Best Single Player Fighter?

Due to a complete lack of competition and the fact that I don't have time, all my games are 1 player against the CPU.

Which fighter is the best to play against the CPU then?

Your thoughts are welcome!

[edit] As I'm not playing against another competitor "broken" games are not an issue (except for cheap bosses)

Samurai Shodown II & III (challenging AI)

SNK vs Capcom: Chaos (AI is cake, but the quirky pre-fight dialogue and secret bosses/endings makes for an entertaining 1p experience)

Waku Waku 7 or Matrimelee (goofball fighters at their best)

Oh yeah even if Matrimelee is my favorite fighter, it's way to easy because of the AI. You can make perfects on level 8 and easily finish the game in 1 credit. And I'm a very average player so the gamers would laugh to the difficulty.
Nevertheless, it's very enjoyable if you play on your own, that's what I'm doing for weeks:buttrock:

Garou MotW is very good to learn the mecanics of the 2D fighting because the CPU never tricks you, the way it fights shows you your lack of ability and that's quite good to see yourself's weak point in a fight.

Waku SUCKS in 1P, no more than one month longevity.
Fun at first, sure, but too limited to keep interested for long when played alone.

If you're just looking for depth, extras and combos any Kof should suit your needs, 2k1 in particular, as the whole Striker thing could take you months if not years to master (this doesn't imply 2k1 is better or worse than the other episodes...).

Other notable mentions: SS4, Kizuna, LB2, Ninja Masters.

If you dig something more cerebral and strategy oriented the above quoted SS 2-3 are your best bet.

Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Garou, LB1 or any Real Bout.

I am actually a really big fan of the early KoF's for 1 player action. The '94, '95, '96, '97 story line is just awesome to play through, and really gives motivation for the fights.

Maybe, but I find vs CPU MotW incredibly boring, and not only because of the diff level or something. 2P MotW can be awesome, but 1P sucks IMO.

Nice single fighters are KoF97 because of all the nice story bits and the tournament atmosphere, Last Blade 2 with all its different endings/story bits and the time attack mode), AoF3 because the difficulty curve is very smooth and the CPU can be quite clever (and you won't get a lot of good 2P competition anyway...) and Double Dragon because (IMO) it's soo relaxing to destroy your opponents with Abobo or to fool around with Billy's or Jimmy's cheesy specials. It's not a very technical fighter nor deep or something, but sometimes I need just that...

SS2, LB1

I'd say MOTW but as good as that is in 1 player, it really shines for 2player, tournament or otherwise.

SS2, Fatal Fury Special, King of Fighters 96 and 2002, and SVC Chaos all play reasonably well in single player mode.

Agreed, with SS2 being my favorite of the two. III is quite difficult, and can be frustrating at times. I always find the matches in Sam Sho to be challenging, yet fair. Well, except that the boss occasionally makes me want to throw my old-style stick through the fucking window :D.

You didn't specify a system, so I may I recommend Virtua fighter 4 evolution on ps2? Only costs $20, and offers the best single player experience of any fighter out there.

The Last Blade

because I love the atomsphere

Last Blade is almost boring alone because of the lack of difficulty. You can easily finish the game on level 7 one day after you started to play at it. Not enough challenging.

I didn't specify what system or what games I'm currently playing as I wanted to get a good consensus of views.

I've currently got ROTD, KOF98, AOF3 and LB1.

So far ROTD has had the most attention. I love the cheesy combos and I find the difficulty level perfect.

KOF98 I've only recently started getting into.

AOF3 I find the worst of the bunch. Love the graphics and the sound, just can't get to grips with the engine. I find it far too simplistic so I must be missing some of the finer points of the gameplay.

LB1 has a fantastic atmosphere and I'm just starting to learn Kaede's combos so it's really opening up for me now.

I've not been into the combos thing before so ROTD's dial-a-combo system was a great introduction. The fast pace of the game and the smooth flow created by the tag in system works great in single player.

KOF98 feels positively pedestrian in comparison :D

I'm looking for another good single player game to complement this bunch and I'm thinking possiblySS2, LB2, KOF99 or KOF03?

The idea of strikers or tag in appeals and I haven't played any other KOF's.

The stupid haircuts in SS2 make me think twice about it though....:mr_t:

I have to agree with Force and say that VF4evo is fantastic in single player but I'm specifically looking for neo fighters.

I'll agree to a certain extent. AOF2 is a fun fighter. It's much like a shooter in the sense that the opponents have strict patterns and it's fun to figure out what K.O.s them and what doesn't work.

Wow.

I've heard ppl saying all sorts of things about AoF3, but I never heard someone say it would be too simplistic, because it objectively isn't.

Samurai Shodown III and Ninja Master's have the best AIs on the neogeo.

I would say its either Matrimelee or any of the Last Blade games. Both are challenging but not too hard and that makes them fun to play.

Matrimelee, its the BGM's, you'll laugh at the lyrics!
