Well, I've made up my mind. My mustang has to go. After getting stuck about 20 times this winter, no more rear wheel drive for me. So I'm going to start test driving some all wheel drive cars this summer, and right now, I'm leaning towards getting the STi over the lan evo, but what is everyone's thoughts on either? Or is there another car with AWD/FWD out there that would be better?

Me and criterion will vote for

VW Golf R32

if you want STi get 22B. if you want Evos get 6 or 7.

EDIT - if i'm not mistaken Imprezas can change the drivetrain to FF, like the cherokee can change to FR.

From a purely financial perspective the Evo's price droppes like a rock once you drive it off the lot. The STi holds its value a little bit better but either way you'll lose your ass in the end. I like both of them and the Lancer supposidly outperforms the STi but I think I would have give a thumbs down to mitsubishi.

Well, IMO, I'd go with the Mitsu just because of the lower price and the fact that it handles better than the Subaru WRX STi. However, both are very excellent cars and you cannot go wrong either way. :)

Impreza. If someone were to give me an Evo, I wouldn't turn it down, though.

Personally, I love these two cars mainly because of their performance. However, given a choice between these two cars I would easily choose the Lancer Evolution over the STi. One of the reasons why is the price, the Evo costs a bit less than the STi, especially the RS model which costs around $26,000. Not to mention I fell in love with it when I first saw Tommi Makinen drove the Evo 6 to victory in the WRC. However, if your going to use them in the snow, you better get some snow tires on them because the stock tires handle horribly on snow, although their handling on dry and wet is very good, but once you get some snow tires on them, not even God himself can move it.

Another recommendation I have is the Impreza 2.5 RS, its not as fast as an STi or Evo, but it gets the job done.

if we're talking current models, and i think we are cause we're in the US, go with the WRX no contest. The old Lancers blow away the Evo VII and VIII, not just in performance but looks, the Lancers are ugly as shit after VI.

I would choose the Evo over the STi:

Cheaper,
Much better warranty,
Handles better,
The shifter is smoother,
It includes a radio,
The seats are more comfortable,
You can get a sunroof from the factory,
Back seat has more room.

All the reviews I'm reading point to the fact that the lan evo handles better for rally racing type things, but as a daily driver, the sti is better suited.

The thing I'm finding out about the lan evo is that it can take mods much better than an sti can.

I test drove an STi with a friend of mine who works at a local Subaru dealer.

I kid you not, I almost wet my pants.

Get the Evo. My girlfriend just got a car, I told her about the Evo, she got one.. and she loves it.

They're badass cars man, you wouldn't be dissapointed.

She's coming back in town soon I'll post pics ASAP. :multi_co:

The evo doesn't look very good at all, and when you consider that the performance between the two cars is nearly the same (and to say one outperforms the other is purely opinion) you'd really just be left to go on looks alone. As for the sound system, only a chick would care about music while driving. The car lover would listen to the engine.

The reason why the STi is better suited as a daily driver is because of the suspension. The suspension in the STi is a bit soft compared to the Evo which has a stiff suspension. When you drive it, you'll notice that the STi has a bit more body roll than the Evo. Thats why in the Evo you'll feell every bump going up your spine unlike the STi, but the suspension can easily be fixed with aftermarket parts.

Edit: You probably already know that the scooby has a 2.5L engine. However, I feel they should of kept it at 2.0L like in the WRC.

Agreed 100%

I cant even hear the radio in my can when I get out on the highway--all I hear is VROOOOOOOOOM.

Oh, and my pick is STi:angry:

Well From what I've been reading tin the car mags it's a even playing field. but the Evo is faster in the curves (turning)...

but my pick is the STI..it weights a bit more but you can control the traction (from 50/50 split to 80% to the back wheels)...

Cars are one of the worst investments you can make. Subaru only makes AWD cars. Mitsubishi has a mixed bag.

Now tell me which car you want to buy?

For good resale value, experience in AWD, and reputation, Subaru is the only choice in the matter.

Also keep in mind that AWD cars consume more fuel, as the engine must now spin a 4-way diff to all the wheels, no just 2. Quiescent power draw goes up.

Opinion? The numbers don't lie. The Sti accelerates faster than the evo every time. (0-60 in 4.6 can't even be touched by the evo)

But anyways, I see it's kind of split down the middle here, but I had my mind pretty much made up on the wrx sti before I started this thread. Just wanted to see if anyone else knew something about the lan evo that I didn't that might make me change my mind. I'm still going to test drive both though.

And if I was into modding, I'd probably get the lan evo. Everything I've read points to the fact that it's way more mod freindly.

Evo walks on the STI in most of the side by side comparisons made by car mags. Both are great cars, it all comes down to what you like the looks and comfort of better. Atleast the Evo comes with a damn radio...

Personally I say Evo. Better yet, don't waste your cash on a 30k new car that will loose thousands of dollars as you drive it off the lot and go get a 15k sports car and upgrade the hell out of it. 95 300zx TT...
