Ugh.

I had way too much beer yesterday and last night... now I'm really hungover.

I was also drinking Okinawan Awamori (kinda like whiskey), and sake, so I've got a huge headache.

@Boriqua: I just read a biography of John Molson, the guy who started Molson's Breweries back in the 1700's. It was a really good read.

Not feeling so good the last few days, probably coming down with a cold, so I haven't been at the bar as much.

Just drinking Yuengling Lager this week. Stuff of the gods, and $1/pint. One of the many fine reasons to live in Philly. And I had a whole shitload of Asahi Super Dry a few nights ago. God, I hate that shit. Why is it that only the worst Japanese beers get exported?

Other than that, it's nothing but soju for me lately. A nice winter night with kimchi jjigae and soju = bliss.

Tell me about it. There's a small izakaya down the street from me, family run, nice people, great atmosphere, cheap and delicious food, but all they serve is Asahi.

Blech.

Soth Pacific Lager, draught and bottles
South Pacific Export Lager cans
South Pacific Ice Beer bottles

There is only one brewery here and imported beer is a bit exy.
OK for special occassions but its not drunk every day.
Thank goodness SP is a good drop :)

Guiness
Caledonian IPA
Miller (ugh, but happy hour prices you can't argue with)

Also, as my drinking this week was mainly in the areas of wine, whisky and champagne, could I suggest 'The Beer Thread' becomes 'The Booze Thread'?

In sad beer related news the brewery behind my flat is closing. Very disapointing.

I'm sorry to hear that...a travesty indeed.

And for the record the Beer Thread and Booze thread are interchangeable...if yer into the 'licker go ahead and share!

I second this motion heartily.

It seems like 90% of decent, but not fancy Japanese restaurants in the States carry nothing but Asahi Super Dry, my least favorite J-Beer by a long shot. Usually I stick with the shitty sake in these cases, but the sake was just too shitty this particular time.

Scapa single malt whisky, my new favourite

Cool, Highland Park is nice stuff, the Scapa is very similar.

Scapa is also an Orkney distillery, no?

Usually I like slightly less peat-y whiskys - Speyside distilleries, mostly.

I love the Edradour, although I've had a hell of a hard time finding it in the States.

Yeah, there are two, Scapa is the other. It's much smaller than Highland Park though, it's quite hard to find outside Orkney even, which is a little unblelieveable...

Speysides are nice. Some very nice stuff comes out of there. I like the Islay stuff most though, so much variety within such a small area. All distinct. Also, it's where I had my first whisky, Bowmore.

Miller Light + Several Shots of Goldslauger(Spelling) = drunk phone calls. I left my keys at the bar last nite and they actually had them the next morning. I hate being the drunk obnoxious guy, I have to go back to cool n' collected.

Islay stuff is really good. There are times when I love that extremely peaty taste that you get with say, Lagavulin. Bowmore is terrific - I've always loved their series of treated cask whiskies, especially the port and madeira cask ones.

Any more whiskey/scotch recommendations? I have been in a rut lately, and though i love my Johnny Walker Black, something new would be nice...if it's not $100 a bottle, that is!

My preferences also run towards something that doesn't taste like a Seamus Heaney poem (full of peat, that is!).

I had Chinese sake two nights ago. The stuff makes Japanese sake taste like water. It starts at 56% and goes up from there. I could only drink a couple shots (then I went back to my beer) The stuff made my whole body shake! like drinking vodlka straight.

Ive been drinking sapporo beer lately. Before it was all about kirin. Asahi really isnt so bad, I'll drink it if its the last option.

Always lots ot recommend, I suppose it depends a lot on what is locally available though. Generally, I'd always take a single malt over a blend, but there are exceptions.
