I love them all..even played Silent Hill Play Novel..couldn't understand what was going on..but damn it was good
My vote goes to SH1...loved it...Harry Mason was badass, and the game was just so dark..until SH3 arrived...SH2 is wonderful...

I'd have to go with the original. Everything in the game feels incredibly well balanced, between the story, gameplay, graphics (for its time), etc. It basically feels very close to what I consider a "perfect" game, i.e. one that I really don't have any problems with whatsoever. I literally played through the game 12 times I got so addicted to it. :o
Don't get me wrong, I loved 2 and 3 as well, but I think the first one will always be not only my favorite of the series, but one of my 5 favorite games ever created.

This is really difficult. It's hard not to say SH1, because in many ways -- pacing and atmosphere among them -- it's by far the best. Playing through the first time, there were so many moments where I was like Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China when he sees the flying eye monster: "My God, nooo...please, what is that -- don't tell me..." I just like the story of SH2 a little bit more.
It's weird; I was very paranoid about SH2 before it came out. I didn't see how they could continue after the end of SH1 (depending on your interpretation of what that ending means), but the game wiped away all of my doubts, even if it wasn't aesthetically quite what the first was. So much so, that I was expecting 3 to be even better. I had a lot of fun with SH3, and I've played it through 5 times so far, but it is by far my least favorite.

I'm gonna have to go with SH1 as well.
Why : Next Fear Mode.
I liked SH 2 and 3, but for me they couldn't top the original.
SH1 just get's better every time you replay the game.

You must be psychic, Verb, cuz I just started playing this series for the first time with # 2. Very nice game with great atmosphere. I like the static on the radio and ambient music, not to mention the 2D control option. FInally I can play a survival horror game without those damn RC-style Resident Evil controls!

Silent Hill 2-
The controlls were harder to get used to, and using the weapons such as the stick and knife were not as easy to accomplish beatings with. But the story line provided such a powerful emotional connection that it made it worth while. I liked how it had 5 different endings, and the slightest difference in how you played the game got you to them.
Greatest silent hill, IMO.

my 2 cents
LOVED SH1....because it was my first, and that camera angle in the beginning when Harry goes down that alley and passes the wheelchair...just awesome! And the phone ringing in the classroom made me pee!
BUT!!! I gotta go with SH2, just more sophisticated than the others. More memorable to me, a perfection of what was tried in SH1...way better character design than 3 [which is my least fave of the series...good spots...but bleh comparatively speaking] I loved the loneliness of SH2...which some people hated. Also, the story in 1 and 3 was less REAL to me...2 seemed realistically dark.
