I love the Militaristic theme and the Militaristic music that keeps you feeling intense throughout the game.
I love the super-deformed, bubbly likenesses of real military vehicles scattered throughout the series.
I love the over the top, Hollywood-like reactions when dying. Like sometimes if you get shot you'll do a grab your shoulder and do a flying twist. Or the ultra-detailed disintegration of your Zombie form when hit with Zombie spit.
These games will kick your ass, and you'll love it

awesome thread, since i just managed to beat metal slug 3 with 3 continues. i was able to get all the way to the second half of the last level without dying, but the cyclops spider section and the zombie escape section were just too much.
as for what i love about metal slug, i just love the run 'n gun action combined with the charismatic presentation.
ps - 300wins, no more 20 credit runs! but then again, this was on AES mode.

Metal Slug series is also my favorite among the SNK's but I hate MS4 at the maximum now I'm used to it. It's sadly the only one I own and I don't play it anymore for weeks because it just sucks to hell. It's actually on sale on ebay...

MS is inspirational to me as an animator. Character animation above everything else. SF3-3S and GGx2 are up there, though.
Working on the MS series would be amazing.
Contra laid down the groundwork, but MS brought it home w/amazing art, sound & gameplay. My fav videogame series of all time. (Guardian Heroes is my fav single game)

I love the sheer insanity of some of the battles in the Slug games. Firing away with the machine gun, throwing greandes, madly dodging bullets, its all just so great. The secrets associated with getting a high score (especially in MS2) and the multiple paths introduced in MS3 are some of my other favorites in the MS series.

What I love most of the series is the humour and the funny scenes/items/actions which keep appearing and surprising in every chapter. Of course not forgetting about the outstanding animation, graphics and playability.
These games just kick ass.
