Just reported on UK news (channel 4).
He has 'threatened' to alter the constitution to stop same sex marriages?

Is that true?
Thoughts if so?

I hope so.

It will be a lenghty process, but worth it...

How is exluding people from tax benefits worth it?

It's a legal institution. And I thought Bush was all about tax breaks to fix this shit economy.

LOL!
You're a bad man CTH!

But aside from the question of 'gay marriage' itself, doesn't it worry you that the constitution seems to have become more of a set of general guidelines than actual rules?

As an outsider, your constitution is something that I genuinely admire about US culture.
But my admiration for it was based on the fact that I really believed that it its basic tennants pertaining to issues of 'freedom' were truly unalterable.
GWB doesn't seem to share that view.
I can understand that any antique document may need to be re-interpreted slightly, every once in a while, but when I hear that this most sacred cornerstone of US culture can be diluted, or set aside in some cases, it devalues it, and the ideals it tried to uphold.

Bush has been ignoring the Constitution since September 11th and the PATRIOT Acts...but hopefully either in November we'll have a new President or we may have to resort to overthrowing the government :)

I can't believe so many close-minded faggots (pun completely unintended) support this asshole.

You don't drum up support for your re-election by waving the constitution like a goddamn weapon against a demographic of people who are potential voters. If I were a Republican, I'd be doubly outraged that this is how my party is represented.

I've been glad to see that actually a lot of Republicans have backed down from vocal support of Bush and quite a few are dissapointed with the president.

If you are behind this ban, then I hope you are a proponent of keeping marriages together, because our divorce rate in the U.S. is embarassingly high.

Oh one thing though, I do think that the mayor of I think its San Francisco should be arrested and Arnold needs to make a statement before he gets fucked popularity wise. That move was retarded and not the way to go about obtaining legal marriage for gays.

I think this is mostly just this year's attempt to keep the focus off the economy. Above any mishandling of the Middle East or lying about Saddam's connection to Bin Ladden or fictional biological weapons, this is one area Bush cannot afford voters to be too conscious of. If the war was going better, he could've just used that.

Incredible, they won't ban weapons because it is in the Constitution, but they will change it to stop the EVIL-same-sex-marriages? :help:

This entire issue is completely arbitrary. I really hope this doesn't go through. I mean, does he really need ANOTHER news to distract from his disgraceful job as president?

The amendment is just a distraction from WMD's (or lack thereof) and everyone here knows it.

Frankly, bush is disgracing our most sacred document by rewriting it in pencil...this amendment won't stand and the conservatives know it.

30 years ago interracial marriages were almost banned...think of someone trying to do that now.

Kerry will win this election, I have absolutely no doubt about it. If he is smart (and I think he is), he'll pick Clarke, Edwards, or Hillary as a running mate and he'll stay away from soft money accusations.

Hmm...

One gay man/woman loves another, and wants to marry him/her.

Marriage=Expression of love.

Now, let's see... We're guaranteed the freedom of expression in the first amendment...

Oh, well. Bush is a dumbass.

You know, I'm still confused by why this same-sex marriage business is such a big deal.

Can anyone give me a good NON-RELIGIOUS reason why same-sex marriages are bad? The only reasons I hear are always related to Christianity, and last I checked we did have something in this country called "separation of church and state."

If we legalize this, then why not polygamy? And then why can't brothers and sisters marry? Where do we draw the line?

Plus the fact that it's not healthy for the kids these people are raising (kids NEED a father and mother)...

Marriage provides benefits from the government, not to mention social status.
Marriage is a union between two people.
The church defines that marriage is between a man and a woman.
It's not fair to exclude same-sex couples.

Polygamy by religion should be legal. Polygamy by horniness should not.

There are so many things not normal. Are lesbians normal? Why don't we ban lesbian porn?

So what do we do about the 50% divorce rate?

lmao.

I'd be very interested in a debate about this with you. Just what sort of anthropological references do you have to make such a claim?

Any at all?

I believe it comes down to marriage being "The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife".

Man, and woman. Go have a civil union, but don't get married, cause technically, you can't.

I don't care if gays want to get married by the way, but that definition is what a marriage is considered.

PS Polygamy should be legal, as long as the man can support all his wives and children, and the wives are fine with it what's the problem. If a man takes on more wives and fathers more children then he can support then its neglect just like any other bum father.
