Has there ever been a game so destined to fail as PSO:Episode III CARD Rev?

I look at the screenshots of this game, and just know inside that the same twisted Gremlins that sat on the shoulders of the brass at Sega and said,"Hell yeah! Release as many Genesis hardware add-ons as you can!" are responsible for this piece of shit.

Phantasy Star Online had a pretty sizeable following. Makes all the sense in the world to completely fuck with the gameplay, right? Riiiiiiiiiiiight. Everyone will appreciate a Yu-Gi-Oh card battle rip-off instead of the fun Diablo-on-roids we enjoy today.

Not only that, let's release it on the console with the smallest possible online user base while were at it, despite the fact that a much better, more powerful console actually suited for this sort of thing exists.

Had to get that off my chest, I've been knee-deep in some serious PSO I&II on the Box, and seeing those pics of Episode III just makes me see red. What the fuck are they thinking?

PSO Ep I and II was one of the most addictive games ever made for any console. I started with the GC version first of course, being as it had quite a lead time on the Xbox release.

I did try the Xbox version, but I never made as many friends or leveled as high as I did on the Cube. When I saw Card Revolution, I was perplexed at first. Now I'm cynical. Give us a real PSO sequel with graphics and effects tailored for a new system. The Dreamcast based engine is showing its age, it's time for something new.

I'll be passing on this game.

Frankly, I think it looks neat. An X-Box release thougH? No point. The game wasn't as noticed on X-Box as GC, at least that's been my impression. Release it on the system where it did better, and I'm willing to keep my mind open on the battles for now.

Couldn't disagree with you more.
On the XBox, you'd have more than 500,000 potential players.
I don't know the numbers of how many PSO players remain on the Cube, but I'd be shocked if it was even close to a fifth that.
Even in the heyday of the DC, the subscription numbers ran near 120,000. That's when the game had NO Hunter's License fee (V1).
You also have to score a broadband adapter, AND a keyboard.
Text chat blows after getting used to using a headset w/voice.

Simple fact is, an Episode III that plays like I and II built from the ground up using XBox hardware to the fullest would have had players frothing at the mouth. :shame:

You may not like the game, you may say "That shit looks boring and ugly as fuck." Whatever, the point is just because you don't like the game doesn't mean it is destined to fail. Hell, I dispise Guilty Gear yet that game is doing so goddamn well. I know PSOIII won't get anywhere near GG popularity but still the game is far from failing.

P.S. That airplane game you like, Crimson Skies or whatever, sucks balls to me, so it is obviously destined to fail. *obvious sarcasm there*

EDIT: Deleted a useless paragraph about just me bitching why I like keyboard haha nm it

I dont know about destined to fail but it is very disapointing.

I would have rather had a full blown sequel as Loopz speaks of on the Cube and Box.

This would have been a great GBA game for PSO but no on the main consoles.

Oh well I have TFLO to look forward too.

I agree that it's not very appetizing to any of the older crowd including myself but destined to fail is too much. I forgot the exact number but people that are already playing on the JP version alone and it was in the high thousands. You know, people actually bought those god forsaken shit DBZ fighting games for the PSX.

actually I think the card battle is a great idea.
the play you have now is pretty boring.
I got bored of it what?
they haven't added anything new to it.
and don't try to argue that the gameplay is sound.
sure it is, but its boring and static. everyone has
the same melee combos. everyone gets spells basically
at higher levels so forces are tame unless you're incredibly topped out.
there's so many innovations SEGA should have been throwing
in all this time but they don't.
they may as well make it into a card game.
it's all about collecting the rare items anyways isn't it.
I'm sure it'll be great.

Well in a real PSO sequel maybe we could get better melee combos with varietys by class.

There is so much more they could have done. I feel it was rushed effort and to cash in on the card battling craze in Nihon.

I was just thinking this the other day. My god how I loved PSO when it first came out on DC, and I was into it really hot and heavy again on GCN. Hell, I imported it as I couldn't stand the wait. The new levels and enemies are so cool, and the good old stuff is there too. What a great game.

But this card game? I just don't know. I want to like it, because I love Phantasy Star and PSO, but I just don't think I can/will.

