Also, pardon my dumbness, but whats a Supergun?

It really is that simple. Sometimes there is are distorted pixels during scaling effects (most noticable in the Samurai Shodown series) but I really don't mind them, plus that really depends on your system, at least that's what I've heard, some people don't have that scaling problem with their NGH+p1. I've also heard that they have problems with the new releases by Playmore, I can't really disprove that fully as I only have one new release (Rage of the Dragons) but it runs perfectly for me.

Not to sure what a supergun is my self... All I know is it takes a JAMMA PCB (an arcade board) and runs it through some converter thing that plays it on your standard TV.

the phantom-1 is plug n' play. there is no difference in quality. the only difference is that your MVS carts will boot up in AES mode, unless the cart never had an AES release. i bought mine when !arcade! first released it and i haven't had a problem thus far. i'd prefer a consolized 2-slot over the phantom-1 + AES combo, but not by much. plus, with the AES, you can play SvC: chaos if you ever decide to pick it up since it never received an MVS release. final note, metal slug 5 won't work with a phantom-1.

As far as I remember, even games with no AES official release have an AES mode, although it usually doesn't have any extra option.

This has been proven to be true from my experience. Puzzle de Pon has a home mode.

I heard VLiner won't run on a homesystem with a phantom. Anyone know if that's true or not?

Jerkey, just to let you know, the Phantom you have has been proven to not have scaling effects with a first generation US aes machine....

I think a phantom is really cool and Great if you plan on buying AES and MVS........

Yeah, I think it's my system. It's not too bad, it's only annoying on Gen-an's stage in SamSho1.

Still, the video output from a supergun (jrok) pwns the utter shit composite signal from a neo. That and for a decent signal, you don't have to cough up $2348907392 for an s-video mod if you're an tech illiterate.

No, it's fucking garbage. Save up and buy a consolized setup, or get a supergun + mvs board. The 200 is 200 that could be spent elsewhere.

Actually the s-video mod + labor + other stuff runs cheaply via Jeff Kurtz. Under 100, last I checked.

That was a slight jab at a Legend if you will...

Jrok = $86 shipped I believe

Either way, I am still of the mind that the supergun is better because of its flexibility. Not being limited to one format but also being able to play other jamma games.

That's because V-Liner requires additional hardware to run.

Shit! Is the Phantom-1 really that bad? I'm thinking about picking one up, but if I'm going to end up regretting it I'll just buy a game instead. To be honest, the only reason I'm considering a Phantom is because I can't find an AES Rage of the Dragons or MOTW.

fuck the phantom-1!

almost every day in the tech forum i see someone that has a problem with it. this game dont work, this game freezes up.

you have to wrestle with the carts to get them apart from it. which doesn't seem safe to me at all!

get a super gun! have someone make you one. or get a massystem if you like poor video quality. buy a 2 slot for your supergun system, and get some of the excellent massystem neo sticks to play them with.

make sure you get a 2 slot board that has controller ports, memory card reader, and headphone jacks.

While the Phantom seems like an excellent idea at first, it is actually just a shitty overpriced scam. Lets pay super high prices for cheap components that aren't even professionally packaged. Hooray!
