What are the best two out of the Samurai Shodown series not counting the Hyper 64 version? I have been curious to try it out again, and I don't own any of them. I never tried it on my AES, only in the arcade and on my 3DO. The 3DO version wasn't that bad, it had the zoom feature and played nicely. Of course that was the original.

I hear people saying the second installment in the series is best. Is it true? Are there any tips that might help me enjoy this game finally? I'd like to add two of them to my collection of carts eventually. I don't hate it, I just never did dig it as much as the Garou series, and my favorite SNK franchise, KOF. Okay that's about all I wanted to know, I should make this a poll, but I kind of wanted to hear some of your thoughts on the topic instead of comparing lines in a poll. But I know I will get more responses if it is a poll, because that way you don't have to type, you can just pick and I will probably pick the ones most voted for. So I guess I'll make it a poll. Please take time to vote if you see this.

All this Sam Sho 4 love from ng.com members .... how odd. Anyway, I loved part 4 as well, but I gotta give the nod to part 2.

samurai shodown as star wars

SamSHo 1 was like the OG Star Wars
there was nothing ever that cool ever before and nothing could
ever be better

SamSho2 was like Empire Strikes Back
OMFG! THey DID make it even better!! OMMFG!!!!

SamSHo3 was extremely tight better than Return of the Jedi actually was (Rimururu as the Ewoks)
ook so my analogy fell apart here, so sue me

Samsho 4 was Episode I- I don't think any Samsho character is as bad as Jarjar but maybe I just need to give it another chance

and I haven't played part 5 yet so I'll stop there (Attack of the clones as others have posted)

OH, and BTW Empire is the best of the series

and so is SamSHoDeuce!!!!

I pretty much love them all, though i havent played 4 much, and only played 5 a few times one evening.

So far, 2 gets the vote from me. Maybe a bit of nostalgia, but still a completely awesome game.

...NOTHING ELSE CAN COMPARE. Part III was iffy, Part IV won me back to the series, and I haven't played Samurai Spirits Zero so I can't comment on that. To me Shin Samurai Spirits was the Epoch of the series.

Im gonna have to go with Samurai Showdown 1. That is what got me into Neo Geo and loved it. Ive played 2 but havent had much time spent with the others and that one is great as well.

I thought I-IV were all pretty good although I haven't played 5 yet (for some reason saving for the AES version has become so tempting). But, if I had to rank them it would look something like this.

1. SS2: My reason for it is this. SS2 pretty much took some of the rough edges that SS1 had and polished them up. That and there is a certain kind of feel to it that is missing in 3 and 4.

2. SS1: This is on here because it is what helped sparked some of my interest in fighting games. SS1 was in for me one of the easist fighting games to get into. That and it also sparked my interest in 2D fighing games in general.

3. SSIII: Mabey because I have had a few beers tonight while studying calculus but, I find this game better than IV. While it is good musically and graphically there is something missing that I can't really place my finger on. That and the gameplay is a little less than stellar than II.

4. SSIV: Is it me or is the single player mode on this game WAY to easy. I have played it at the arcade a few times and have made it to Zankero (sp) on one token. Also it SSIV 2 player matches seemed to become more of a speed contest then a kind of chess game that was found in SS2. Overall I think more emphasis was placed on graphics than gameplay. Still something I would not mind having in my AES collection.

That's a difficult choice between SS2 and SS4 IMO...
Anyway, I voted for SS2, since both are just awesome games, but SS2 is much cheaper and really worth it's price.

Samurai Spirits IV gets my vote, I've just have had the must fun with it. Sorry Samurai Spirits II, you are still close to my heart, though.

It's like asking 'which finger do you like best?'

They're all awesome. Each game has it's own unique character.

Hmmm, let's see...
Samurai Spirits 1 was the first game I've played in the series, however, it wasn't the Neo Geo version, but the Genesis/Megadrive port, so I don't know if this really counts.
(Especially with Earthquake missing from that port.)

Shortly after, I played Samurai Spirits II on Neo Geo MVS arcade, and I've been hooked ever since. (I've spend a lot of tokens on this one.)

SS III & IV are good games in their own right, but for some reason, they didn't fascinate me as SSII.
So my vote goes to The Second Act.

really, really, really hard choice

samsho is one of my fave series ever
and for one reason or another I've never been too much into kof....maybe cuz you GOTTA play it on vs mode

samsho on the othr hand is the only fighter game to date I enjoy play it even in single mode

I'd say 3 is overall the best
but I voted 2 cause is what I've played the most, and makes me feeling nostalgic

Gotta' give love to the version I actually own and play. Samurai Shodown 2.
Even though it's the PC port done by interplay. It does have CD sound and appears to keep the Neo's save features. There is some loading pause, but nothing too noticeable.
My one beef with it is that when you tell it to play full screen, the windows taskbar gets in the way.
I'm just glad I got it in a dual pack with Fatal Fury 3. :D Even though they're both just "inferior ports." :tickled:
