when I first saw the first art for this new anime, I thought it was gonna suck, the art style was so different from the original. but after seeing recent shots from the show, it looks damn good, shin still has the hair, and micky looks cool too, the planes look insane. has anyone seen this? does it have the same voice actors? is it a whole 26 episode etc. series, or is this just a short OVA? What is it about?

I've seen some HK vcds pop up on ebay for the first 2 eps, but i'm waiting to see if the HK dvds pop up.

Thanks

It's a TV series. Not sure how many episodes it's gonna be.

Different voice actors.

I believe 4 episodes have aired in Japan.

I'm a big fan of the manga.

I haven't heard anything at all about this new series, but I'll keep my eyes open, and if I find out anything, I'll let you know.

I've seen the first 2 eps so far. I thought the CG animation for the planes in ep 2 was much better than in ep 1 (takeoffs and landings in the first ep looked simply awful, IMO). I realize that, being a TV series, it's not going to have the same budget for CG aircraft that you'd find in Macross Zero or Sentou Yousei Yukikaze, but some of the stuff in ep 1 was just... eeyew. Much improved in ep 2.

As 300wins stated, a new cast of voice actors. Not really surprising, given that the original 3 films were made in 1985-86. Some really good actors on this new series, tho: Kazama Shin = Koyasu Takehito (Kenshiro [New Fist of the North Star], Yabuki Shingo [KOF series], Hotohori [Fushigi Yuugi]), Shinjou Makoto = Miki Shin'ichirou, Mickey Simon = Seki Tomokazu, McCoy = Ootsuka Akio, Kanzaki = Midorikawa Hikaru.

The new series is a 12-episode TV series, 30 mins per ep. It's going to be released on R-2 DVD in Japan starting 4/28, with 2 eps per disc (6 vols. total). Rental VHS/DVD will have a slightly accelerated schedule, with vols. 1 & 2 coming out on 4/28. First pressings of the sale DVD will include a trading card featuring the DVDs front cover artwork. Bonus features will include: Opening & Ending animation for each chapter, episode preview collection, etc. Here's Avex Mode's official site.

If you really want to support the series -- and you don't want to support organized crime in Hong Kong -- I'd urge you to steer clear of the VCDs and HK DVDs. Either pick it up on R-2 DVD or wait for the inevitable R-1 license. In the meantime, there's at least one fanclub doing fansubs of the series, and the translation's pretty good from what I've seen so far.

Hopefully, the series will garner enough popularity/support (both in viewers, and in R-2 DVD sales) to warrant more episodes. I'm assuming that the first 12 eps will only take us thru the first (or maybe second) major story arc of the manga. It'd be nice to see the series renewed for a good long run that'd cover more of the manga, especially if it takes us beyond the territory already covered by the 1985-86 films.

This could be argued to a point, though I have yet to see the new AREA 88 anime, the bar has been raised on TV-Series using animation with C.G. *If it doesn't look as "Smooth" as Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex does... often making the movie look like a POS, then that's not excusable on behalf of the animators but rather them just being lazy to sell a product off it's name. Kind of reminds me of what happened to the whole Bubblegum Crisis 2040 thing. *2040's character's were a lot "darker" and more edgy, and the music a lot more gritty, but the animation quality just had that Post-Evangelion "rushed" bi-shojo look to it, and I still prefer the original late 80's-early 90's BGC.

I hear you on this, but are we to assume that AREA 88 is ever going to get the push it deserves? John over at CPM/U.S. Manga Corps is a really cool guy, but the company is just now about to (after sub licensing VOTOMS to Nu Tec Digtial for DVD) re-release Armored Trooper VOTOMS on a "Perfect DVD" set, and they've had that license since '96, and we still haven't seen the other OAVs of:

Roots of Ambition
Unknown Red Shoulder
Battle of Heterogeneous Species
The Heretic Saint / Shinning Heresey

...within the VOTOMS world. *Now CPM/USMC has had the rights to AREA 88 forever and only released ONE legit DVD of it, which was the first episode and never bothered to release the other two on DVD. Why I'll never know. *But I think it has more to do with the fact that other than Shin Kazama originally himself being somewhat Bi-Shojo, the demographics buying Japanimation/Anime overall are a lot more fickle and low brow than most people care to admit. Today Anime isn't something you have to fight to watch, you don't spend literally months tracking down some enigmatic NERD who's got that 4th Generation copy of something or another, or seeking Anime Fan Group Meetings. Now it's as simple as downloading off of BIT TORRENT or going to SunCoast or BEST BUY. *Thus unless Shin AREA 88 is blowin' up the screen (hopefully sticking to the Manga if it's that long), then I doubt seriously either CPM/USMC or anyone else will pick it up for release over here. We're still wating on MACROSS ZERO and many many other titles. *Maybe the Bi-shojo movement will get the anime released here there though, since things are more and more femminized today and people like that shit. *Personally I still want my anime thought provoking and with characters (save Shin) that are raw and gritty.

Maybe it's just me... But personally, I would have preferred it to be straight cell animation. I didn't like the CG for the planes all that much myself. But I have only seen 2 episodes. Hopefully the CG doesn't look so out of place ala Shin Hokuto No Ken.

I forgot to mention about Koyasu Takehito, since I know you seem to like him quite a bit as a seiyuu.

Being an Area 88 whore (own the LD, R2 DVD, arcade PCB, SNES game), I will have to pick this up. But I will probably wait until it's all done, just in case they make a box set or something. Unless the first volume (or any of the volumes) comes with a box. If so, please do let me know.

If they'd been able to hit the CG quality mark set by Macross Zero and Yukikaze, I'd've already pre-ordered this series myself. As it is, I'm going to have to wait to see if the series' depiction of the storyline is good enough to get me to pick up the R2 DVDs -- I just didn't care for ep1's CG at all. I agree with you re: 2-D -- the jet animation in the original anime trilogy impressed me alot more than the stuff in tv ep1.

I didn't have too much of a problem with the CG in ep1 of Shin Hokuto no Ken (it didn't blow me away or anything, but it didn't bother me, either), but there was a noticeable dip in the quality of the CG work in ep2. Haven't had a chance to watch ep3 yet -- hopefully they picked up the slack for the concluding chapter.

So far, only the details (and date) of R2 DVD vol. 1 have been announced. I'll be keeping an eye out for additional details as they're announced, and I'll try to remember to advise you of what I hear. Hopefully, one of the vols will come with a box (and a plastic "figurine" of Shin's jet wouldn't be an unwelcome pack-in bonus, either:D ).
