First of all, everyone should know that this game is a BEAT EM” UP! My views of this game are from that of a beat em’ up enthusiast, and I will be rating this game based on what makes a brawler good in my mind. If you are hoping for this to be a deep and complex game, then you can stop reading. IT’S A BEAT EM” UP! Otherwise, enjoy!
Just like the great brawler logic used in games like Final Fight, so too does Demolish Fist take you on an adventure where beating up oil drums for food makes perfect sense! The story is thin and ambiguous, but then again, that’s not what really matters! What matters is a steady flow of interesting baddies with ridiculous names to plummel, over and over and over again. And in this respect, Demolish Fist delivers two-fold.
In Demolish Fist, you pick from 4 characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each character uses three buttons: Guard, Attack, and Jump. Different combinations yield different combo strings and results, as does holding the guard button while attacking. Like any good brawler, you can grab, knee and throw. What makes Demolish Fist’s game play soar, is the fact that you can throw, attack, guard and jump in eight directions. Enemies attack from all angles, and you can focus all your hits on just one baddie, or break them up among several, in any direction.
The game is viewed like that of Final Fight: you can walk up and down the screen, and the camera pans left to right, giving it a very 2D feel despite being able to attack in all 8 directions. It’s easy to tell where you are in relation to other characters, and the feeling of an old-school brawler is here in grand fashion.
Now onto the game play: Marvelous! Control is tight, with perfect hit detection and indication! Beating up the baddies is effortless. The more complex combo strings take a bit if timing, but are easy to master. Two taps of the stick makes you dash, and you can also follow up with a knock down attack. Plus like old-fashioned brawlers, you can just rack on the button to pull off a nice set of zingers on their 80’s looking ass! You also have your typical “push two button and use up some life to make everyone fall” move as well. And specking of combos, wait till you see Vertigo mode! Under your life bar is a meter that fills up with each hit you deliver. When the bar is full, simply press all three buttons, and get ready for a show! The screen goes dark, everyone slows down, as you speed up! All you need to do is some nice button mashing, and watch your character go nuts, finishing with a gallant pose and and the site of bodies flying everywhere. However, if you really want to take advantage of the Vertigo mode, you must know how to properly link powerful combos at the right speed, making it more than just a button mash fest. Simple? Yes. Fun? Defiantly!
Sound. Now this is important. You need good bone-crunching, fist against breaking-jaw FX that reward you every time you push the button. This game has it, not to mention the fact that bass really is nice, making you FEEL every punch! The Music is good. Not great, but it fits and functions with the action nicely. Each track accompanies the stage well, adds a nice ambience to the destruction at hand. The instrumentation from the PCM is wonderful! Crisp and clean!
Now, what good is a brawler without ridiculous bosses? You got it! Everything from a decked out truck to a Vampire-Dominatrix are covered here. Plus, they don’t fall easy! Not to mention the rest of game mind you: NOT a push-over. It’s not unusual to have ten or more folks on you at once. Yes, some are stupid (you need them after all), but many are not, and will take advantage of your open spots.
One thing that makes this game very cool, is the fact the background and foreground objects are very interactive. Never before have I played a Beat em’ up with this much stuff to pick up! There is a scene where you are in a crashed jet, and you can actually rip the seats from the floor and use them as weapons! Everything from tasers to bikes to TAXI CABS is here! I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to pick up a car, and take out a giant mob in one press of the button!
The graphics, while not the best in the world, are some of the finest in the world of brawlers. The polygons are near seamless, and the color schemes are vibrant and clean. The backgrounds look great as do the characters, although some can seem a bit blocky at times, but not by much.
So, in conclusion: this is a fantastic Beat Em’ Up! Great control, excellent game play, and perfect sound FX make for a great experience. Yep, it’s repetitive, it’s level-boss-level-boss, and that’s the way it should be! The action is non-stop, and most of all, it’s a pure joy to play! Sequel please!

- The characters can seem a bit slow when walking.
Game play: 10 (by Beat em’ up standards)

- Most people just can’t appreciate a good brawler!
Sound FX: 10
+ Perfect and powerful neck snapping, car exploding fun!
- Nothing Horribly original, but in the words of Ironhide: If ya got it, USE IT!”

+ Functions perfectly, and aids well in your quest to make the bodies fly!
- Nothing super catchy, but it gets the job done well!
Over all rating: 9.5
A quality game for the Atomiswave, and worth every penny I spent on it!
