Most gaming mags nowadays seem to be nothing more than industry whores, spreading their legs for EA or Sony's diseased cocks with the quickest of speed. It doesn't matter how shitty the sex was, they scream anyways cuz they got paid.

But a few months ago i picked up a gamesTM at a local b&n and i really liked it. I enjoy the hint of dry humor, there are no lame attempts to make videogames seem “cool” (this is known as the Maxim disease), and they like many of the same games I do. The reason I bought the mag in the first place, though, is their big RETRO section in the back. The last two i got had big PC-E and Game Gear spreads, various interesting pics and features, and a funny layout. It beats Game Informer by a mile.

The bad: It’s a UK mag and since i am in the States the news and new features stuff is either obsolete or doesn’t exactly pertain to me. And it’s $8.95. Ouch.

It’s still worth it, IMO. The retro stuff is worth the price alone. Also, the internet has sorta made mags obsolete as news sources and i also like getting a different perspective on gaming. We in the US are spoiled compared to the UK, it seems…

Anyways, it probably has been mentioned before, but i'm here say it again: props to gamesTM!

Yeah, I live in the UK and collect that. In fact, they did do a feature on the Neo Geo in one issue.. I think #6. They also rate Metal Slug 3 (On import) as one of the Top 20 Must-Have Playstation 2 games, and they said "Old-school shooting has never been so much fun".

However, the Retro sections are the best. Over 20 pages on old games, including big features on classic consoles? Better than most magazines, that have it tucked away in a corner, and only ever cover one game. This month, the highlight of the magazine in total is the preview of Hyper Street Fighter II- They've even got Ryu on the cover!

It's definitely one of the best UK games magazines, along with Retro Gamer Magazine.

It is quite original, in terms of modern day content EDGE still wins out, though their sometime questionable bias and stiffled "proffessional" writing styles are not to everyones taste.

@ least GamesTM doesnt takew itself too seriously, it takes its major cues from when CVG was the greatest mag on earth, ACE & single format mags like Amstrad Action & Spectrum blah in terms of layout.

Only gripe i have is some stuff in earlier issues were hard to read, it was a bit messy in the retro sections, but looks like they sorted it out, great stuff, must buy:drool:

I agree with you completely. I love this magazine as well since I discovered it a few months ago. I am lucky that local Barnes & Noble carries this, I bought 3 issues so far, I love their retro section. Do you guys know if we can subscribe to it even tho we live in USA?

EDIT: Oh yah, GamesTM put old (classic) games advertisements too! I love seeing old ads like Moon Patrol, Gunsmoke, etc!

I recently spoke to their managing editor and there are currently negociations to bring GamesTM to the US with a localized version.

I wanted to do it myself but the investment is a little more than that of an AES cart (read way over my means) so someone else from Atlanta or NYC might get the rights (Ziff?).

In any case, as long as they keep the editorial content close to what it is in the UK edition I'll be happy. I hope the deal goes fine and they bring it sooner than later. I just wish I could have been the one doing it but unfortunately publishing is not a cheap adventure.

Insider trading note : hold on your Paragorn Publishing stocks ;)

Does GamesTM have any previews of current games?

Yeah, it's mostly a 'good current games' mag, but they do go in with a lot of retro stuff too.

Pretty good balance in my opinoin.
