Am I the only one that dislikes Samurai Shodown?

I've been playing SamSho 1 and 2 tonight.... and have come to the realization that I'm really not liking the series. At all. I've still yet to play my SamSho 3 but I'm trying to see the big enjoyment people get out of it. I had more fun tonight with Art of Fighting 2.

I'm more surprised that you had fun with AoF2 at all moreso than the fact that you don't like Sam Sho.

I can respect your righteous indignation/opinion about not liking Samurai Spirits, hey... we all like or don't like something. But I think it's safe to say you'll be in the minority on this one. Samuari Spirits is one of the best VS. FIGHTING game series ever to grace the arcade and the home in it's many versions... clearly you haven't spent enough time with Samurai Spirits II to truly see how great that game is. But then you have some ppl who prefer Last Blade 1 or 2 over Samurai... so whatever. Personally I think #2 is the epoch of the series.

Thats very odd. I hate AOF2 with a freaking passion but I love the SamSho series. Every game in the series is a work of art.

SamSho is great because the fights are dramatic... Though, i think i like it because i played the games when they were just released, that means the nostalgia factor is big.

I don t think i would play Mappy, galaga or gradius if i didn t know the games from when i was a kid.

SS was the game that lured me in as well. I loathe 5 though.

Yeah, see I wasn't expecting anyone to agree with me here :)

However I am hoping to see just what the hell I'm missing. Now, I do enjoy Last Blade just for background reference here...

My main issue with the series is the apparently complete lack of any kind of combo-linking system in 1 and 2. I try to link any moves together and nothing happens short of a couple light slashes connecting together. I was having a hell of a time on easy with Nakoruru to beat the first character. I basically had to cheese via bird hop to fire dive the whole time (pardon my not knowing the move names).

So... what am I missing? 99% of this site loves this game so I HAVE to be missing something here. At least in AoF 2, I can get a 5 hit combo going with some people.

nah i feel the same, never really 'clicked' with any of the SamSho games at all, the ambience instead of music and the slow paced nature of the fighting rubs me the wrong way. however, i do love Art Of Fighting 2 and have completed it on many different occasions.

I started to hate the game until I learned how to play, I was ready to sell it out of disgust (couldn't beat the first guy without at least 10 credits :p). But now I've gotten a bit better, I can win 4 rounds usually, and I enjoy it a lot more. The music really helps make the pacing seem important, to slow things down. I admit I really like to jump in and start kicking ass, but in SS, that gets my ass handed to me.

For some people, Sam Sho is a bit of an aquired taste. I know that was the case for me and Sam Sho III, at least (I loved the first two from day one). Keep playing, and I'm sure you'll grow to love them - there's just too much great stuff there :).

whats the point one player? its about challenging!!! :D

awesome poking game. traps and set ups. the slower speed makes it a real mind game requiring chess like forethought.

ss0 vs matches are amongst the most intense. its really fun.

ah, we may have a winner as to why I don't like it...

I have no competition, for example, I work at a Gamestop here in New England, not really near Boston, and maybe one person has heard of King of Fighters or SNK.

Maybe five have heard of Street Fighter II. Re read that for emphasis.

Ergo, I have little to no competition, or even anyone who wants to play with me. I'm forced to go single player.

if SamSho is meant to be a great 2-player game, then I'll keep them if only because maybe someday someone will want to play me.

It's not that I prefer LB 1 and 2, but I felt the series didn't go where it should've after part 2.

whatever I love both series, but the LB series is still my favorite.

yeah ss is going to give you the least fun combo wise. it has some though they are much harder to find/do than kof or the like usually. pretty much every other series (ff/rb/lb/kof/wh/etc) has more combos and more traditional style combos (j.attack->s.attack->special) than ss.... might indeed be your problem :)

when Samurai Showdown came out it almost had a cult liking towards it- it was a type fighting game that took some time to get a liking for- IMHO. Other than the fighting game fanatics, most of the guys whom I saw playing it at the time were ones who didnt even like Fighting games like SF2, AOF2 or FF2-

but the fact that a new game where you can hack and slash your opponent with slashing swords and weapons drawing all sords of "Blood and fatalities"- struck a nerve with them and really increased the game's popularity...........:spock:

SSIV and LB2 are my favorite fighters. SSII is o.k., but its really freakin hard.

Samurai Showdown was the game that got me to notice SNK. It's a great series no doubt. Anyone who perfers AoF over SS really moggles the mind.

In my honest opinion, i think Samurai Shodown 2 is a wretched piece of horrible controls mixed with shitty gameplay and retarded characters, all put together to make a over-hyped piece of crap.

if i didnt get it for free w/ my system, i would have sold it 5 minutes after buying it.

i still cant comprehend how it goes on all the " Top 100 games of all time" lists, when masterpieces like Last Blade, Fatal Fury special, AoF3, and KoF 98 do not.

Damn man there are games that I don't enjoy that are considered great, but I can still recognize why people like them, they just aren't my style. You just came down harsh...
