Anyone else like King's Quest and/or Quest for Glory?

I really miss the Graphic Adventure genre. Anyway, I haven't played much of either series (KQ 5&6 and QFG1VGA&4) but I can't say enough good things about these titles -- especially KQ6 and QFG4 (even with those annoying bugs).

QFG4 is probably the most atmospheric game I've ever seen. The graphics are still beautiful, the voice acting is superb (the 3 guys at the inn>any voice acting in any game, ever. Had me ROFL), and the humor is intact but not overbearing as it was in other titles like Monkey Island and Sam&Max. Also, even though I haven't played it for quite a while, I remember it being scary. Borgov Castle is probably the most frighening setting I've seen in a game. The fact that there's hardly ANYONE in such an enormous building makes it all the more startling when you actually find them (Tanya and Toby really creeped me out when I played this). The foreboding music helps a lot, too. I still remember exactly what it sounds like. Then there's that ghost in the hallway...what're you supposed to do when it's there? It just seems like a random thing thrown in there, but it's creepy nonetheless...

Are there any games similar to these two that you'd recommend? I know all about the LucasArts titles and the Broken Sword series. How's the Gabriel Knight saga? And has anyone ever played I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream? It was going on eBay new a few weeks ago, but I passed (the reviews were very mixed, and I'm usually not too much into darker games, although ED is one of my favorite games ever).

I can't say that I was a big King's Quest fan though I did enjoy number 5. I had the CD-Rom version and I played it many many times. I got a copy of 6 from my friend but I got stuck and couldn't finish it!

Then one day my dad brought home Quest for Glory 1 and I just LOVED it... it was a great game, not like anything I had played before. Unfortunately I never found a copy of part 2 but I was never a fan of the games were you had to type what you wanted to do. Part 3 came out and I was just as amazed as I was with part 1, and then when part 4 came out it was good... when it worked any way (too many darn bugs!) Unfortunately I never had a chance to play the CD version (I had the original on disc, which took SOOOO long to install :) ) It's too bad about QFG5, I didn't care too much for it. I beat it with the fighter I think and then never touched it again. One of the cool things about the series was that you could build up your character in between the games. QFG is one of the most unique series I've ever had the pleasure of playing through dozens of times.

I'm in the same boat. QFG4 was great, as was kings quest 5 and 6. There are some remakes somewhere of the older KQ games with graphics on par with the newer ones that are worth playing if you're a fan as well.

Quest for Glory 4 is the best game never to have been beta-tested. I played/crashed my whole way through and found out that it was unwinnable with mage due to a glitch at the end.

Damn right. Took the words right outta my mouth.

neojedi: I haven't followed through with this yet, but if you check the message board for QfG4 on GameFAQs, there's a guy that's created a patch that supposedly fixes every bug in the game.:buttrock:

Force: Are the remakes you're talking about created/released by Sierra, or are they fan creations? I'd be really interested in 'em. Where could I find them?

And to anyone: I can't get these games to work on my computer, and it's driving me nuts. It's a Compaq MV540 w/Windows '98 (was purchased/made in late '99). Whenever I try to install KQ6, for example, it tells me I need a 256 color drive. I've recently been entertaining thoughts about buying a new PC; are there any on the market that are new AND play these titles?

Thanks!

Quest for Glory 4 was the BEST adventure EVER! I played the SHIT out of that game and every once in a while I fire it up just to play it. I had the disk version and upgraded to the CD version... best thing I could have ever done. I LOVE the ad-libbing the guys do in Hotel Mordavia. "Lot's of stinky people." "Well, he's stinky at least." That shit STILL cracks me up.

And I actually have the entire series, even Hero's Quest (the name prior to MB speaking to Sierra about their copyright on the name). I'd rate the QfG series as this:

4
1
2
3
5

Five was a turd, IMO. Never should have been completed and was a great disappointment. It felt rushed and wasn't all that fun.

I liked KQ5 and 6, 7 was a turd, never played 8 and the first set were simply "OK."

I dont like them so much...
Talking about Sierra those i prefered were Gabriel Knight, Space Quest 5 and Freddy Pharkas. Honorable mention for the cruise Larry (don t remember... 7 ?).

I was a fan of Gabriel Knight 2 too but i agree the movies thing is special (people might think it s an interactive movie and not an adventure). I don t know about english voices, but the french dubbing was great (except gabriel, overacting).

Gabriel Knight was a DAMN DAMN DAMN fine game! One of the BEST I ever played, right after QfG4 that is.

And Freddie Pharkas was the shit. I actually picked up the CD version not too long ago as I only had the disk version (which still had some cool sounds in it, even though there weren't voices.) Do you remember "let me at them cattle... let me at those... SHEEP!" when the rustlers come to town? Comedy gold!

And in a different (not Sierra), yet similar vein, all I have to say is... FULL THROTTLE.

It's pretty funny that your computer is TOO NEW to play a game. I'm fairly computer illiterate, so i have no idea what to do, but i'm sure someone can help.

I think i only played Quest for Glory 1. Those Sierra releases were hard to keep up with. Let me think...this was the one with that old wierdo Erasmus, right? And Spielberg? Baba...O'Reilly (hmm, i know that's not right )? I need to take a refresher course...

...but I loved Monkey Island like no other. Sure the humor WAS a bit overbearing, but that was right up my alley at the time. "Look behind you, a three-headed monkey!" That shit still makes me smile!

edit- ya, Baba Yaga. THanks Sierch. That reminds me of another thing i love about these games: they were fun as hell, but they actually slipped in a little bit of LEARNING once in a while.

What the 256 color thing is telling you is that you need to:

Click Start
Go to Settings
Go to Control Panel
Double Click "Display"
Change the Color Depth in the Settings Tab to 256 instead of 16, 24 or 32 bit.

Problem solved.

And a new PC would be running XP, so you could actually run the DOS versions (superior IMO to the Windows versions, especially QfG4 with the moving cursors that you only get in the DOS mode) by running the BAT/EXE for the game in compatbility mode. If you get XP and need some help with it, let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.