I will be all over a new PSO that is like ep 1 and 2, however. For that matter, when will PS5 come out? That would be sweet, too. As strange as it may sound, I actually like PSO better, however. ;)

eh. I'm still getting it.
it's supposed to have a comic kind of story telling to it.
and it's supposed to tie up the whole story of PSO and finish it up
since it is the final volume.
personally, I always thought PSO was a neat idea but was
always kind of pissed that they used phantasy star to launch
their online initiative. I would have rathered a complete rpg
altogether but PSO turned into something I liked.
Which I'm sure how PSO III will turn out for me.
or maybe it'll suck as much as the genny PS III.
who knows. but hey.
I'm just doing my best begging for scraps here at the SEGA table.

From what I've been reading on the PSO boards, it's that you either like it or ya don't...it doesn't seem to popular at the moment withthe importers...

In the xbox version I run into the same people and see the same people all the time. That 500,000 is for all the people on XBL
there is probly around 120,000 on XBL PSO but the cube was alot higher then that still. Up until the hacks started coming out and you were able to corrupt/fuck up people's account's and make your LVL shoot up to 200 instantly. Then the cube players like myself left and went to XBL.

Either way I have both versions and the XBL version is the only one that gets played at all. But you are right the KB and the adapter was another hundread dollars, that did not need to be thrown on at all.

Also the cube one must have a larger fanbase then the XBL version, cause if it didn't that game would of went straight to XBL 1st.

Oh well this game will come out on GC (maybe on XBL later) and sell like crazy due to the fact that there are alot of Fanboy's on the cube version. But who knows it maybe fun, Maybe it will be as fun as Card Fighter's Clash.:buttrock:

Only time will tell.

I don't know ... give it a chance.... I really think it will be decent.

But I also think Sega is out of Money Making Ideas.

I don't really care about this because I'm not into card games, but if that's your thing I guess you'd like it.

But after all the crap with the first 2 PSO's being hacked to hell means that this one would be the same. Watch you go to log on and your destroyed by somebody that gave himself every good power card in the game. That will kill the fun real quick.

Agree. I would rank PSO as one of my all time favorite games ever if it wasn't so damned hackable. Without hacks, PSO would have been in my top three.

Now, it's still up there for me, but I only really enjoy the game playing alone or with those that I know.... that I know don't hack/can't hack. WTF, hackers take the fun out of everything.

I started a solo game in this today for two reasons. One, I played Crystal Chronicles hoping it would be like PSO (man was I stupid), and two... because of all the talk about this card game. I still love PSO. What a great game!

I say now that the card idea is stupid, but watch me buy it anyhow. I'm Phantasy Star's bitch.

On the X-Box you have 50 other online games to play. We Cube players have...uh...PSO1&2. Furthermore, XB players as a group just don't seem interested in the PSO titles. In fact, outside ESPN, Sega in general hasn't been THAT big on X-Box. This has mostly been my impressions, I don't have any numbers or anything, but I can tell you it's a lot easier to get Cube owners t walk out with a handful of Sega titles than X-Box owners, who mostly want Halo 2, or some other faceless shooter.

I needed to reply to this topic, but I'm late for school so I hardly read any posts, but:

While still on PSO Eps 1 & 2 (Gamecube) the majority of people there said they'd be be there. Granted, these are the same people who said they'd be on Eps 1 & 2 after Dreamcast Versions 1 & 2.

I have no doubt the game will do what it's meant to- that is, gain a new perspective on what will and will not work the PSO series.

I doubt i'll even bother with this game, but as a PSO fan I'll give it a chance. My guess is there's a ton of people out there that'll follow the same philosophy I am.

due to the increased harddrive storage, mod chips, and programs that are able to be installed.... PSO on the Xbox is HORRIBLY hacked. Items that aren't even supposed to be in the game are..... and they don't update the quests that much :(
I have put some time into it.

PSO on the cube is pretty fun.

BTW... they are submitting a revision disc for PSO 1 and 2 for the cube that is supposed to take away a lot of hacks.

take it as you will.... but it really is supposed to eliminate tons of the hacks.

I, for one, am going to pick this game up when it hit the shelves in few weeks. I must admit, I was perplexed by the card them at first. But I am defintely up for it now.

I hope they remove AL (rappy) Mags & some other junk off online. It just sounds weird...
